I think the "smiling Spock" is a nice tie-in to the original Star Trek pilot where we first ran into Pike and Number One. That version of Spock was much more emotional and smiled. Kind of jarring when compared to the Spock we see in the original series. It's nice to see SNW "explaining" the difference as Spock "experimenting with emotions".

Both Jack and Tawny slip from their "telephone voices" (almost everyone has one) we know as their characters to something much more subdued and casual on a lot of occasions. The funny thing is that the mannerisms are what they both had to learn, since their animated versions aren't motion-capture. But, that's why it was more in their thoughts.

@@Patricia599 Spock's a lot like Worf: trying *way too hard* to be the ultimate version of the ideal for his species, because he feels like he's not 100% really, truly, legitimately a member of his species/culture and everyone can see it. In Worf's case, it's because he was adopted and raised by a human family, and of course in Spock's case it's because he's half-human. If anything, Spock is probably in *less* danger if he lets his feelings out a little, because presumably they're somewhere between human and Vulcan intensity instead of full-on Vulcan. Vulcans who *don't* suppress their emotions are hornier than Deltans, angrier than Klingons, greedier than Ferengi, and generally terrifying. They had psychic weapons that were fueled by rage and killed by turning their opponents' anger into the fuel for the telepathic assault that killed them, and that's just the one that resurfaced in the Next Generation era -- presumably there's other nightmare fuel weapons and practices buried in Vulcan's past, too. Romulans get around the problem with a strictly regimented society, laws for every aspect of behavior, and severe penalties for stepping out of line. Modern Vulcans do strict logic and mental conditioning. Spock sent back thousands of years and adapted to being that far back by Mr. Atoz in the TOS episode in "All Our Yesterdays" just about murdered Dr. McCoy for looking at Spock's woman funny (according to Spock). But if he'd been full-blooded Vulcan, it seems unlikely that "just about" would be part of the description.

In the overall Animation industry, it has been a loose but consistent tradition to animate, if only broadly, as close in relation to their Voicers as possible. This has two important factors... - a.) It respects the Voice Actor, giving them a measure of imprinted immortality. - b.) It helps invest the Voice Actor to their role. This tradition of trying to animate close to their Voicers is far from absolute (again, some characters are simply too non-human to do such with), but if you go back through the literal decades/generations of animation, you will see *_many_* parallels between animation subjects and their Voicers; yet again, if only broadly (such as facial contours).

Boimler is right here. In the 23rd century, apart from a few adventures with V'ger, Whale Probe and the explosion of Praxis they had a wonderful period of quiet space exploration. No one heard of Q, the Borg or Dominion. The only problem they had was to drive away some Klingon or Romulan ship that got lost in Federation space.

I understand fans of Lower Decks were pleased as punch with this crossover episode, but as I am not a fan of the cartoon, for me it is the nadir of the Strange New Worlds series.

1:04 I often imagine meeting the crew of the Enterprise under Pike from Strange New World and going back to the 23rd century with them. And OMG if Chapel and Ortegas were to approach me like they're doing with Boimler and sitting down next to me, I would be so shy and stuttering because I actually have a little crush on Chapel. 🤭

Personally, I would have loved for Boimler to drip details on other members of the crew, beyond the ones that appeared in TOS. I craved to ear Boimler let out something like "La'An Noonien Singh? The poet?” or "Erica Ortegas, still holder of the record for the Kassel run". The writers should have had more fortitude and challenged the fans obsessions for continuity... After all, this is NOT the original timeline any more. The Eugenic wars happened in the 2030s, now.
@colemacgrath2005

It’s still the original timeline, according to CBS
@woongah
Жыл бұрын
@@colemacgrath2005 - The Eugenics wars happen thirty to forty years later, now. If that doesn't change the timeline, then La'an Noonien Singh can publish a somewhat obscure book of poetry in her old age, of whom Boimler is a fan, without it being a contradiction to current lore (and God knows La'An would love to know it). Nurse chapel can go on to teach Archeo-Medicine at the Starfleet Academy and become a terror for students, whispered about decades after she retired. And Pelia would probably still be around, too... I still count Boimler restricting his fawning only to the TOS characters (and Ortegas) as a bit of a missed opportunity.
