After seeing season 4, I love how Bojacks dad comments on his writing, and his mother wasnt willing to give him actual ice cream. Intentional or not, it's pretty clever.
@IllinoisTrafficAttorney
6 жыл бұрын
It's probably intentional. Note that he is having his parents do things out of character. Beatrice would NEVER offer him ice cream. Even though he is a boy, I imagine her bitterness combined with her upbringing would make that an out of character moment. This is reinforced by the fact that Bojack appears to be fantasizing about what kind of ice cream he would want settling on a dreamsicle which could be a nod to the fact that his mother giving him ice cream could be what he always dreamed of. After all, in his remembering of that scene, he dedicated an inordinate amount of time and energy to the thought of what kind of ice cream it would be. The last little clue is during Time's Arrow when Beatrice gives Bojack her father's painting. She asks for a drink and Bojack's fridge has nothing but lemons, sugar, and the bottle of wine. This is indicative of the fact that this prohibition against ice cream and the symbol surrounding the love giving it represents lasted well into adulthood which would give Bojack's dream of ice cream context because his mother probably denied him that joy. The comment about the writing is probably even more intentional since his failed novel was known far in advance of this Time's Arrow and was one of the major points we knew about Butterscotch early on. That he was a mean father and a failed writer were all the details we knew up until Time's Arrow.

It's even the same kind of ice cream Beatrice tries to eat when she goes to the dance with her mother. Butterscotch was always stated to be a failed writer, so they probably worked around the details after the fact. Pretty solid continuity

Sarah Lynn was canonically in this universe for her entire life. She had been acting since she was a toddler and Bojack has known her since then. Mabel is a completely different character from a different universe, and has definitely never acted or met Bojack. It's kinda fucked up that ya'll would do that with Sarah Lynn's incredibly sad story which was meant as a critique of child acting and to shine a light on the blatant abuse many children in the industry face. And why shove it on Mabel of all characters? It's like the catoon porn people make of her. It feels realllllllly gross and violating even though she's fictional because her world and character are so innocent and far removed from these kind of harsh realities. I mean, I like Sarah Lynn and I like Mabel. Why would you WANT either of them to overdose and die after an unfulfilled life of abuse and neglect 😔 It's just not the life they deserve.

Even though this is season 1, there's still so much to unpack even from a 20 second clip. In Bojack's story only his mom speaks as he was far closer with his mom irl, his dad far less impactful, so her approval meant more. The cigarette packet in the fruit bowl somewhat furthers the great impact Beatrice, a heavy smoker, had on Bojack. The ice cream is a nice nod to Beatrice's later connections to ice cream seen in season 4. I'd also like to point out that in the flashback young Bojack remains miserable longer than his parents (who are both seen as smiling instantly), even when his dad puts a hand on Bojack's shoulder, only smiling once he's been praised by Beatrice. This ties very nicely (spoiler) to Free Churro, as he desperately craved to be seen by Beatrice all his life, and in this imaginary flashback it appears that this finally happened, so he could be now be content.
