After he kissed her in episode 8 season 1 I knew they weren't gonna be together. PC even told him, "you're not really in love with Diane, you just think you are because you pay her to talk about your feelings." I was like, "ohhhhh, damn."

They're a fascinating pair. You know they're so similar and so built for each other they could never work out as a couple. The show never makes you feel like them actually committing to a relationship would be good for them and it's amazing seeing a show built around this fundamental relationship between a man and a woman who see each other more than anyone else in their lives. It's a real connection, it's strong, and they both know it. They're temporary. They changed each other forever but they're temporary

Honestly, first time watching this show I was convinced that these two probably wouldn't get together but at least would bone once. When I got to the bit where he comes home to find Diane back from Cordovia asking for a place to stay, my immediate assumption was that they would end up cheating on their respective partners with each other. Thankfully they didn't do that. Part of me would've liked to have seen them end up together as they do understand each other more intimately than anyone else and there is certainly a deep love there... but that love clearly was platonic (especially on Diane's part) and deep down you know they'd both find a way to screw it up.

I like that the silence in the end where they just sit on the roof is not awkward at all. many people (and shows for that matter) are scared of this kind of moments, but its just two people just being in each others company and there isnt any need to break that silence.

It was the last time they ever interacted. The show ended with their freidnship gone.

It’s super fitting that Bojack and Diane are set up as a ship in a typical sitcom fashion, but they never get together, because it isn’t a sitcom, despite Bojack’s wishes that everything is a 22 segment where things go well by the end

The fix him trope. A fiction that realises that doesn't work and is often abusive in real life.

And Paige Sinclair was the perfect reflection of this anti-trope from the perspective of someone who’s happily engaged. Paige, if I remember her name correctly, is this journalist on the hunt for Bojack’s story and all along her travels with her journalist colleague she keeps updating her beloved fiancé Baxter. It teases us because her updates come with another delay to the wedding as she unravels the story more and more but the payoff is that she was true to her word throughout! Yes she developed some feelings for the colleague whose name I have obviously forgotten altogether but she doesn’t throw away a whole relationship over one exciting road trip. She was an unexpected delight and one of my favourite minor characters

Well, I'm glad those two never dated. Diane would have wound up like Princess Caroline. They definitely didn't need to get together so, I'm glad they never dated

They remind me so much of a friendship I used to have. We shouldn't be in each others lives anymore because we did bring out the worst in each other, but I am grateful I knew him and hope he is doing better now

I have a similar relationship with a guy. But unlike bojack, we grew and are the bestest of friends now. We share an unspoken understanding for each other's joys and pain. Speaking of which... I think I should hit him up for a drink.

It's a will-they-won't-they that is firmly on the side of Won't. Like if Friends had been honest about Ross and Rachel being *terrible* for each other.

I too wonder why my brain won’t let me watch things I enjoy, in fact I’m putting off something I’ve been looking forward to right now 😅 That said, this is a wonderful analysis and I’m so glad it got recommended to me. I had this sort of vague understanding of how the show sets up their dynamic vs how it actually pays off but you’ve made it a lot clearer.

Thank you, this is an AMAZING analysis and I hope you make more Bojack content!! I especially would like to hear your thoughts about Princess Carolynn cause I feel like she isn't talked about a whole lot. Honestly this helped "rephrase" (not the best term but I can't think of it) How I feel about the first two seasons of Bojack. I like them, but I feel like they're very slow and I could never figure out what the intent really was, but this helped me realize it is to kind of subvert or give reality to the manic pixie dream girl love story trope and give it reality/depth in the sense as to why those dynamics are bad and just because you have the appeal to someone it doesn't mean it's the best thing or you to go for it. Diane and Bojack while they do have things in common often end up complimenting the worst traits in each other which is why it would never work out for them fully. I think you brought up a lot of really good points I haven't heard anybody talk about before so please please make more!!
