This is an interesting bout and a rare example of kenjutsu in use on KZitem, with a number of good and bad point worth looking at. The first and most impressive thing is that these two have actually managed to transcend the static nature of traditional kata and apply the waza in a dynamic way, this is something many Japanese-trained martial artists either can't do or never dare attempt. The second good thing is that as they are fencing they are still largely sticking to traditional technique, it hasn't become wild flailing indistinguishable from bad martial arts the world over, it looks distinctly Japanese. On the other hand, there are a number of areas that could be improved. The first and most obvious is that there is a disconnect between the blade work and the foot work, they either aren't moving their feet at all, or the steps are out of sync with their attacks and defenses. This is why we can see the kenjutsuka leaning back and forth awkwardly throughout the video, they know instinctively that they are either too close or too far a way, but they aren't using their feet to adjust the distance in real time to solve the issue. In addition, many of the "cuts" we see with the bokken are actually being delivered as percussive hits with none of the push-pull mechanic necessary to really cut with a sharp blade. Beyond this, it is clear throughout the exchanges that the kenjutsuka know a variety of techniques, but not necessarily when and why they should be used. Long exchanges repeatedly occur because both parties are repeating the same action over and over again, typically head cut, parry, head cut, parry. If instead the sequence had looked more like head cut, parry, feint of head cut, cut stomach the exchanges could have either been more decisive or developed into a higher level of complexity. Likewise some of the flashier techniques like the one-handed cut are perfectly viable in a bout, but only if you understand the timing and proper distance to set them up. Critique aside, its a good video and everything I listed above is quite normal for newer practitioners or those who haven't had much experience with live bouts. Work on your fundamentals (including remaining calm when a bokken is coming at your face!) and you should be able to iron out the kinks. P.S. I am aware this is a three year old video and that those involved may have improved since then.

As a safety suggestion, bokken are supposed to be used for kata, not for sparring, even it is more play fighting. Shinai and full bogu are what you should be using for "sparring". It is good you are mostly lightly hitting bokken together, because a proper strike to the head with Bokken, even while wearing a "men" (Kendo helmet) would likely kill you or give a you cracked cranium and possible brain damage. Have fun. Just be safe.

Certainly not Kendo. We don't practice whatever this was meant to be in Japan. You can join classes for contact drills but they are taught as precise counter/one-shot techniques as part of specific schools. If you want chaotic full contact, like this; but with more of an attempt at techniques/scoring - then HEMA is a good call from the comments under this video. Although 'european'; HEMA has had many bring Katana/Tachi and otherwise for testing purposes and you won't find a better opportunity to learn the limitations and strengths of weapons than when experiencing them crossed with different types from around the world. Its a good learning opportunity if the class is half decent.

Using this type of mask is bad for full sparring - no protection against thrusts ( in this video they don't thrust at all?) and the back of the head. You need a gorget too. Eyes should not be an open area. You can easily break ribs with a stiff thrust especially with a wooden sword that doesn't bend. Don't do full sparring in this type of gear - it will cause trauma or lead to bad habits.
