Absolutely! ❤I've always loved her touching relationship with Macy. There was a heartbreaking moment when Macy told Sally "You're not going to die! You're not going to die" in a tone almost like she's trying to _talk some sense into Sally._ It's like she's trying to convince Sally that these catastrophic thoughts are just as silly now as they were in episode 1039, when Macy had to convince a neurotic Sally over and over again that she wasn't dying (when in fact she was pregnant). Back then, Sally's belief that she was going to die was played for laughs, and this time it's tragic because we know it's _not_ ridiculous at all. And Macy knows it too, which is why she eventually stops trying to reassure Sally, and instead promises to take care of CJ.

Farewell to Michael Sabatino as Anthony Armando. Now that Anthony has finally been caught and Thorne will be released, the show can focus 100% (as opposed to only 99%) on Ridge, who is the real victim here. You know, this actually is a great storyline idea! Both Angela and Anthony have reason to want revenge on Thorne and this would've been a way to keep Thorne and Macy together while still giving them an exciting storyline. Bill Bell would've done this kind of villain second act. On Y&R, when David Kimble was finally exposed as a serial k ill er and Nina 🔫 him, that felt like an ending but it he survived, faked his death and came back for _another_ round to get Nina's money. And of course Sheila's ending seemed to come in the farmhouse fire too but she had a whole second act on B&B. This would've been a great way to do the same thing with Anthony and Angela (love the alliterative names too).

*Macy's transformation* I love how in this episode Macy transforms from a terrified little girl to a fierce figh ter who wrestles the 🔫 away from a psy cho tic unaliver much big ger and stronger than her. And what causes this change in her, this transition into "survival mode", is that she is figh ting for _someone else's_ life besides her own. Both Macy's frailty and her capacity for strength are on full display here. Macy tends to handle stressful situations poorly, but _extremely_ stressful situations surprisingly well. But she is a good person and that often gives her a disadvantage - like when she can't bring herself to use the 🔫. This (being physically able to get the we a pon but psychologically unable to fire it) is exactly the kind of constraint on the Good Girl archetype that limits her agency and plot control. A "less Good" Macy could have defeated Anthony herself in this scene, but instead she had to wait for the police to arrive because she couldn't have "bl ood on her hands".

Great character outline! The good girl (or guy) who gets the upper hand at the end but refuses to unalive the villain is such a common trope and one that often gets viewers groaning (so many times in movie theaters the audience will yell at a hero/heroine to just pull the trig g er!). Our favorite Disney films have this too. The best one is the closeup on the Beast's face when he could've easily dropped Gaston but doesn't and the tinkly score and the Beast's expression tells the viewer: "This is a good person on the _inside._ The only "beast" in this scene is Gaston."
@annieo6527

@@NewYorkNick0607 yes! And by the way, this scene also has some striking similarities to a scene from season 13 (this second half of my post just got caught in algo so here goes again). *SPOILER for season 13* There are some very obvious psychological and structural similarities between today's scene and Macy's first death (the car crash scenes). Macy feels first defeated, then irrationally defiant (choosing death over playing by her antagonist's rules), then disaster strikes and shakes sense into her, making her instantly completely rational and focused on finding a way out of the life-threatening situation, both for herself and the injured person next to her. So in both cases, this shift from irrationally and defiantly not caring whether she lives or dies to rational "survival instinct" is caused by her needing to save _someone other than herself._ Also, her goodness again places her at a disadvantage because she insists on being the last one rescued from the car, and ends up not being rescued at all.

*Anthony and Sheila* We have discussed before how Anthony's and Sheila's storyline are connected, and they follow each other quite closely: James pretending to be in love with Sheila to free himself - Macy pretending to be in love with Anthony to free Thorne. Sheila going off the rails over James' betrayal, staging a "goodbye party" that ends at 🔫point - Anthony having the identical reaction to Macy's be tr ayal. The intended vic tims reacting with defiance, basically _daring_ Sheila/Anthony to fi re the 🔫. But that's where the storylines diverge, showing the difference between Sheila and Anthony. When challenged, Sheila _backs down_ while Anthony _doesn't._ Only Anthony actually goes through with his attempted unalivement. This shows how Sheila is human and is capable of understanding love, while Anthony is evil to the core. Sheila evokes sympathy in her final scene, while there can be none for Anthony. And, because of this, we have much less sympathy for James than we do for Macy, in spite of their actions being very similar. It's also a matter of different in subjectivity/point of view - both stories are told from the woman's perspective, and so we feel that James' actions are more problematic from a moral perspective than Macy's, which seem entirely justified. The struggle between James and Sheila, where Sheila wanted to unalive James using a 🗡, but he managed to make her lose her balance and took it away from her, is also mirrored in today's scene with Macy and Anthony.
@NewYorkNick0607

Exactly. Well stated. And in fact whereas Sheila makes a sacrifice of herself (taking her own life while acknowledging the goodness of her enemies) and earns Eric's forgiveness in the moment and a redemptive rebirth later, it's _Sally_ not Anthony who makes the sacrificial act in this storyline.

*Nick,* I'm sure you noticed the "Have It Both Ways" at the end, where Sally passes out and Macy sobs over her lifeless body. It is far more dramatically satisfying _in the moment_ to have Sally *actually* sacrifice her life for her daughter and die in Macy's arms. But long-term, Sally is too important for the show to lose, and her death would make B&B less interesting (and also take away from the happy ending that Thorne and Macy are in the process of earning). So instead we get this scene, which could easily be a death scene, and which Macy obviously _believes_ to be her mother's last moments, without the show actually confirming whether or not Sally dies, thus leaving the door open for her to survive (and giving the viewers the chance to see _both_ scenarios play out). And, in keeping with your Beauty and the Beast post - this trope is _also_ very common in Disney, and it is _exactly_ what happens when the Beast "dies" in Belle's arms.
@NewYorkNick0607
7 ай бұрын
Interesting! Before you mentioned it, I would've said Sally "dying" is more of a "fakeout" than Having It Both Ways but you're right that it functions the same way in that it lets the viewer experience and appreciate Sally's sacrifice while still allowing her to live and we get both a mournful and a joyful ending. So yes it _is_ having it both ways.
@annieo6527
7 ай бұрын
@@NewYorkNick0607 yes, I appreciate the distinction you made between a "fakeout" and "having it both ways"! I agree that if we had actually seen Sally wake up afterwards, it would probably have been more of a "fakeout". But this scene, at the point where it ends, has the "finality" of an actual death scene, and this is never actually reversed, giving the next episode the feel of an "alternate scenario". Come to think of it, I'd say in this scene we have a "Schroedinger's Sally" - Sally can be considered _both dead and alive_ until we see the next episode. 😂

Such a contrasting tale of two mothers in this show today : On one hand we have Sally, who I consider to be the ultimate greatest mother on the show, who would do anything (including climbing a fire escape in what must have been a Belief treated suit) to save her daughter.. Even taking a bullet for her. Then we have Maggie... And it is clear that Macy would do anything for her too - note how after her mother was injured, Macy forgot all about her fear and became completely focused on taking care of Sally, trying to stop her bl ee ding, trying to call for an am bu lance, and basically not caring that she was doing all this _at g u n point._

I love Sally's character. But I do remember when she turned her back on Macy because of Anthony. She had nothing to do with her for quite sometime. That also was a mother-daughter-lover triangle. In my opinion both men were the ig-its. Oh and Jessica never mention Dylan by his name to her mom. And Maggie never said her friends name either. So don't blame Maggie for the triangle. And I know she knew he had a girlfriend so you don't need to go there. And also ... It's a Soap. 😊

*Anthony's final act* I found Anthony Armando *absolutely fascinating* to watch knowing how his story arc in its entirety would play out, because from his first scene I was wondering if the writers had his "dark side" planned all along. And the more I saw, the more I was convinced that they did at least have some idea (or if not, they retraced their steps and made excellent use of character history), because there is this incredible narrative "mirror symmetry" going on, from the very beginning. There are so many plot points and details that first occur in Anthony's introduction storyline, and then return in a more sinister form, in the reverse order, in his exit storyline, to the point where Anthony's entire two year run on the show becomes a kind of _palindrome_ (like I described in episode 1956). Anthony's story arc starts with him in Thorne and Macy's bedroom, about to take advan tage of Macy, and being interrupted by Thorne. And it ends almost two years later in the exact same place, and the exact same way (and in his last scene, he is even talking about that first scene). Even the "choreography" of the initial confrontation between Thorne and Anthony is replicated with Anthony and Macy (Anthony does to Macy what Thorne did to Anthony in the first scene), including the presence of a third, incapacitated, person in the room. Sally then opens the door to Anthony, inviting him into Macy's life, which is mirrored at the end of the storyline by her deciding to get him _out_ of Macy's life (also referencing this "mirror point" in actual dialogue). Then there's Thorne's initial reaction that Macy must stay away from Anthony at all costs, and his strong dislike of Anthony, which seemed like over the top jea lou sy at the time, but he also mentioned that she was putting herself in "harm's way", which turned out to be prophetic much later (when he again insisted that she must stay away from Anthony, and Anthony and Thorne were literally mortal enemies). There's Anthony's overinflated ego and his belief that he is irresistible, which also ended up being his Achilles heel (and almost his downfall) in his final storyline. There's "nice Anthony" preventing Macy from falling off the wagon by suggesting they drink together, mirrored by "evil Anthony" later suggesting Macy have a drink with him although he knows she can't. There's Macy (awkwardly) acting as a fit model for Anthony and him joking about seeing her without her clothes, as well as Anthony designing a bathing suit for her that was intended to disintegrate and expose her, mirrored by the time she had a fitting for her wedding dress (which Anthony designed) and he "accidentally" made the top fall off. And Anthony feigning grief over a (non-existent) dead cat in order to win Macy's sympathies is absolutely BRILLIANT foreshadowing. The entire storyline of Ivana's unalivement is basically the dead cat gambit magnified. There is Anthony's way of using another woman (Sally and Ivana, respectively) to mask his true intentions towards Macy. Also, there is Anthony hinting in 1994 at having a "dark side" that he would show to Macy when she got to know him better, and his 1995 storyline ending with Macy trying to get him to show her his dark side. And finally the message Macy sends to Anthony both at the beginning and the end of their storyline that he's "Never gonna get it" (although these two mirror points don't quite fit into the palindrome pattern). All this adds up to a fascinating long term character arc based on _abstract symmetry,_ which is quite unusual for a soap. Anthony's unalivement of Ivana is, in my opinion, the most evil deed ever done on this show (even more sa d i s tic and diabolical than any of Sheila's individual cr i mes, although of course she has _more_ of them. But Sheila's evil is mainly "de fen sive" whereas Anthony's evil is "of fen sive" - Sheila is a cornered animal, Anthony is a pre da tor). And I find it intriguing to see if there were signs early on in Anthony's character history that he had it in him. In retrospect, I'd say yes, there were signs but they were subtle - so subtle in fact that they could pass for harmless in one did not know anything about his future storylines. But in hindsight, they become major red flags - Anthony's ar ro gance, his emotional mani pulation, his casual untruths, his offer to show Macy his "dark side", his crossing lines without asking for permission. Another dead giveaway early on was how Keith related to him. Keith has always been portrayed as Macy's "guardian angel" - he was an excellent judge of character and saw things as they truly were, and he was always "pure" in his intentions towards Macy. The way the show contrasted Keith and Anthony was striking, and did a lot to convince me that Anthony was always meant to be nefarious, even "diabolical" (in the Mephistophelian sense). Another hint in that direction was Macy out of the blue asking the "pure-hearted" Kevin to say a pra yer for her just before Anthony mani pulated her into having dinner with him. And of course this contrast was magnified through Keith and Anthony being cast as Cyrano and "Evil Cyrano", respectively, even going so far as having their letters be quite similar in phrasing and subject matter. Anthony was the archetypal Big Bad Wolf from the start - and this parallel is never more clear than in his final scene, where having first de vou red the Grandmother (Sally), he sets his sights on Little Red Riding Hood (Macy), but both of them are rescued by the Huntsman (Thorne, using Burke as a proxy) showing up at the last minute to save them and catch the Wolf (Anthony).

Excellent summation! Thanks for putting this all in one place for us. I had always thought of Anthony k ill in g Ivana as a dark turn for the character that they wrote later (either because the actor was leaving or they didn't know where else to take the character). But your posts and thorough analysis over this entire storyline has convinced me that it was either deliberately planned from the beginning, or they were holding that in reserve for the character in case they couldn't find another "avenue" for him on the show (or in case this was an avenue they wanted to go down for Thorne's redemption), or it was one of those unconscious writerly things where they conceived a character so well that they could locate things and traits in his history that would lead to this dark path. Your "Never Gonna Get It" point yesterday made me realize too that Macy did indeed sing that early on _to Anthony_ early which feels too pointed to not be intentional. They never meant for him to be a real romantic partner for her, at least not in a way where she would ever reciprocate his feelings.

@@NewYorkNick0607 speaking of the "Never Gonna Get It" point - I just rewatched that scene in episode 1709, and the entire time that Macy is singing to Anthony, he is sitting directly underneath a big sign that says "WRONG WAY" (and which is visible _to Macy_ throughout her performance). And yesterday, when Anthony told Macy to get on the bed, it was as if she saw that sign again, and decided to go the _other way._

I wonder if anyone, anywhere, at any time in the history of the world, watched this episode and thought "I can't wait for the Jessica scenes!" The shift in tone is so jarring that these scenes actually _detract_ from the tension of the other storyline - it's difficult to take Maggie and Jessica's relationship woes seriously when contrasted with Sally and Macy fighting for their lives, and this really k i lls the suspenseful atmosphere of the episode as a whole. (This really should have been a one storyline episode - why not include scenes of Thorne alone in his cell worrying and thinking of Macy, or Saul and Darla at Spectra, or Stephanie actually giving Thorne a thought and figuring out what's going on?) There is a kind of narrative irony behind it, though - both storylines show the bond between a mother and a daughter potentially being destroyed because of a man. And Maggie is just about to embark on a journey down the same fateful path that ended up leading Sally to where she is now. Like Sally before her, Maggie is risking her relationship with her daughter because she is in love with a man her daughter is also involved with, and Sally's fate serves as a kind of cautionary tale to Maggie. So maybe there's a point in contrasting these two storylines after all - it highlights the true stakes in the situation: no man is worth losing your child over.

I thought the same thing too - that Maggie et al were such a drastic distraction from what was going on in another part of town. But I do love your observation about the relationship between a mother and daughter potentially being ruined by a man, which is absolutely the common narrative here. One scene just lagging behind in terms of the potential conflict that may ensue in that mother/daughter relationship. "The other _*girl*_".

Agree with you on both counts: the jarring tonal shift and the narrative irony (I left you an example in a separate post of an ironic _statement_ that connects the two storylines 😉).
