Portuguese Biscuit cake
Layers of coffee butter cream interspersed with layers of Maria biscuit soaked in strong coffee!
A divine combination!
It was very popular in the 1970s and 80s, existed in all Portuguese restaurants, and delighted kids and adults alike!
It is said that it is a Portuguese recipe, dated 1959, where the classic cake recipe appears in Portugal in a culinary magazine, accompanied by a black and white flower-shaped illustration. It was also very popular because it did not need to go to the oven.
BUT experts say that Portugal was not his birthplace ...
It would have been in Grenoble, at a biscuit and cookie company, Brun, which quickly became known and would even have been the official supplier of the army during the First World War.
Immediately after the war, the family company would have sought to diversify its offer, creating the famous Petit Brun extra and Thé Brun thin biscuits.
And that was where the cookie cake was created, which was given the name gâteau de famille, at the end of the first half of the 20th century, the recipe for this cake would come together with the company's own Thé Brun cookies, a recipe that was in everything identical to the recipe that would become the Portuguese Biscuit Cake!
Fortunately for us, he was not so successful in his native country, and here he continues to delight many!
