The sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca is a basilica dedicated to the Catholic Marian cult and rises on the hill of the Guard, so called because there was always a body of militias to guard and defend the city, it is connected to the city by a portico of 666 arches: the longest in the world - erected if you include the Meloncello arch, between 1674 and 1733, with the offers of private citizens - which climbs up to the top of the hill from Porta Saragozza with a path of almost 4 km . The history of the sanctuary is linked to the icon kept inside, which gave rise to the legend about the foundation of the sanctuary itself and determined its fortune over the centuries, making it a pilgrimage destination. The legend concerning the arrival of the icon depicting a Madonna and Child is told belatedly in the chronicle of Graziolo Accarisi, a Bolognese of the fifteenth century. It tells of a Greek pilgrim-hermit who, on a pilgrimage to Constantinople, received the painting, attributed to Luke the Evangelist, from the priests of the basilica of Santa Sofia, so that he could take it to the "Mount of the Guard", as it was indicated in an inscription. on the painting itself. So the hermit set off in Italy in search of the Guardia hill and only in Rome did he learn, from the Bolognese senator Pascipovero, that this mountain was located near Bologna. Arriving in the Emilian city, he was welcomed by the city authorities and the table of the Madonna and child was carried in procession on the mountain.
The documents deemed authentic speak to us instead of Angelica Bonfantini, who in a document dated 30 July 1192, decided to give herself to the hermit life on Monte della Guardia, with the intention of building an oratory and a church.
Angelica obtained the interest of Pope Celestino III, who with a document dated 24 August 1193 ordered the bishop of Bologna Gerardo di Gisla to place, at Angelica's request, the first stone of the "new church to be built on Mount della Guardia", brought directly from Rome and blessed by the Pope himself. It was laid on May 25, 1194.
Some Nuns were introduced there for the service of this Church, and until 1799 they have always done their work for the greater decorum of this Sanctuary.
After years of decadence, due to the Bolognese political instability and the decentralized position, the sanctuary was once again successful thanks to the growing pilgrimage that developed following the so-called "miracle of the rain" of 5 July 1433, when the spring rains, which risked damaging the harvest ceased when a procession arrived that carried the icon to the city.
The current building is the result of a new intervention begun in 1723 with truly ingenious architecture by Carlo Francesco Dotti. On 25 March 1765, after 42 years of work, the cardinal archbishop Vincenzo Malvezzi inaugurated the new sanctuary. The dome, the façade and the external lateral tribunes were finished by Giovanni Giacomo Dotti in 1774, based on drawings left by his father.
The dominant style is Baroque and is surmounted in the center by a large dome with a lantern, which houses an observatory 42 meters high.
Among the works found inside, there are the altarpieces of:
- Donato Creti (The Coronation of the Virgin, second chapel on the right, and The Virgin and the Patron Saints of Bologna, second chapel on the left);
- Guido Reni (Our Lady of the Rosary, third chapel on the right);
- Guercino (a version of Christ appearing to the Mother, major sacristy).
The crypt was built at the behest of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Nasalli Rocca, whose remains are preserved here in a monumental tomb, the work of Bruno Boari.
Center of popular devotion, the icon depicts a Madonna and Child datable between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century, it seems attributable to a Western hand, but certainly belonging to a Byzantine cultural climate, as indeed much of the figurative culture of the period.According to the consolidated iconography, the Madonna, represented half-length, holds the blessing Jesus in her arms.
