Thanks for the Videos. I was listening to a Bolt Podcast and they explained hitting vehicles (page 10) defiantly. They interpreted the rule as the Vehicle Center must be inside the Template. Not the Center of the Templet has to be over the center of the target. I do not know if any FAQ updates clarified the rule. Love to know your thoughts.

Sure. The rulebook states, "...the template must be placed as close as possible to the centre of the vehicle." pg 107 Further in the paragraph, it states, "Note that HE shots, even though they are placed in the centre of the vehicle,.." There is no FAQ on this because it is clear in the rule book. Paul Walker from Warlord games even commented on this very question in the Bolt Action Facebook group noting the same. You can further note that under the HE Weapon Rules (pg 68), "First pick a place to put the centre of the template..." So you are always positioning the centre of the template. In the case of infantry/artillery units, you place the center to hit the maximum # of models. For vehicles you place it as close tot he centre oft he vehicle as possible. This is the ruling from Warlord Games staff themselves so the guys in the podcast are wrong. It happens. That is why I put the video series out, to try to convey the rules as they actually are written/intended/clarified in the books, FAQ's and Warlord forums. Have fun with the game.

So if you don’t choose to fire he and the weapon shooting has 1 shot does that mean it can only kill 1 miniature So like a light anti tank gun has a pen value of +4 But if it uses HE which’s 1” it only gets 1 pen value

Great video. I found it very helpful. Question: for artillery, can they fire solid shells instead? If so, where can I find the stats in the rule book for that? (I'm new to "Bolt Action")

Sorry for the late reply. Your comment showed up in the Spam section. Anyway, in the rule book, in the weapon chart (use the reference sheet in the back, it's easier to find). You will notice that there will either be a PEN value of +1 to +7 or an HE with a measurement in inches. If the entry has an HE value only, it cannot use solid shot (with a higher Pen value). If it has a Pen value and is an Autocannon or an Anti-Tank gun, then it can choose to fire solid shot or HE. I don't have the rulebook with me so I can't find the page right now.

House Rule. Avoid arguments over radius and just apply same as HE vs. Units in building when using HE vs. Units. Or something similar. Auto cannon template too complicated, IMHO.

I do agree that the multiple AC templates are more complicated but I understand what they are trying to do with the rule. We have never had any arguments over templates/radius and we appreciate the fact that using a template means that the player needs to pay attention to model spacing when facing artillery. Artillery is more devastating the more densely packed the men are so the template method reflects that well. Also, an artillery shell going off inside a building is more dangerous than one going off outside so using the Hits vs. Units in Buildings for both does not offer the player the increased threat of hiding in buildings in the presence of artillery. Having said all that, I didn't play it in 1st edition but you could simply use those HE rules, with their random number of hits, as a house rule.

So First: you place the template over the unit your hitting, Then: say there’s 6 people inside the template do you roll 6 dice to hit if direct. Then: roll to damage Did i get this right
@DZSabre

Not quite. If you are firing direct or indirect, you make 1 roll to hit the unit per the direct fire or indirect fire rules. Then, if you hit, you place the template and you roll to wound for each model even partially under the template. Do in your example, if you hit and covered 6 men, you would roll 6 dice and try to wound the models. Remember to include the PEN value and that 1's always fail to wound.

At the scale of Bolt Action platoons at max 30 men, there shouldn't be any artillery anyway. Light mortars at the best . BA players need to play some battalion/ divisional level micro armor .

Though true as far as Platoon level equipment goes, most engagements had artillery, medium and heavy mortars as well as MMG/HMG platoons/batteries assigned to the companies and spread across the platoons in support. Having said that, I try to field a complete platoon with light mortar, medic and sniper (designated Marksman) before I add the heavy stuff. In the interest of historical accuracy, the British, Germans and especially the French had their light artillery deployed within the first line of engagement in attack and defense. A successful platoon commander (in WW2 or even now) must be skilled at using the heavier support assigned to his mission. The same is true for tabletop games.

big guns on the field let you represent a platoon infiltrating and trying to knock out a big gun, with the big gun crew shooting point blank at them in self defense
