Back then, I liked Bombay Velvet but found it too crammed. The film tried to pack in too much in too little time. Today, I feel the story was ideal for a web show format. Kashyap could've sprawled out his multiple ideas and themes over the course of a few crisp episodes and that would have also eased a viewer like myself into the world of Bombay Velvet. Nonetheless, I always ask people to give this movie a shot without any prejudices. There's a lot to like.

So glad that Indian critics are now reevaluating Bombay Velvet. I'm a non-desi Bollywood fan and I've loved that move from the first time I saw it and truly think it's one of Kashyap's best. Other non-Indian fans like Erin and Matt over at Bollywood is for Lovers have also been on board since day one. Is it possible it hits differently with a Western audience who associate it more with the noir/gangster films of Hollywood's golden age? I love it because it seems able to balance the Hindi film narrative style with the Hollywood golden age glamour to perfection. And Anushka as Rosie is one of the most underrated performances in recent years. She's luminous and heartbreaking and the Dhadaam Dhadaam lipsynching performance alone is one of the best ever.
@AshutoshKumar-zo1zo
3 жыл бұрын
It is definitely possible. As mentioned in the video, the movie became a victim of the westernization and homage to international cinema. I think a lot of film lovers still appreciate this film for that exact reason, while you can understand why people who didn't have the context to any of the underlying references didn't like it. If you consider the film independently as a film and not as a Bollywood film, it works better. But it is a baggage you can't escape being associated to which led to the eventual reaction to this film.

The BEST PART of Bombay Velvet was it's music. No doubt about it. I find myself listening to it every other day. Amit Trivedi, Neeti Mohan & Shefali Alvares created magic. What didn't work: 1. Karan Johar: I feel this film suffered because most people could not look at Karan Johar as the antagonist. He may have done a few scenes well and in theory it did sound doable but overall it did not work. Someone competent like a Manoj Bajpayee would have elevated that role. Sadly, Karan's presence made Anurag's fans diss the film too. 2. Length: The film was quite thrilling in the first half. I remember watching it in the theater and at interval I realized that there's a long way to go. Like you guys said the second half was painfully long and it had tropes that just didn't tie the film together. As much as I enjoyed the climax, it came a bit too late. This has nothing to do with the film but Piku had released on 7th May and this released on 15th May I think. The well-deserved praise around it made people want to skip Bombay Velvet. I remember the unfair comparisons being made. Sadly, these things affect the success of the film too. I felt a lot of films have had these problems but people were especially nasty towards this movie. It's not an amazing film but it's not the worst film either.
@kjkls

Naseeruddin Shah suggested Karan's name for the part when he read in the script that khambata had a crush on Johny. You are absolutely right about the casting being right on paper. I didnt think karan was extraordinary in the role. He was pretty average plus the way it was written it really needed a man of gravitas to bring some weight to the character. Karan ended up being karan.

Hi, this particular discussion and the choice of re-reviewing Bombay Velvet has quite resonated with me. Especially because when I had just watched it (sometime after its release), I was quite surprised to know that the film didn't do well commercially. This happens with me quite often. I remember feeling the same way about Roy too (though not the same intensity). I prefer Bombay Velvet over and above Roy but the latter wasn't as bad it was declared after its release. It certainly had some redeeming qualities. Maybe, you guys can pick up Roy for a re-review. I have another request. The other day I was watching Fight Club. The two third part of it made me feel like it was the best film I have ever watched. Just so so good with its content (critique of the capitalist-consumerist way of lives to set the stage for nihilism and anarchism). Just a lot of nuanced philosophy through the dialogues of Brad Pitt's character - presented in a simple way for audience who doesn't necessarily read academic discourses on the same. I just somehow felt a bit disconnected with the last parts of the film. Here is a spoiler alert but I am quite certain that both of you have already watched it. It has such cult following. Cinema lovers would know it already. So, the part where it is revealed that Brad Pitt's character (throughout) was the un-conscious of the lead character reveals the intelligence of the story teller. I hadn't at all seen it coming. Pitt's character was so so smooth (one ot his best performances, in my regard). But something wasn't right about this twist. Perhaps the execution of the screen play. I will some day read the book from which the film was adapted. I am hoping that the book perhaps did more justice to this intelligent twist of brining in the unconscious rebellion of the subject's psyche. I find it intelligent also because I read a lot around the academic concept 'Hegemony'. I won't get into its elaboration but it shall suffice to say that the most nuanced position on this concept brings psycho-analysis into dialogue with marxism. And thus talks about the role of the unconscious of subjects living under and giving consent to the hegemony of capitalist ways of thinking and being. It is thus my hypothesis that the story writers turn to the unconscious of the lead character was a very intelligent move. Perhaps it was the cinematic execution of the same which faltered. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts about the same.

Thank you so much for doing this. What I felt while watching Bombay Velvet in theatres was, okay this is good, something better will come. And it never came. The second half was way too convoluted and yes, Bollywood-ish. Going in as an AK fan, you want something out of the box to happen, but unfortunately, that didn't. But if we remove all the baggage and expectations, it's a pretty decent movie and a really cool tribute to the movies like The Roaring Twenties. Of course, the best thing about this movie was Amit Trivedi's music and background score. The soundtrack is easily one of the Top 5 Bollywood albums post 2000. Behroopia has been my go-to song when I need some peace, since the day I watched the movie. One of the other things I clearly remember about the movie is how close it comes to the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, which incidentally is also produced by Martin Scorsese initially and ran from 2010-2015. So that show more or less has amazing jazz numbers in alternate episodes. The beats of an old-school jazz club with eccentric singers and dancers are strikingly similar, and almost of the same great quality. I remember that because I was bingeing on that show at the time this movie released.

We all know there was also a lot of Raveena Tandon in the movie as well, so the possibility of more of Vicky Kaushal can also be there. I just wish the audiences demanded a director's cut for this film as well. We need to watch it!

@@nisargdalal5840 mostly it doesn't happen with Indian movies, but many movies have different versions and get re-released either in theatres, festivals, or simply added when the DVD comes out.

I wish they made it like gangs of wassepur - in 2 parts, that would complete the many subplots they built and just do full justice to the subtext and era they created

After your retake I finally watched the movie and oh boy it was so good, it was better than so many of his movies including sanju, I feel very sad that people spend money on movies like housefull 4, race 3 radhe but the same people bash Bombay velvet.

Anurag Kashyap is probably one director who would have agreed to be a part of this conversation. He may have needed a drink or two to get through it and say his point of view. Certainly its a film that does not deserve to live in the infamy it does.

I can imagine Bombay Velvet being a mini series were Kashyap could’ve explored the whole gold smuggling/newspaper baron/Mill business/Bombay police nexus. But then would big stars do a series (since it’s not the big screen) because a big budget is warranted due to the ‘60s period look’ and what not. Bombay Velvet is not cringy nor a remotely badly movie - it was just not entertaining enough and definitely not for a mass audience. From a financial standpoint, if you’re gonna make an expensive movie you would have to target a large audience and the big audience of India is not made up of the elites or even the middle class so how would they appreciate the hard work of Amit Trivedi’s attempt at Jazz music or the production design of the club or the VFX (which was very decent) or the whole noir/Hollywood golden age gangster movie aesthetics. It’s not the audience’s fault that it doesn’t appeal to their sensibilities or Anurag’s filmmaking - Fox Studios and Phantom should’ve known better and should’ve went for a television series or tried a lower budget with reasonable compromising without affecting the narrative.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshi please..it is a masterpiece of a movie..the background score..the acting..the story..One has to be a Byomkesh bakshi fan to truly truly have a complete joyride watching the movie..I had so much fun..I cannot even put it into words..put out a Byonkesh Bakshi revisit..maybe that'd give Dibakar a nudge to make a sequel..

Thank you for revisiting this film. I am pretty sure that Anurag shall view this video. Anupama Ma'am, can you please put a word to Anurag sir, to add the edited portion from Pahlaj Nihalani, or the longer version. As you mention there was a lot in movie which was was disconnected. I don't think additional shoots are possible. I am drawing comparisons from justice league which was a disaster when released initially. But Zack snyder's version gives a beautiful closure. Think about it, it was an Anurag's dream project and in several interviews he has said that he want to revisit this sometime
