Derringers are made to be used like you said at the end, and they do that rather well. When it's surprisingly, suddenly up close, and personal. You will not have the time to draw, and aim. It's point, and shoot time. Carry a large cartridge derringer, so if it's ever needed the large caliber round, and it's blast should give you the opportunity to quickly disengage. Who would care if it hurts your hand under those circumstances. I practiced, and learned to use my middle finger for the trigger while using my index finger laying along the barrel(3") as if I was pointing at my target. Just make sure your finger is not long enough to extend beyond the barrel end for obvious reasons. Using this method I could consistently place rounds in the center mass of a silhouette target at 8' without aiming. Granted this is not for everyone. Derringers were not designed for two handed aiming to hit something over 3 yards, but for a quick one hand draw, and fire for a up close sudden threat. Bond's firearms with their interchangeable barrels will allows you to use a light caliber round for practice, and a heavy caliber for carry. Wish they had been around when I was practicing.

Great feedback, and I agree. I don’t see myself carrying this often, if ever, I prefer a subcompact .380 over this, but I bought it because I love the derringers in old westerns. They always intrigued me

@@tonyrome655 best to ignore the existence of the movie - it's terrible FYI, cranky, Deadwood is violent, full of swearing, dark, and can be pretty brutal but it's great, and beautiful - Shakespearean

In the mid to late 1800’s the derringers were mostly 41 cal. Rimfire which was a very weak round, it would bounce off multiple layers of clothing. No need for Kevlar just a nice leather coat LOL

Hey Cranky, if you knew the weapon is only effective several feet away from the target, why were you shooting at targets so far away? I'm researching this firearm for personal carry. If I can get away from someone that's 20 yards from me I will. But it they're on top of me or charging me, this could be the gun. I would also know that after two shots the person could take it away from me and not be able to shoot me. Where with a semi auto there are multiple rounds that could be used on me.

I always like to push the limits- I never only shoot my pistols at 3-5 yards, I’m usually shooting at 7-10 yards. If I can hit farther away, I know I can hit closer targets. I would not recommend a double barrel derringer as a primary carry- get a LCP II or BodyGuard.380 which gives you a smaller lighter package, and more rounds in the magazine, faster reloading, and a reliable platform. Don’t get me wrong, these are viable for self defense, but they’re not easy to quickly present, cock, fire, and reload. They are a decent backup gun but weigh a ton and are kind of slow to reload and re-shoot. If you’re worried about someone taking your gun and using it on you, that is a bad mindset to get in. At that point you’re screwed no matter what you carry- unless it’s like an H&K P7 or something that is quirky to shoot.
