Great mates and young guns from the hit TV series Bondi Rescue, Trent 'Maxi' Maxwell and Troy 'Gonzo' Quinlan form part of the Bondi Lifeguard family -- a bunch of Aussie mates who happen to be lucky enough to work together and perform about 5,000 rescues over the summer period each year.
'Maxi' and 'Gonzo' have 15 years of lifeguarding experience between them and tend to everything from lost children and bluebottle stings to heart-stopping ocean rescues. They've seen their fair share of close calls and recall one of their most memorable rescues together which took place when they spotted two people 'going under' from the tower.
Maxi says "Troy sped over in the rhino and I grabbed the board and raced out and just got them in time. As I grabbed one guy he looked at me and said 'thank you for saving my life, I was gone'. That's one of the reasons why I love this job".
Self-described 'all round happy bloke' 'Maxi' is the definitely the louder of the two and rates 'Gonz' as a good bloke and a great mate -- although sometimes he thinks Gonz can be 'too nice' and needs to be more feisty. Gonz laughs 'Well he's already described himself, what more can I say except that Maxi's an unreal mate'.
Both have experienced first hand the shattering effects cancer can have with members from each of their families sadly passing away from the disease. Maxi lost his grandpa last year to melanoma, and Gonz has also had two grandparents who lost their battle with cancer -- one who suffered from melanoma and the other from prostate. Gonz's dad has also been treated for melanoma and has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
It's not hard to see why the boys both feel strongly about increasing awareness of men's cancer, the importance of regular check ups and encouraging men to speak up if something's not right when it comes to health.
No strangers to competition, the 2012 annual lifeguard challenge saw Gonz pipped at the post in 3rd place by Maxi who came in 2nd. With the boys set to take each other on in a speed challenge as part of the Top Gear Festival 'Star in a reasonably priced car' for Mate V Mate, could this be Gonz's chance to kick Maxi's butt?
