Got a chance to guide legendary fly fishers Hilary and Ebon. With a call and a chance opening it was on! Very cool people. We hit the flats with high hopes of landing a giant Hawaiian Bonefish. Cast after cast we tried to get that fly is the perfect spot. Hilary hit a few choice cast early on and got some chases and bits but no sets. These bonefish have a tendancy to suck the fly in a microsecond, and then spit the fly back out in the next second. You will see the line get tight and then nothing.
After about 7 hours and 15 minutes of an 8 hours day, Ebon hooks the first fish with a solid set. Hook-set the fish perfectly. The fish imediatly darts to the edge of the flat and into the abyss. Ebon runs and manages to get the fish untangled from some rocks and brings the fish back onto the flats. The fish was a giant!
Now it's Hilary's turn. We used the sun to mask our movement to the fish to tailing giants. A giant bone was coming across a weed patch. We put the fly right on the edge of the patch inline with the bones direction. Knowing where the fish will end up is the most important attributes to catching spooky fish. We place the fly about 10 yards infront the fish. She takes the slack out of the line, and we wait. It didn't take long and boom the fish was on! A record size fish landed within the last half hour of fishing. Two fish within 15 minutes.
Great meeting these ledgens and being able to share such a magical moment in Hawaii.
