This is one of the Best Westerns in recent years, in my opinion since unforgiven with Clint Eastwood. All of the characters give a stellar performance and though the story takes its time, you never find yourself bored. The actors each bring their own style and they complement each other perfectly. I also love how the film goes from being a traditional western, to a buddy road trip, and finally to a gruesome horror movie. Not many films can pull off that combination of genres, but this one does it perfectly. Definitely a must see, even if you're not a western fan.

Such a rarity. A film that has amazing acting, filmography, storyline, directing, and some of the nastiest gore you could ever image! All these things mentioned don’t mesh well with Over the top nasty gore and violence, but this one did is super well! This is a film everyone should watch at least once, but you’ll soon find out once is definitely not enough!
@phatnana2379
2 жыл бұрын
The gore works so well because it's actually pretty subdued! The acts of violence themselves obviously aren't but the fact that there's only 5min of gore over a +2hr runtime proves that the violence isn't just gratuitous, shock-value, shlock!! Without the grisly (prob the MOST grisly put to screen) violence, the story doesn't work! There'd be no stakes. No tension. No justification for how much they throw around the word "savages." Again... the violence in Bone Tomahawk is probably the most horrific we've seen on screen. Well, the most most horrific, REALISTIC violence instead of goofy torture-porn BS like in Terrifier, The Green Inferno (how people LIKE The Green Inferno is beyond me), and Hostel/Saw. BUT, some other movies where gruesome, realistic violence works well in a truly GOOD film are: - No Country For Old Men - A History of Violence - Dragged Across Concrete / Brawl In Cell Block 99 (Zahler's other two films) - Natural Born Killers - Tarantino's stuff (tho I like Bone Tomahawk MUCH more than Django or The Hateful Eight, honestly) PS: sorry for the 10,000 word essay I wrote but S. Craig Zahler's two Western novels are fantastic too and absolutely worth a read! "A Congregation of Jackals" and the aforementioned "Wraiths Of the Broken Land" They both feature the same excellent dialogue, well developed/smart characters, tension/suspense, creativity, terrifying villains, and Zahler's trademark horrific violence! In fact, those two novels actually form a kind of trilogy with Bone Tomahawk! A trilogy of different, unrelated Western stories with different characters that take place in the same fictional universe! I highly HIGHLY recommend them both! Tho, "Jackals" is definitely my personal favorite and stands JUST above "Wraiths" due to it's creativity and by having THEE most terrifying, heinous, vicious villain I've read/seen in a LONG time!

@@swan-oq8qk haha thanks, bud!! Obviously I'm a Bone Tomahawk fanboy lol!! I suggest it to ANYONE! I truly believe Bone Tomahawk's reputation as a gore-fest REALLY does it a disservice tho! It scares a lot of people away but also makes all the gore-hounds expect something ENTIRELY different than what they get! BT is like a character study! You spend a lot of the movie walking thru the desert talking but the rich dialogue builds the characters so well! There's no exposition-dumps either! You learn everything you need to know about the main characters thru actions and dialogue! So, when they finally get to where they're going (and the dread/tension has built to unbearable levels), you have expectations from knowing what everyone is capable of!! I compare it to the show The Wire! But ONLY because they're similar in the fact that, EVERY line and EVERY scene is important in some way! Either by building character, setting up something down the line, adding to the scope of the world, building tension, etc Bone Tomahawk is also a surprisingly FUNNY movie too! Lol sorry for gushing AGAIN! I really hope you enjoy it! If you don't mind a slow burning movie, that you need to pay attention to, that won't hold your hand, you should dig it!! Sidenote: a great example of the character building without exposition is the "read a book in the bathtub" scene! Feel free to comment back after watching the film! Theres span of ONE minute that speaks VOLUMES, showing you (thru actions) everything you need to know about three characters!!

@noneed4me2n7
2 жыл бұрын
@@syskusa6512 I’ve done a lot of research into that era and while yeah generally regular folks didn’t get up to those shenanigans on the regular, it wasn’t called the “wild west” for nothing. Boom towns were often the worst and you’d probably hear Obi One’s line to Luke about a hive of scum and villainy.
@syskusa6512
2 жыл бұрын
@@noneed4me2n7 that’s different from today how? I’d be willing to bet parts of Chicago, LA, San Francisco, DC, NYC, Denver, Albuquerque are as bad today as they ever were, some worse. I won’t even touch the little meth, crack towns out in the middle of nowhere these days that people disappear in regularly like the towns in the San Luis Valley in Colorado, or the indigenous areas in New Mexico, and Arizona where impoverished minorities are trafficked daily. If folks from the “Wild West” were to see what we have going on today it would make their stomachs turn. Humans have a tendency to believe the time they live in is better than what came before, and even lie or exaggerate about past events as proof. Remember the end of Wyatt Earp when the kid is telling Wyatt a story of what Wyatt did to protect his uncle and Wyatt says “some say it did not happen that way” and Josie reply’s “Don’t worry Wyatt, it happened that way.” Wyatt knew it didn’t happen that way, and personally I think that was the point of the scene, to say yeah there’s a lot written and said, but that’s doesn’t mean that’s what happened. The American Frontier was nicknamed the “Wild West” to sell dime novels, and much of the “wild” invented by Buffalo Bill for his Wild West Shows. Yeah frontier life is crazy, on any frontier, but the Wild West is a fictional term for exaggerated storytelling.

I remember seeing this at the London Film Festival in 2015. It was on a Sunday afternoon and the festival notes on the film did warn of an intense finale. After the film, the audience filed out in a stunned silence into the sunshine of Leicester Square with a sense of relief. I think I watched this on Netflix or something, it was kind of on a whim, boredom and time to waste. I was actually quite surprised how good it turned out to be. Not at all what I was expecting. Brooder was awesome, and uh, "that part," was absolutely wild!! 😂😂 If you know you know!! I highly recommend this flick. I always enjoy watching Kurt Russell. Though I do wish Cid Haig had a larger role, I'm a huge fan! May he Rest in peace!!

I did see this one and was unaware it was a horror film. That awareness quickly changed and the horror element was extremely well done.

I can't sing the Praises enough about this movie. It's fantastically horrifying without being surreal. The small amount of world-building really helps to facilitate the setting in the mood of the movie itself. If you're a fan of good movies you'll enjoy this one. I won't lie there are some jarring scenes but the focus is on the characters as any good movie usually is. Then again I am a guy that can appreciate any genre as long as it's well done.

It took awhile to get me intrigued, but it did captivate me, and I was silently hooked to the very end. Great movie. A couple of disturbing scenes they could have left to our imagination.

It's an A+ film. Great cast, wonderful production, and nightmarish antagonist all make for an awesome presentation. I believe it is a horror Western but there's nothing wrong with that. My favorite horror movie, Return of the living dead, creates an unforgettable mixture of comedy and horror.
