I think Paul Brady adds an extra dimension to an already impeccable cover of a Richard Thompson masterpiece. I'd known and loved Bonnie's version for years but heard this rendition on the radio one day, and it was like hearing it all over again for the very first time. Am I alone in sometimes wondering whether people are still creating and performing such songs? It feels like the gaps between hearing something new and comparable become greater and greater as time passes and all of us children of the 60's and 70's become older and older.

These two voices … can there be a better alchemy of two voices than Bonnie Raitt and Paul Brady? I’ve heard so many great vocal harmonies, but this may be among the very best in terms of how the voices blend to make something so much more than the sum of the parts. Right up there, stratospherically, with Celine and Andreas on The Prayer. I consider this the epitome of performance for this absolute epitome of songwriting.

The original version by Richard and Linda Thompson version will always be the closest to my heart, but Bonnie Raitt really does a superb job and it’s certainly head and shoulders over Tom Jones’ version. She really conveys the spirit of the song in her voice.

Slightly different version to the one she does with Richard Thompson - so many people have covered this great RT song but nobody does it better than Bonnie Raitt (with perhaps Gilmour's version coming in a close second)

I was full of hope before I listened to Dave Glmour sing this song. He is my favourite Rock singer and guitarist, but I wasn’t greatly moved by his rendition of this song - other than I love his voice anyway.

@@irobeen - interesting. I really like his version but I think Bonnie Rait's is my favourite. In 2019 I went to the Albert Hall for RT's 70th birthday party concert and Gilmour did Dimming of the Day and then RT and DG did an old Floyd number together - I think it's from Atom Heart Mother - Big Old Sun?? (not sure on title). I was amazed to hear that, prior to having a single pre concert rehearsal that day, these two greats had never played together! They made a great sound: I hope they get to play live together again.

Richard left her and 3 kids for a younger woman, that's what it's about. Linda singing it can't be matched, it's her life she's singing about. Saying that... Bonnie Raitt is a truely great ballad singer. I Can't Make You Love Me and Not Cause I Wanted To, are epic.
