An Azalea is a bush. What you need to do is remove the growth at the bottom of the tree. Next, if you are fortunate enough to have a single trunk you should prune out all competing trunks. Bonsai always look best with a single line. If you don't have a single trunk, you will have to try to develop one or live with it. You should grow the trunk up past where you want the crown then cut it back repeatedly to form the taper. After this you can start to grow the branches. This will take many years.

If the bonsai is kept inside in a window that receives a good 6-8 hours of light, does it matter when it’s trimmed like this? I bought it in August, and it flowered in mid October. Mine is more of a common azalea you’d find in the mid eastern US.

Even if it’s indoors. The Bonsai still knows what season it’s in.

Great information. I just wish he's stop saying "Er" so much. Nearly every darn sentence!! So annoying! Otherwise very informative. Cultivate your speaking habits as well as the trees please!
