As you say in your video, the Ad's should always treat you with respect,as they don't know how much cash you have to drop on a timepiece. I got into watches for the respect of the craftsmanship in this throwaway world,, and also the pleasure I. Brings me looking at the small cogs all busy doing what they were intended for. Hundreds of moving parts all with their Jobs to do. It may sound alittle weird of me but when a fellow watch enthusiast notices my watches as being either historical for instance my bulova "moon watch"NOT THE NEW SWATCH PLASTIC TOY" in my semi educated opinion lol. I just love watches for the memories they remind me of and they genuine joy they bring, anyway sorry for going on , here's a 🌷 from the UK to make up for you're bad customer experience lol

You are a hypocrite IMO if after that experience you end up buying a rolex. I was interested in a particular Rolex, now I see the brand as a whore and those who wear the brand as marks. ...No insult intended to whores. Having spent a life by the motto 'turn bad of any sort into good' in this instance it occurred to me that +/- 12 minutes, or more per year was hardly a time piece worthy of the epithet and now, thanks to my horrible rolex experience I have a watch that cost me a similar amount to the rolex I was once upon a time interested in, yet seems too keep time with far greater accuracy. I was told it was designed to be better than +/- 5 seconds per year, but so far it seems to be running around 1 second fast per year. There's a silver lining for you. The finish looks superior too. ...Can you guess what it is yet? A little Aussie Joke for you. ;-)

@@nasseraburashed I'm also a lawyer (not with the ACCC though!). I'm not suggesting you will get preferential treatment but rather, they will have to carefully think about every word they say (or don't say) to you because it is very easy in Australia because the misleading and deceptive conduct prohibitions are very widely interpreted. It is not just limited to conduct that has mislead and deceived, but conduct that is capable of being misleading or deceptive. I think consumers would benefit from a couple of AD's being prosecuted and fined a healthy amount of money.

I came here from part 1. You are right - Rolex created this situation, knowingly, with full knowledge of what they were doing, and as long as people are willing to put up with it they will keep on doing it. If the purchase experience is so bad for the *average* person on the street, imagine how bad the after sales service is in five years when you go to get your watch serviced.

Your approach to watch buying and collecting is spot on; buy what you like and can afford. I had your experience on the Gold Coast during covid, when there were no rich tourists and I thought the Rolex AD might appreciate a sale. Had an ignorant girl who knew nothing about watches. In the end I said “you’re a watch store with no watches, interesting sale’s technique. Which way to the Omega store?”. An hour later I bought an Omega Seamster professional. Fuck ‘em.

good on you for speaking the truth and revealing the current patronising Rolex marketing schtick. I wouldn't even bother with them these days, preferring to remember the days (mid-90's to early 2000's) when you could (and I did) just walk into the AD in Collins St and buy whatever Rolex you wanted, and then, 6-7 years later walk into their Melbourne service centre with a GMT2 bezel issue and have them fix it on the spot, no questions asked. Fuck 'em, spend your money with a company that values you as a customer.

I agree. I've had a similar experience. One AD I visited was awful, he spoke down down to me and told me categorically that I had to buy something else before I'd get a Rolex. Another AD with which I did register for a Rolex were more open, no suggestion of a lead in purchase but over time their story adapts and extends, so their forecasts (not a guarantee I know) are proving inaccurate. The genuine big spenders get the fast track service. And I think that contributes to Rolex ownership being a 'club', not just a watch, and maybe this is why people are willing to part with cash, to be part of the club; status and flexing. I think you've grown your collection correctly, continue to only go for watches and experiences that make you feel good. When the Tudor Black Bay Pro was released I couldn't resist it, I really wanted that watch and thought buying it may help my Rolex case, I phoned the AD, they put me on another list, I thought I'd get one fairly soon but 3 months later there was nothing, I called them and my Rolex wait time had extended again and the Tudor forecast was 12 months! A couple of days later I decided to investigate elsewhere and managed to get a Tudor Black Bay Pro within 24 hours. It's a sensational watch. From that shop I also have managed to buy the brand new Ranger. Great watches, true to my desire and great buying experiences.
@AussieWristWatch

Thanks for the great comments, I really love the Tudor's but in all honesty hadn't really taken note of them until very recently. I don't think for me they are an alternative to a Rolex, but simply an option to add to the collection for what they are on their own - amazing tool watches. Yeah I'm not into all the politics of the Rolex game I guess, but will maintain my good relationship with the lovely AD and see where it goes. If anything, I met a good person.

Ive been trying to purchase a Rolex watch for the past two years without any luck. I went to my local AD 8 months ago and they would not even spend the time to speak to me other than saying “we have nothing” and proceeded to ignore me. However, I just went back there this morning to get my Rolex resized, which I purchased a week ago out of state, and it was a totally different experience. I was treated like royalty! I was given drinks and treats, a Rolex book to take home, and even got my engagement ring and wedding band cleaned complimentary. The SA asked for my contact information and encouraged me to create a wish list that they will help fulfill. What a total BS since I was treated like a peasant just a few months ago.

I'm with you on that. you should be able to try on any piece you'd like and be put on the wait list of the particular piece you want. I had similar experience with one AD where I'm from. They're a private jeweler so they only hold a handful of brands, Rolex, Tudor, Patek, JLC, Panerai. They kind of had the same mindset, but didn't have any models to try on. I tried to build a relationship around the watch hobby, talked at length about Rolex. Bought two Tudor watches on two different trips. asked about the waiting lists for Rolex to added to one, wasn't added because I wasn't one of their "special" clients. recognized the GS on my wrist. From my experience, it just boils down to the AD and even the sales person at that AD. Finding the right AD is just part of the hunt like finding the right watch, it just makes it more fun in my opinion.

The Rolex situation is very frustrating and you are so right about the way we should look at things.. we are customers and we should not have to beg or play games. I've been lucky with AD experiences in Edinburgh, even though they have all said that I can no longer put my name down for sports models. Which is ridiculous....I did buy the 39mm Explorer 3 years ago but returned it.... And then I got slowly pushed towards watches that are more achievable, so I'm waiting for a silver 36mm DateJust.... I also love omega... the older models used to be thinner and had solid casebacks, which I prefer.... take a look at 2254.50 Seamaster... what a stunning watch. I do wish they brought that back with an adjustable clasp and maybe no helium valve Anyway, wishing you all the best and look forward to seeing you get your Sub / GMT! (After the DateJust I think I'll ask for the no date sub....I do love them, but I'd like my first and main watch to be a little classic 36mm.....I have a medium sized man wrist, but I do like watches 36mm-41mm , and love my G shock 5600e, and I did love my Omega Speedmaster 1861 which I had to sell unfortunately)

What the fuck. Build the collection YOU want with any watch YOU want with whatever amount of money YOU can afford. 8:01 am California. I won't play games with my money, but I can afford a high horology watch but to me buying is a silly necessary game. This AD issue has been done in Beverly Hills for years to the point where you walk into a high end shop and all the employees ignore you until you ask for help. Then they say the store down the street fits your style better! They are playing the "exclusivity " game. Some watch lovers go along, more based people shop secondary. You learn a lot more buying secondary about watches and yourself.

Totally agree with your view and point. I recently went into A. Lange & Söhne in Mid-Town NYC, and I made it real clear that I was definitely just looking...but these guys went out of their way to make sure I got to see what I wanted to see, try them on, talk about them, grab a loupe and lust over it. I spent a good hour in there and I felt like a king. That honestly wasnt my expectation, but if I were running a luxury company, I would insist on giving the customer a luxury treatment. I think any dealer who treats you the way you were originally treated should be scolded by the brand, they shouldnt be represented that way. From my own experience there is no list. I have been on the “list” at several ADs and after waiting 2+ years I know I will not get the Rolex I want. They are pre sold to the ADs large spenders. My solution is to buy other brands that want to sell me a watch. I know it’s supply and demand, but the fact is large spending customers buy whatever Rolex they want and flip it. That is how Grey market dealers get their stock and they have plenty of supply.

Great channel! Nice to see a fresh face in this hobby. I feel your pain. I've been to the same Rolex boutique in Sydney four times. It's licenced by the Hourglass. Each of my visits to the store were just as awkward & patronizing. But that doesn't bother me as I know what to expect & I don't take it too seriously. I just like checking out the new models and chatting to the staff. They actually know very little about watches. I end up educating them. At the end of the day, they're just sales people trying to make a living; they're not real watch enthusiasts. The sales people are all given the same training by Rolex. They have to have experience with selling other mid-tier Swiss brands retailed by the Hourglass before they can graduate to selling Rolex. I know this because I've been visiting the other Hourglass store on King Street for more than 10 years & the staff there told me they started off selling Breitling, Longines and Tag Heuer -the 'bread & butter' watches before they were allowed upstairs to sell Patek, Vacheron & Rolex brands. Occasionally you get lucky with someone who has a bit of a friendlier personality but usually you get the same cold treatment. Apparently, Melbourne has friendlier staff than Sydney, which doesn't Surprise me as Sydney was just recently voted as the third most unfriendly city in the World, just a whisker infront of Denmark & Sweden as having cities with the least friendliest people. On my last visit to the boutique, I saw a pile of Rolex catalogues and asked for one. I was told 'No. Sorry, they're for our customers'. I had to laugh. How the fuck do I become a customer if you won't sell me a watch? Although, many collectors are put off by this kind of mistreatment, I am still a Rolex fanboy. Don't let the hype and the snobbery of the brand deter you from your ambition to own one if that's what you want. I've collected watches for 20 years. I've owned many other brands but at the end of the day you should buy what you actually want. Not what other people think is a better brand or value for money. For example I once bought a Speedmaster moon watch because everyone was hyping it to be a 'must have' in your collection piece. But after a few months I sold mine as it was not my style and the non water resistance wasn't suited to my beach lifestyle. Eventually I sold most of my watches and consolidated to collect only Rolex. I now own 7 of them. None are bought from an AD. I only collect neo-vintage pre-ceramic Rolexes from 1990s through the mid 2000s. I think these are the sweet spot in Rolex buying. Some are still available at reasonable prices & to me they represent the real tool watches that Rolex built their reputation on before they became fashion accessories. I grew up reading National Geographic magazines and when I first saw the Rolex ads in them, I aspired to own one. To me they represent success, passion and professionalism.

@@AussieWristWatchJust watched all your videos & subscribed to the channel. It's great you're getting into all different brands. You have a passion at first. Eventually, you'll have amassed a collection when you will come to a decision of passion versus investment. For me, that balance was found in Rolex. Love or hate the brand, it's the most recognized in the world such that you can literally use a Rolex as hard currency even in a third world country. In fact, if you offered me US$ or an equivalent value Rolex as payment, I would take the genuine Rolex. The Rolex has historically appreciated in value over time. Whereas the value of the dollar is worth less due to inflation and being over-printed it's real value is not worth the paper its printed on. As for buying a neo-vintage Rolex, look at a no-date Sub or a 40mm Sea-Dweller. At least, once you've acquired your first Rolex you can always trade it later to upgrade without losing money. Once you buy your first Rolex (stainless steel sports), it will hopefully continue to appreciate whilst you wear it for a few years. Then you can decide whether to trade or sell it to upgrade. Not much different to buying real estate. It's a matter of getting into the market. That's my strategy and how I ended up with 7 Rolexes. I've lost money on most of my trades except Rolex. It's the only brand I've never lost money on. My first Rolex was a 40mm polar Explorer II. I bought it for A$6000 about 3 years ago. It's now roughly doubled in value. It was initially a purchase of convenience as I found it by accident. It wasn't the Magnum P.I. Pepsi I wanted but eventually I learned to appreciate it more than the GMT, as I realised it's the same model worn by mountain climber Ed Viesturs, who summited 14 of the highest mountain peaks wearing it and was also worn by Norwegian explorer, Erling Kagge who was the first person to reach the north and south poles by foot and has also summited Everest with the same Rolex. Therefore that Rolex reference 16570 has probably achieved more feats than any other sports Rolex.

Maybe I have a comment here which may read strange. I was once working as a banker (behind the counter). People came to me in the bank and asked for 50 bucks or came along to put a few 100 or maybe 1000 bucks on a savings account. Sometimes I also changed money (like for people visiting Italy, Spain, Greece... you name it - before the Euro showed up all of them had their own money) or people asked to change money to gold, silver or other precious metal. I was very new to this particular branch bank and remember a day when an old lady walked in which I had not seen before, which was not that unusual (given I was quite new there). She did not look wealthy, for sure not rich. In the opposite she looked rather poor (like a worn, patched coat which looked like 15 or 20 years old at that point of time already and it looked like even this coat already has seen a lot of "history"). This old lady walked straight accross the room directly to my counter. She said something like "My dear young man" (I was kindof young that time) "I really dont know what to do. I cannot spend any more money to my savings account." I told her "Dear madam, it is not necessary that you spend money which you may need otherwise" (this was not my first sentence I told her, I just want to speed up here a little bit). Some people would have taken this as an offensive comment for sure (which was definitely not intended by me). But in contrast, she seemed to be somehow relieved even. She opened her bag (which did not look much better than her coat), grabbed the savings bank book out and passed it on to me. She said "Well then, I am sure this will be the last time for at least two or three months until I will come back. Please put the money [it was in the savings bank book] on the account." I was really surprised when I opened the savings bank book and saw the ammount this lady acquired over the last years. She was not really a millionaire, but what-the-heck(?!?!) she was not too far away from a million. I tried not to show my surprise and just did as requested. The lady checked the booking, smiled, put her savings bank book away in her bag, said good bye and went away. I saw her once every three months. And she always told me the same (maybe she forgot that she told me already earlier and did not recognize me?), did the same. This really told me an important lesson - Dont judge a book by its cover. This lady did not look like a lot, still she did very well obviously. She did obviously not dissipate her money to luxury and managed to stay a friendly, grounded lady. Later on I found out, that she had a little farm outside the little town I lived that days. Not sure how you can add up that much money, even if you do this for a lifetime from this (very tiny!) farm business... maybe she grew special plants? Just kidding... Also not sure if she had a plan, did this for somebody else or simply did it to be able to spend a little bit more to the savings... but I really was impressed. About RLX: I would like to have an Explorer 1... but I am not willing to pay any price. I assume this winter has everything (Pandemic, Supply shortages, sick people, war, energy scarcity... you name it) to bring down prices of "luxury" assets to a level it may be interesting for me again. I do not have any connections (other than an online AD, which is not licensed for RLX), so I guess I would have to buy a used one. We have a RLX AD here in town but I already heared from a relative of mine that they are treating you EXACTLY as you described (bad experience). So I dont even try to go there to check out. Also, there are other brands and makes I like. Tudor BB Ceramic or OMEGA Moonwatch for example. And as we all know... there will always be another watch. And maybe it will be my RLX Explorer at some time. If this time may not come (because I am too stubborn on the price I am willing to pay)... well... I will deal with it. Because for 90% of people around the big blue globe it would be a very nice problem to have. We should keep in mind: We are already blessed. Stay safe, stay healthy!

Great to see a new channel in Australia, all success to you . This is always an interesting topic. I live in Melb and have a great Rolex AD (WOS) my first purchase 2 yrs ago was a Sea Dweller, followed by a Sky Dweller, and the a Solid White Gold Daytona. I started with no prior purchase history and was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. The VC boutique in Melb is also wonderful ( Overseas Chronograph with blue dial). I just laugh at the way some AD's treat people including me. There are 2 Rolex AD's that I can't even get in the door - they won't talk me , "appt only, you need to book online appt". And then sorry we are busy today etc etc. The other one is a big intl AD - has never called me after putting my name down 5 yrs ago. Went to Franck Muller AD a couple of months ago, had to answer 10 questions to even get in the door, then when once inside the staff all walked to the rear and ignored me - not one person spoke to me, so I left (there was no one else in the shop). My advice, enjoy the experiences good and bad, stick firm on the watches you want, and you can get them. I love watches and many brands including Rolex, please don't start hating Rolex, it's the AD/Sales person that is the problem not the watch.

I 100% agree with your views! IF an authorised dealer sold me the watch I wanted, there would be a very good chance that I'd come back as a return customer! IF an authorised dealer tries to gouge me and force me to buy watches that I don't want, before 'allowing' me to go onto their 'list', then there is NO chance that I'll ever step foot in that store again! THEIR job is to sell watches, not to pass them onto me to sell (potentially at a loss) just to get the watch I want!

Hi AWW. Thanks for the time you take to share your experiences with us. Dealing with Rolex AD’s is as I found out, first hand, not just time consuming and would eventually eat into a large sum of your funds, but is also nerve wrecking and very uncomfortable. You’ll be tested, trust me ma’am. My first few visits to the two AD’s in Bahrain a few years ago were dreadful experiences so I had no choice but to either pay significantly more in the grey market or play the ‘games’, at least on my own terms. Four Tudors, five steal sports Rolexes and three year later I am now waiting for that ‘Pepsi’ call. Mind you, I still consider myself lucky as I ended up buying pieces that I really appreciate and love wearing. Problem is, you be sure that for every Pepsi or Batman there would be some 10-20 genuine watch/brand loving people with the money who are ready like you to buy it, another 500 who’d love to buy that piece but don’t have the money to do so and about 10,000 people who’ll buy it just to flip it and make some money. It’s just the way it is, not in any way because these are the best watches out there. That’s just how Rolex steal sports/professional watches are in demand. Good luck hunting.

I am of two minds on this. First, I agree that having to buy a watch just to get on the list for another watch is BS. Conversely, I can understand how an AD would want to save a really hot watch for a valued customer. How to resolve this? I think the AD should just be upfront about how it operates. Then the customer can decide how to proceed. Of course, this is easy for me because there is no Rolex in the current catalog that I want. And there are many other interesting watches that I do want. BTW - I wandered into the Lange boutique in NYC just before COVID in the hopes of seeing an Odysseus. I was upfront about the fact I could not buy anything they had. But the salesman was wonderful. He let me try on all the watches I wanted. The Datagraph in platinum is hard to beat.

I am still hunting for my first luxuary watch.. i Ever since I was a child I would look at a Rolex store and stare in awe and admiration for what the brand represented in terms of wealth, stature, heritage When I walked into a Rolex store thinking I wanted a luxuary watch I was surprised to know there was a waiting list . I have searched several places and learnt about this shortage situation. On the other hand I walked into an omega and learnt you can buy one straight away incl iconic Speedmaster. My current state of mind is, naively is waiting for a Rolex call one day. Is Rolex the best watch out there ? No Is Rolex the most historical watch? No Is Rolex in the holy trinity ? No Are there watches cheaper and better than Rolex ? Yes Is Rolex unnecessarily overhyped ? Yes So I keep asking myself why am I still willing to wait for a Rolex I feel Rolex achieves a blend of many of the elements history, marketing, quality, brand and not achieving the heights of being the best yet the one that is the top after conmbining all the elements Plus it’s that little child in me staring outside that Rolex store aspiring to be able to afford one

Great channel, conversation, and your pursuit of happiness! Magnum PI and ‘old school mens magazines also fed my pursuit of steel sports, Pepsi etc. 2 brands to stuff up in this online lockdown frenzy period are Rolex and MoonSwatch. My Rant: I’ve enjoyed Watch shopping worldwide, and the education attained from this for 45 plus years. As I’ve discovered a watch I love & can afford, generally I’ve purchased from a store & enjoyed the Service, sellers product knowledge and passion, and the marketing frills attached like catalogues, accessories. I still have those watches, accessories and memories of those events. I’ve ventured online while lockdowns were a thing, buying micro brands and limited editions, and pre-owned and vintage. Recently visited my local Omega boutique reopened after 2 years lockdown, really excited for a new addition, but walked out deflated and will never buy from them… ever. The service was friendly, I was the only one there, I could look a certain watches, the ‘moon watch’ couldn’t/ wouldn’t be shown and I’d have to go on a wait list for approx 18 months. I foresee this ‘exclusivity’ / domino buying history theory reducing retail AD’s, with sales focused online even more. Swatch made a huge stuff-up with the MoonSwatch, made the world excited, fed an entry drug watch to new watch lovers, then said you can only have it infrequently from a random boutique. They’ve lost brand loyalty and market share for this decade.

It is definitely annoying but it's likely no on getting those watches when you walk in the first time, except the sub on occasionally. It is what it is. The subs little easy as they share the same movement with the datejust. Rolex makes those movements a lot as a result of the demand on the sub and the datejust. There is a lot of bullshit involved with trying to get a Professional line Rolex from an AD; hopefully the expectation of recent years in needing to “build a relationship” or “go on a journey” at an AD is beginning to come to an end. This is a worldwide problem, but especially bad here in Australia, where it is tough to get even the broadly disliked Milgauss or Air-King (which I personally like). Your Panerai looks great. I can’t obtain a Sub, but am more than happy with a blue Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight, a watch now easily available from Aussie ADs and one to love. Just some thoughts, Rolex did not create this shortage. Well, if you want to say it was because of Rolex releasing the Daytona LN in 2016 that supposedly started the speculation that quickly spread to all other models then okay, I guess they did but I wouldn’t think any entity could have possibly saw that coming. So by in large demand is many many times more than what Rolex can make, as a valuable luxury brand it’s taken them more than 100 years to build and by increasing supply to meet demand would be a short sighted decision that could significantly damage the brand’s long term equity. That is also assuming they can, as much as people think Rolex is machine made, it really isn’t all automated and it requires watchmakers, even if infrastructure isn’t an issue, there are only so many watchmakers qualified. Keep in mind this isn’t tech where people are rushing into the profession, I reckon fewer and fewer people grow up wanting to be watchmakers as older ones retire. When you have 1000 people asking you for one watch I don’t blame them for maximizing their revenue in the process. Revenue is after all important, after 2 or 3 watches they get to know you better especially when you keep visiting them wearing those watches they will become comfortable with you. You need to understand probably 90% of people that walk in for the first time are just trying to make a quick buck and they need to screen them out. Even if they sell to the right people and their end game is a GMT Master II, then it becomes a one and done, you will never see that customer in the store again and that’s just not a good business model. They want to retain you as a customer for life and know you are open to buy other models.
@AussieWristWatch
2 жыл бұрын
Some interesting thoughts. I don't necessarily agree with the argument that in order to maintain repeat business as their basis they do this. What other watch brand does that and I am sure their model like all sales models would consider and seek retention and repeat buyers, but they do it the old fashioned way - through innovative product development and good customer service.
@garretthu2466

@@AussieWristWatch I absolutely agree, no one else does this. But because no one else is in that position and I will wager every watch company wants to have that problem where every watch they make will sell itself in days if not within hours. We need to also understand Rolex simply does what it has always done, all customer interactions are handled by its dealer network. Rolex doesn’t own any Boutiques except for one in Geneva I think. With that, it really isn’t the fault of Rolex how it’s handled. So how did Rolex become so successful outside of the being the best marketing machine? They have one very strategic advantage that no other watch company can ever achieve; and that is Rolex is a non profit, managed by a foundation and not driven by hitting sales targets, no YoY growth, no stock holders to answer to and no pressure to continuously revise a product just to boost short term sales. They do what is best for the brand and if lowering production (not saying they do) and making no money for the next 5 years to ensure it’s brand equity for the next 50 years they can do that. No other for profit company will ever allow that to happen.

I said there is no way I can afford this brand anymore, all mine are over 20 years old. £10,700 for a new Dweller.......it's a steel sports watch!......that's all......it;s not Patek. He still pushed for me to go on the list. I paid the service price, winced, and left.

Agree Sub (have one in the vault), Batman and the other drink Coke are my choices. No don't think you'll save on the grey market. Well at least here in the US

Sure, I meant just spend all the money on one watch on the Grey rather than multiple watches you may not want in store, just to get the one you want. If you want them all, then I think the AD system works well.

The watch world is gone absolutely crazy. Especially Rolex. I’ve always liked Rolex since I saw James Bond wearing one when I was a kid. I’ve always been into watches since. Bought an omega seamaster years ago, I still have it. Before all this craziness started I walked into an AD & bought a new submariner date and even got a €400 discount!! This was in 2013. Lucky enough to get a silver dial datejust 41mm at list in the same store after about an eight week wait. Previous I’d put my name on a list for a another submariner date/non date and about a year and a half in I enquired just to see if I was any closer up the list and was told that because Rolex had changed the submariner from the maxi case and it now had a new movement, it therefore was a new watch and I would have to put my name down again and start the whole process again! Negating my previous one and a half year wait 🤯 Now I know I’m am extremely lucky to already own two Rolex watches but the idea is to be able to pass on one to each of my children when the time comes. (Hopefully not for a long time yet)! But basically yes, the whole watch market is a game and a very frustrating one.

How awesome buying back then, I still only loved watches back then but any expensive watch was still a pipe dream. The lists are funny, I am under zero illusions about how they work - meaning it’s up to ever AD to do what they want and arbitrarily choose. Thanks for watching, stick around for me chit chat.
