No surprise that he went continuously 1955 to 1989. Repeats are still playing and still being enjoyed by the young and old. Talent like this only comes along once in a generation. Marx Brothers, Charlie Chaplin, Goons, Monty Python... Benny Hill was a comedic genius.

@ Matthew Gombos Ironic, isn’t it. An age that considers and touts itself as the most free thinking and progressive age ever turns out to be the most stifling and censorious age ever by comparison. We’d probably ‘progress’ and fair much better if we could go back in time. We’d certainly learn a lot from the likes of the great Benny Hill.

@Mark Lanton many of them did not like the fact that Benny did so well with the new medium: t.v. They were envious of the success he had so quickly when a lot of them had to perform live in theaters, on the radio, they did not trust television the way Benny did. Benny had the perfect face for television, in theaters his comedy could not work because he could not use his expressions, his funny looks, like he did on t.v., plus Benny was a writer not a real comedian like Bob Monkhouse, Tommy Cooper, Frankie Howerd, etc...He bombed a few times in the beginning of his career on stage, first his voice was not strong enough and tend to be high pitch, he was very nervous and by the age of 25 he had bleeding ulcers, he was not known to be good comic in front of a live audience. So, when t.v. came he grab it and history was made. He was known to be a recluse, a loner, he actually liked his own company, he then had time alone to write his scripts, sketches, songs, he was the sole writer in his comedy show, so basically he was really working hard all the time to make a success of his comedy show. He did not do well with people unless it was his entourage, he had a fear of disappointing people because of his lack of education and accent. So, he did not have many friends and the ones he had did not know the real Alfred Hawthorne Hill, like us really.

@Roci Stone I don't know if he did but in some of his later scripts and sketches(1977 and +) he does make a reference to it. One of those is a sketch where he speaks about a water detergent and he slaps the washing machine and of course when he gets to the end (4 machines) one of the girls moves in front of him and he gives her a big slap on the bottom, she turns around and give him a wallops across the face and tells the director that she is fed up of him always finding a way to hit her bottom and that she will mention this to the Equity and walks out and you see Benny holding his cheek and saying well I did not know she was going to move and that is wasn't really his fault, and on another sketch, real human playing dolls stop dancing or moving because the battery when out, so Benny disguise has an old man comes to one of the dolls from behind and giving us the impression he will take her by the back...she tenses up and when he grabs her by the waist she turns around and starts hitting him and accusing him of sexual harassment and tells him she will make a complaint to the Equity Act. Same sketch but this time it is Benny who is a toy soldier and Bob Todd disguise has an old man grabs Benny by the back, Benny then turns around push off Bob and call’s him a pouf (homosexual) in french. Another sketch, Benny is disguised has the king of England and comes on to Jenny Lee Wright and he really really tries to kiss her, she pushes him off and then finally gets mad and tells him: Benny Hill stop harassing me I will tell on you to Philip and she walks off the stage, Now, was Benny sending us a message about his work environment like: hey even if I try somethings on the girls I work with they will have the better hand anytime.

@@labellaescrima1996 Thank you so much for your wonderful reply! I don't think Benny was any sort of Letcher or had anything like that at heart. It was him playing someone that the "average person" would expect to see in that situation because it was funny. It was a throwback to vaudeville in America and the old fashioned live theatre entertainment that is part of the tradition in the UK. I have spoken to many people about Benny over the years, and other than his slightly self-indulgent streak, I never heard anyone who performed with him say so much as a cross word. He was wonderful and made even more so by the people who performed with him, including yourself and the other ladies who helped him "put over" so many wonderful bits of comedy thru the years. I still weep all these years later that he would never get a second look today, and that toward the end of his career and his life, he was treated so badly. I laugh myself to tears watching him and all of you, and a few of those tears are for what might have been if he had been treated better and looked after himself better as well. His comedy lives with the same energy all these years later, when other "stars" of more modern comedy have faded. Thank you once again for your reply, and a tip o' me topper to you and everyone lucky enough to remember our Benny!

The Whicker parody and the sketch beginning around 29:00 were from April 20, 1968, and the "Laddyboys" sketch was from January 1966. The rest were '65. It's things like these that made his 1980's shows' descent into a de facto Playboy magazine of the air (replete with T&A displays) - and his shows looking more and more like they were made on the way to the men's room - all the more pathetic. Unlike the British elites, though, I am not of the "cancel culture" of which the witch-hunt against him in his last decade on the air was an unfortunate forerunner.

@@talcumpowder1000 - What happened by the end for Hill, besides the aging/weight gain factor, was that the repetition of gags, gestures, etc., had become increasingly rote, formulaic, been there/done that, running on fumes, operating on autopilot, and mailing/phoning it in; with the level of acting more calculated/contrived/robotic and less organic/spontaneous. This affliction marred the works of other comedians and/or personalities towards the end of their TV careers - notably Jackie Gleason after he moved from New York to Miami Beach in 1964, and up to his show's cancellation in 1970; Lucille Ball, with every successive sitcom from "The Lucy Show" onwards (and downward trends in their syndication in relation to her "I Love Lucy"); Dean Martin, after divorcing his second wife Jeannie in 1970; Red Skelton, in his last years on weekly network TV; and Bob Hope in his last two decades of TV specials (to his very last in 1996).
