Thank you-that’s a good question! And you can, but PVA will leave shiny spots and smudges on the cloth, and white glue leaves milky flakes and smudges where it gets on the cloth, which looks messy and won’t come off. The flour or starch paste can be rubbed off when it dries on the cloth. If you do use white glue or PVA and decide you don’t like the blemishes left by the glue, you can paint the cloth with acrylic matte or semi gloss or gloss medium or varnish, but this does change the surface of the cloth to an acrylic surface.

Thank you for the tutorial. This method looks good. I use fusible interfacing and sometimes I get wrinkles. I'm going to give this a try. Is that copy paper you're using?

Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful :) Your process of using fusible interfacing sounds interesting, too! In this demonstration, copier paper is used. For larger sheets of bookcloth, you can use any thin, sturdy paper, such as various printmaking papers.

Thank you for the tutorial. Is there any other adhesive that would work for this?

Thanks for your question, Lisa! The handmade tapioca starch or rice or wheat paste works best, but you can use any adhesive, like PVA or white glue. However, if you do use something different, like PVA or white glue, it might not be considered "archival" because they might not last over time, and they also might have acids in them, so check on that if you want to make a book that you plan to keep for generations (like a family photo album, etc.). Also, when using other types of glue, if you get the glue on the cloth, it can leave permanent little spots of shiny areas, while the starch or flour glue can be flaked off if you get some on the cloth. I hope that helps, and have fun making some bookcloth!!
