BOOK REVIEW: The Girl Who Could See • A magical realism novella by Kara Swanson
Audience: YA
Genre: magical realism, contemporary, a bit of a thriller
Everyone thinks Fern is insane. She claims to be see a different world and says that a boy that lives in that world talks to her. Fern tries to push away that imaginary world and imaginary person like everyone tells her to, but the worlds began to collide in ways that she no longer can ignore.
Negative
The book is written in the trendy YA style with many sentence fragments, which can be confusing, and sometimes they were in this book. Sometimes the scenes weren't fully clear, and that was important in this book.
Positives
I like pretty much everything else.
I love that the cover doesn't seem to contain much, but when I started reading, I started seeing much more in it.
I enjoyed the main characters. They were believable and likable. Fern head flaws but grew much during the story.
The plot was really cool and intriguing. This is one of those stories that ignites the imagination and has enough hidden that you want to keep reading as fast as you can.
The themes and messages were relevant and important.
Overall: Deep, fast-paced, unique, intriguing, and really enjoyable!
