Hi'a Alexa, I'm in a first draft right now and although I've been writing since I was little I have yet to complete a novel. I determined to do it. Thank-you for this nice refresher and the reminder of your intro to story beats. Your perspective is super helpful to me as I think I tend to be more of a pantser too, so seeing how you keep the story beats in mind, but give yourself the freedom to decide them as you go. So I will go all out! trying to get 600-1k words in the work days, and at Saturday, which is my day off, I will push myself to write 2-3k words, since math is not in my favor T^T And good luck everyone!

I actually didn't know I was a pantser before I actually started writing. But what I did know was that I had had many ideas for stories, but never actually wrote them. Why? Because I was scared. I had heard I had to know what was gonna happen, know the beginning, the end, and all the important bits in between. But I didn't know. So I never wrote because I was sure I'd fail. Then one day (this February) I just sat down and wrote anyway. And I found out that the parts I hadn't planned, were the best ones! :) Deadlines are killers for me! I don't get motivated by them, and I'm already motivated to write. A deadline will only add needless stress for me, and make the writing process less enjoyable.

I lean towards outlining but can at certain points "fly by the seat of my pants". Outlining helps keep me moving forward faster so that I'm not constantly looking back even through the first draft for continuity purposes and it helps me know where my characters are and what they should be doing for each chapter. Within chapters once the actual writing starts I suppose you can say I start flying by the seat of my pants. Fir example in my current book I had expected according to my outline to introduce a character around chapter 6 or 7. The midway point. This will be a series and this character will play a major role perhaps the second most important role once introduced. I've written them in to chapter 2 lol. They will return again in chapter 5 or 6. And from there be a mainstay in most chapters. As I was writing this particular character became a character that was essentially going to be a throw away character. Someone to introduce a new layer of the primary protagonist well they are currently a protagonist they will eventually become more of a mixture of protagonist and antagonist depending on the readers perception. All those around the main character that support them except one or 2 can be viewed as both. Even the villains most have some classical protagonists traits. There will also be villains that are essentially pure villains meaning really no redeemable qualities for most people I would imagine. But even then one of those pure villains has layers and reasons why albeit questionable reasons why they do the things they do. I presume most wont accept those reasons as valid for their actions. All my characters are multilayered as is all of humanity.

Question for you. I have had a story in my mind for many years now. There's many characters that have become so real to me. I believe it's eating me from the inside out because I can't share it with anyone. I want to be able to read and write well but it takes me so long to read anything and even longer to write sentences. It has always caused me problems. I don't think I'm stupid but I know that something is wrong with me in that sense. So my question is do I need to let someone else write it as I think it so it can be understandable to everyone else? Is that cheating myself? I have a problem I must adapt and overcome.

Hey Alexa, one question that's been bugging me is about how long would a reasonable planning /outling of a novel take? I orignally thought 2 weeks would be enough to plan my second draft, but I am drawing to a close on the last week, and I find I still have questions about the outline / the road map of what's to happen. I wanted to hit this deadline and start running, but now im wondering if it was perhaps too ambitious? I know its different for everyone. But do you have any thoughts?

Hi, Alexa! I just came across your channel and find all the information and advice you give very helpful. I just recently started writing again and have an idea of what I want to write, but my main problem is dialogue grammar. I want it to be able to suck readers in to the point of where they want more. I've done research on proper dialogue, but keep getting myself confused by what I read. My uncle, also a writer, recommended that using an outline helps majorly, but that I that it wasn't necessary. I am also like you when it comes to not doing outlines. I keep trying to revise what I've written so far. So I am now feeling lost. Could you possibly direct me in the right direction? I have issues with dialogue grammar and tags... I've watched your videos, but I've read different things on multiple websites. Please help! :(

How do you create a habit when you have no habits? Any tips? I have never held onto a single habit in my life. Not even smoking. I do what I feel like, when I feel like it. I eat when I feel like it, not when I'm hungry or at a specific time. I sleep when I feel like it, and for how long I feel like. (Unless I have classes or appointments I care enough about to get up for.) So I wake up at ANY random time a day. Or night. And sleep a random number of hours. (Usually anything from 4 to 11 hours....or stay up 2-3 days in a row.) I smoke when I feel like it, even to the point of Constantine's 80 a day for weeks, months or years in a row, then drop it at the tip of a hat because I suddenly don't feel like it...for every bit as random amount of time. And I also have only one small room that is my bedroom, living room and kitchen... very little office-space options there. Do you have any good tips on how I can manage to write more consistently? I have no problems writing 5000 words in one go (which is the size of my average fanfic chapter), but I rarely do that tho. lol More like around 1000....or just 2. Again... random. I really struggle to figure out a way to get myself to write more often, but I have never done a thing I don't want in my life, and it's harder than it sounds to suddenly start. Oh, yes... And my motivation is mainly that I write because I want to read the thing I am writing, but I can't find it written anywhere. And since nobody else will, I guess I have to write it myself. Which is about as much motivation I ever get. I live in a state of constant Ennui, with a tragically Nihilistic world view. Believe me... viewing ANYTHING as important is pretty difficult when there's no point in anything, because eventually, you'll die, and whatever you create will vanish anyway at some point or other. And if everything is futile anyway, why do anything? It's difficult to find motivation when the only thing of value is that which lasts eternally, and everything in this world is transient, and will vanish on a long enough timeline. A good habit would be by far superior to any kind of meager motivation I can think up. Still... I really want to do this, because my book idea won't stop nagging me until I write it. It's been there for years, and it keeps getting more and more detailed...but not written. >>

Keep something in mind. Some things do last. People are still reading the Illiad and the Odyssey, written like a thousand years ago. (I don't know the actual time off hand) Books written a hundred years ago are also still in print. And there is also something to be said for doing things you enjoy that make you happy. And there's always lots you can do to make other people happy that makes a difference. Take a homeless perisn to lunch. Shovel the snow from an elderly person's walkway. These things can make all the difference in the world to the other person. And they often bring happiness to you. You feel good helping someone else out. Whether there's something after death or not, what you do when you're here can matter. You simply have to decide that you will make your life matter.

@@infernalfemme The ONLY thing I get from helping people is a strong sense of irritation with myself for doing so. I'd rather make them miserable, which at least would give me a sense of achieve ment and/or amusement. Luckily for the world, I am far too lazy and completely lack ambition, so my impact on the world remains -non existent. You really should not assume that just because something make you feel good, it makes everyone else feel the same way you do. People are different after all. I am a bit unsure what that has to do with developing good writing-habits tho... oO

No offence but how does one pants? Is it extra work for you because I can only imagine what happens if you write a scene you later decide to delete?

I mean, all writers, whether they outline or pants, end up deleting scenes later on. In revision, you always end up deleting/rewriting/changing things. For me, I start off with a general sense of the character arc and key plot points, especially up to the mid-point turn. I have a few big scenes in mind. And that's all I need to write--I explore and develop the character and plot as I go, and I find that exciting. I'll try to make a video on my writing process!
