I can't believe it's been 5 years since I've bound my first coptic stitch notebook! During the last couple of years, there have definitely been some on and off bookbinding periods. But, once we were all in isolation, I feel back in love with the hobby. How long have you been bookbinding for? Do you have any tips or tricks for myself and fellow bookbinders?

I think I first started looking into bookbinding as a retirement hobby about 5 years ago as well thanks to Sea Lemon. Since then I've progressed VERY slowly but that's fine - I do it for fun and relaxation. I've sort of decided that I want to make a massive tome of a book that looks as if it was made in medieval times so I've got a seriously long way to go! A really good source of instruction/reference that I've found is the DAS Bookbinding channel from Australia. He covers everything in great detail and also explains the history behind a lot of the various parts. Another good one is Four Keys Book Arts (from Canada I think). A handy tip I got from DAS is to put a piece of corrugated cardboard under your signatures when piercing them - makes it a lot easier. A nice source of some 'historical' info on the subject is Project Gutenberg. They have a fair few books on it that you can read online or download for free (all the books there are public domain in USA).

Since it has been a whole year you've probably learned a better elastic attachment, I sure hope so because the binding work was so lovely and perfect and the gouging into that cover after the whole thing was completed almost seemed like a cruel attack on the beautiful book. I believe someone mentions embedding the elastic ends into the boards before covering to conceal any rough edges and I'm sure that will give it the polished finish it deserves.

I'm making my second coptic stitch book so this is incredibly helpful! If it's helpful to you, I prefer that you speed through the more tedious parts. Show a few examples then show what it should look like when finished. I love meditative tedious tasks, but not watching others do them.

You are certainly a master at the stitching! Yes, I would really benefit from seeing the stitching process step by step. Many tutorials are done with such speed that I miss the details of where the needle is supposed to go!! Or the filming is not close enuf to see the details. Thanks!

I just came across your channel and so glad I did! Your video's are awesome thank you for sharing. I've been dabbling in bookbinding ( which I'm in love ❤️ with but a zillion tutorial video's out there I can't seem to find a tutorial that breaks down step-by-step instructions on how to sew Coptic stitching. Could you purty paleez make a video pertaining to the above? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Gina Barber

This is so encouraging! I always pride myself in being able to - sometimes arrogantly - follow instructions and coming out with a good result with certain things (which has inflated my ego over the years). Struggling with a craft that takes a lot of practice is humbling and challenging! I want to get better. This is such a beautiful book.

I'm so glad you found the video encouraging! It takes a lot of self-reflection to be honest about what you are and aren't capable of. I definitely have felt the same way! But, it sounds like you're on your way to challenging yourself and improving! 🤗 Thank you so much for commenting! 💕

I use the pointy end of a nail tool to jam the elastic through the book cover. 🤷🏽♀️ I don’t think there is a graceful way to do this. Just use what works for u. Lol

I've never seen a bookbinding glow up before. I like the entire process but I also like just the stitching because I'm mesmerized by the thread lol Instead of attaching the elastic to the book, you could always sew a little notebook pencil pouch for them. It's just a small pencil pouch on a piece of elastic but you can use it on any notebook since it's not attached. Also, hi, I've been binding books all day instead of making 3D art 😂

LOL! I love "bookbinding glow up"! 🤣 Yes, I love the idea of a notebook pencil pouch! 😍 I find it so tricky to add elastics to books, but I wanted to make sure the remake was as close as I could make it to the original. Also, I love that you're bookbinding!!! 😍😆

I would like to see that french thing part. It's interesting! Also.. Maybe you could also upload the full length of the bindings. that way, we can take a further look into the process if we feel the need. That is, if you let us! >_

Love seeing the progress you made! For the elastic, I like to attach it before adding paper to the interior of the covers. I cut channels into the book board so the elastic will sit in them instead of being so far above it, and the interior paper covers it up and keeps everything nice and secure. I'm better with the sewing/construction part of bookbinding than the paper part; I still have trouble determining which direction the grain is going!

I've been fascinated with coptic bookbinding recently and was wondering what size thread was used in your video I'm using waxed linen thread .50 and it seems to be on the thinner side, maybe better suited for case binding? Loved your newest creation, thanks for sharing.
@NubbyNotes

The thread that I use now is about 1mm in diameter. I like how chunky it is. XD In my experience, it's really nice to work with. But, I definitely agree with you. I think the thinner waxed threads are better suited for case binding while the chunkier threads look really nice with the exposed binding. But, it really is all up to personal preference! :) Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
