Everyone is nice to me, except for when I was in the Dope scene from 2008-2010. I met a lot of personalities that were controlled by the dope. The dope fiend larceny was not needed. How come I held down my union construction job and a car and a one bedroom loft apartment downtown? I knew my limits, and when I ran out of money after my rent was paid, then I did not get high and it sucked more than anything else in the world but I went through the ups and downs so many times, so why couldn’t everybody else do it? I’m no better than anyone and I’m 43 and I still smoke cigarettes and I can’t stop drinking alcohol. So I understand addictions but I just never wanted to be homeless and yes, the high from real heroin was awesome, but I seen and knew homeless people and I knew I couldn’t handle that life. I’d rather be in prison than living on the streets without a job, car, a job and addicted to drugs.

Old school bookies used flash paper to put bets on, if you got raided, you would dump the paperwork into a water bin sitting next to the desk which made the paperwork melt, and the best thing is rent 2 houses or 2 apartments next to each other, drill small holes in walls and run phone cords next door, if they went to bust the place, they would bust the place with the phone lines hooked up but you would be in the address next door or above apartment. You cut the phone lines and pull the cords through the wall holes. Dont ask me how I know :)

Lol. Me too. I used to work at Salvatore's up on Boston Rd. (I think) near the Eastfield Mall. Some funny things about that place: 1. there was a poker table in the basement that was always covered with empty baggie corners. 2. Got violently ill on a staff meal. I guess it was a good way to get rid of old fish. 3. Got "fired" one night by some old greaseball who chewed me out for setting a table with a placemat that had a stain. (Wasn't actually fired.) 4. A big part of my job back then in the late 80's was running to the store many times a night to turn in and buy lottery tickets. Lol

I knew a guy from the 70s in Providence, RI, named “Chick”, he was an old Italian guy. (Like most of the people from my neighborhood. This guy mentioned Providence, so he would know the importance that Federal Hill played from the 40s to the 80s. The head of the New England Crime Family had his headquarters on Federal Hill, (Little Italy) in a little building called National Cigarette Vending Company, which was his front business. He also supplied cigarette and pinball machines throughout New England. Raymond “The Man” Patriarca was a very powerful, respected, (FEARED!) man from the bootlegging days, and at one point in the late 50s to the 60s, he would be called in to settle disputes between the 5 families in New York. He died of a heart attack in 1984, but his story is worth researching, he took out many people who crossed him! There are lots of great books with his history in them and they are worth the read if you like Mafia history! “Boston Mob” is one great book that “The Last Good Heist” is another one! Also “What Price Providence” about the life of “The Frenchman” Gerard Quimette, who ran a crew for Patriarca and “Choices, You Make ‘Em’ You own Em’” by Gerald Tillinghast, who was an enforcer for Patriarca Family and part of The Frenchman’s crew!

You'll even meet a lot of those guys, who are down to earth as crazy as that sounds. A lot of us had family that were part of that kinda life, and parents that wanted everything correct and honest, than people who romanticized the life. Good Luck Chicky, thanks. Rimani benedetto.

Much respect to you Ian for bringing guys on here to tell their stories and teach these youngsters that the life of crime is not the way to go. I know personally, 13yrs in prison and county, I wish that when I was younger they had platforms like yours, and Chad Marks, to show me that there's a better way to go in life, bcus there's no happy ending in the GAME.... Great interview with a very likeable guy. I like that he lived by rules of respect and taking care of people in need. When you look at it, being a bookie may be illegal, but what is the difference between what he did and what casinos and off-track betting business do every day? With all of the good times and parties, he still lost some good friends and associates.
