Bookmaker Toast Recipe for Outdoor Preparation 🏕️🥪
Ingredients:
• 2 slices of hearty bread (sourdough, ciabatta, or thick rustic bread works well)
• 1-2 tablespoons of butter or olive oil
• Beef steak
• 1-2 tomatoes
• A few pickles
• A handful of mixed salad
• Red onion
• 1-2 egg yolks
• Horseradish
• Mustard and mayonnaise sauce
• Salt and pepper to taste
Equipment:
• Campfire or portable outdoor grill
• Cast iron skillet or griddle
• Tongs or spatula
• Knife
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Fire or Grill:
• Light your campfire or preheat the portable grill. If using a campfire, let it burn down until you have a bed of hot coals.
2. Toast the Bread:
• Butter or oil one side of each slice of bread.
• Place the bread, buttered side down, in the skillet or directly on the grill.
• Toast until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
3. Cook the Steak:
• In the same skillet or on the grill, fry your steak until medium rare. This should only take about 4-5 minutes. Let it rest before slicing.
4. Assemble the Toast:
• Spread mustard sauce on the bread.
• Add slices of pickled cucumber.
• Add slices of tomato.
• Place the warm steak slices on top.
• Add mixed salad with sliced red onions.
• Grate fresh horseradish on your salad.
• Gently separate the egg yolk and carefully place it on top.
• Season with salt and pepper.
