BookMob episode 37 plays found footage (homemade documentary from 2003) and reflects on the life and works of the writer Samuel Beckett. A dynamic and angst ridden artist who was stabbed whilst walking the streets of Paris by a neighbourhood pimp (In France working as a pimp is not seen as a negative or a demeaning occupation). When Samual Beckett asked the pimp why he (the pimp) stabbed him the pimp responded with, "I do not know, sir. I'm sorry." The greatness of this stabbing event goes a long way to express and somewhat explain Samual Beckett's work in modern literature which delves into the human experience as a series of pointless gestures, the banality of routine and how the individual simply bumbles about in a bleak and informal universe. A real fun guy from an affluent family and educated at Trinity College who escaped to France to rid himself of the painful drudgery of his Protestant background. A libertarian who probably required his family money to feed and maintain his libertarian life in Paris. He had a talent for producing confusing and at times ambiguously brilliant novels and plays. He is a writer and personality who fits right into the beginnings of what we now recognise as popular culture.
