I think you're absolutely right when you talk about letting kids pick up books they want in school rather than making everyone read the same books. Totally agree with you about The Name of the Wind. I kept hearing how "amazing" and "well-written" it was, and knew it couldn't meet the hype. And just hearing about it sounded like all the generic fantasy tropes rolled into one. I was very reluctant to give it a read. But it absolutely blew me away. And that means a lot coming from me, because I hate, hate, hate Mary Sue (Stu?) characters (which Kvothe totally is) but I still managed to love it. Also agree that the second book isn't as good, especially the second half which was just digression after digression of Mary Sue being Mary Sue, but it still managed to captivate me enough to finish it in just a few sittings. I ate up those two books, and the Auri novella, in less than a week (finished yesterday). Now, of course, I'm regretting it. Reminding myself why I avoided this series for so long. I didn't want to have to sit and wait for YEARS (decades maybe) for the series to be wrapped up. But here we are. Hope it was worth it...

Love these kind of videos! My school system didn't make us read classics all that much either (except for Tristan and Iseult - which I remember not liking at all - and Of Mice and Men, which really moved me... but didn't when I read it as an adult. ._.). I read my very first classic after watching Les Misérables (the 2012 version with Hugh Jackman). Fortunately, it was an abridged version (I would have given up for sure otherwise!). I loved it so much and it opened a whole new world to me. I mostly read the most popular YA of my time (Harry Potter, Warriors by Erin Hunter, Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent...) and I was mainly reading for escapism. It has drastically changed today: I read mainly to learn more about other people's experiences (and that can be achieved in fiction through the themes explored). Reading has enriched my life in so many ways, and I wouldn't have known it if I hadn't given some genres a chance. :)

When I was in high school I hated reading because I was forced to read books I then thought were boring and it put me off reading, a lot of them where classic Croatian authors that I loved later on in life, but back then I only wanted to read fantasy and adventure books also mostly by Croatian authors, my favorites were Ivan Kusan and Anto Gardas, I think Ivan Kusan has a few that were translated to English if you wanna try and find it :) We should let kids chose more as long as they are reading. Recently I've been trying to read more books in English just to try and broaden my vocabulary a bit, that's how I've stumbled on your channel looking for recommendations. New subscriber here :)

I saw a play of Ocean at the End of the Lane and it was amazing. I haven't read the book but I have been meaning to. Its rare to find a story so rich with imagination and fantasy while also being so grounded at times. The play does so well to show the protagonists relationship with his father and sister and show the real world problems that they all have and how he escapes it. I think mystery around all the sort of magical stuff is also brilliant. The ending and beginning has an emotional touch (I won't say what emotion(s)) that is just brilliant. I need to read the book.

In high school, we were told to read "A Brave New World" and "1984". I loved the former and hated the latter, actually, never finished "1984". However a couple of years ago, I decided to pick up "1984" again, and enjoyed the book. I'm currently finishing "The Well of Ascension" and still love it. Some minor gripes, but doesn't take away the overall love and enjoyment of the second novel.

I keep getting completely thrown by starting to say, ‘I post videos every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday,’ and then realising you don’t anymore. Glad to know I’m not the only one 😆

it is really interesting that ANYONE would recommend a Bachman book as a starter into King. King himself has said that Bachman was like an alter ego and had a different writing style. He even describes it as if someone else wrote for him and he just got to read it. so, whoever told you that was rude lol

I’m so glad that my primary school’s reading system was what it was. Based on your reading level you had access to certain books. Once you got to the highest level you were allowed to take out any book from the library that you wanted. This is how I found Harry Potter and that led to the best fifteen minutes of mandatory reading time I ever had for the rest of the year.

I am reminded how much one’s taste may diverge so much from someone else’s. I forget how much you dislike unhealthy romances vs how much I’m fascinated by them.

I would like to see a video of you talking about what made you dislike fantasy before you read Mistborn:)

omg, thank you! I was recommended the Long Walk as my first King novel and hated it so very much. Most people don't seem to, though. the only other King I've read is the Shining, which was pretty cool. So as far as I'm concerned, King is a middling author :D

Eyes of the Dragon is one of my faves. The audiobook is fantastic. Didn't know it was a middle grade.

I remember loving Eyes of the Dragon when I read it as well. I’d have thought it would be up Merphy’s alley but I guess not. Great video though!

I totally agree with you on Anna and the French Kiss. I wanted a copy for so long, and when a friend gave me the book I couldn't wait to start it. About half way in, I just couldn't torture myself anymore and DNF the book.
