Wow! This stuff is amazing! It has so many power houses for the immune system. The bones first of all with all of their goodness then the herbs, mushrooms and veggies. You can't go wrong!
I can't wait to see how wonderful this works. Tiffany Butters, who I got the recipe from makes it every year and not only drinks it when necessary but sneaks this world of health into their family's soups. That is such a great idea!
Don't worry, if you feel like the taste of nettles is too strong just add some Better Than Bouillon and add some beefiness to it. You will still get the benefits of the immune stimulating goodness!
Here is the recipe...
Herbal Broth
Ingredients:
60 g dried maitake mushrooms
90 g dried shitake mushrooms
70 g astragalus root
70 g dried nettle leaf
10 g calendula
1 large organic onion
4 celery stalks
1 cup raw apple cider vinegar with the mother
2 gallons filtered water
Instructions:
*Use part of the 2 gallons water to rehydrate the mushrooms for about one hour.
*Blend the onion and celery in blender or food processor. Add the rehydrated mushrooms and blend again. Add water as needed to thin the slurry mixture.
*Add slurry to pot and simmer covered for 5 hours.
*Combine with bone broth of choice, heat together and can.
*Can for 20 minutes for pints and 25 minutes for quarts at 10 lbs of pressure. (check for your elevation)
[Herbal broth could be canned by itself but needs to be canned like a veggie broth. 30 minutes for pints and 35 minutes for quarts. If you can with a lower ratio of meat broth than I did, can for these times as well.]
This can be sipped as a drink or put into soup recipes to give them a boost.
Here are the benefits of the ingredients:
Calendula
Calendula has been shown to strengthen the immune system's ability to fight off infection and can be called on to kick the leftover infection caused by a passing flu or cold.
Stinging Nettle
It's also rich in vitamin C, which is a powerful aid to the immune system and may even protect against various types of cancer.
Astragalus Root
Studies have shown that astragalus has antiviral properties and stimulates the immune system, suggesting that it may help prevent colds.
Maitake Mushroom
It improves the performance of the immune system and has anti-cancer properties.
Shitake Mushroom
It supports the immune system, blood vessels and bones. Shiitakes are also high in compounds that have been shown to reduce inflammation and fight high cholesterol.
Onion
Onion is high in vitamin C, which may help regulate your immune health, collagen production, and iron absorption. It's also a powerful antioxidant that could help protect your cells from unstable, damaging molecules called free radicals.
Celery
Celery juice contains strong antimicrobial properties that naturally boost the immune system for optimal performance.
Apple Cider Vinegar
The “Mother” is a mix of yeast and bacteria that work as probiotics. In 2018, researchers found that probiotics have an immune-boosting quality that effectively fights influenza-like respiratory infections and the common cold
I hope you all enjoy this!
Blessings on your health for the winter friends,
Penny
