I am considering popping in a second hand tiny pc from work instead. I’d like to retain the power switches functionality in some way though. I wonder if it could be wired in line for just the monitor. Thoughts?

Looks nice (until you turn it on). It would be very nice to see a customized KDE for the whole thing (loading screen, no dock and no mouse by default), something like vintage KZitem TV or Lakka

21 quid! Well done….:) The only part that is a pain is making the few extra mm for the screen to fit, some filing and a little patience is required. We might add a howto to our github repo. In the meantime, feel free to fire us any specific questions via email.

I wouldn't say it was hard. Other than some mechanical challenges getting stuff to fit, and using a ac/dc converter to power it, it is essentially Manjaro linux and ytfzf.

@@VEEBProjects Now you can just go to all the film archives and use it for watching history, periscope films is a good one. Did you consider using one of those tiny micro projectors and using the original screen?

Hello, I got the LCD and it is 5mm too wide to fit in the E300. It seems that I would need to cut a lot of metal. How did you do that exactly? with what kind of tool? Many thanks

@@LiveAnotherDay24 We used a metal file, it took about an hour of patient filing. Someone sent us pics of how they did it and it looked like they'd used a Dremel. If you drop us an email we can send you a pic and a better description.

Not yet, but it is a nice first project, as it is really just getting a manjaro install on a pi, followed by some fiddling with the case. We’ll write it up and put it on github as soon as we get a chance. The idea of people making their own boostbox is pretty boosty for us :)

That's amazing. Such a cute little terminal. When you'd said you were using a terminal player for KZitem, I thought it was going to convert the video into ANSI/ASCII - I wonder if that'd be possible? It'd be pretty hard to watch but might be a nice little idea, to simulate VT102 resolution.

I have definitely seen something that converts video to ASCII. It briefly reminded me of printing out 'pictures' out on a dot matrix printer. The other thing it gets used as is a neomutt terminal. CLI email is the only way.

A dremel sounds like a nice quick way, I used a metal file to shave off the two notches inside the frame at the top of the screen location and part of the internal frame near the speaker:) The screen is a 7” 800x600 hdmi screen from ali express. I’ll add a link in the description as soon as I get a chance.
