As an Algerian, the reason for the existence of so many bootlegs is that foreign companies cannot implement here without partnering with a local company in some type of 50/50 contract, to avoid foreign monopolies and "economic imperialism". I think it's a great thing to protect the local market from foreign companies that the local ones could never compete with.

I am Algerian and I've been following you for a while now, and am happy that when you visited my country you didn't get swarmed by the Algerian online mob for visiting like what's happening with other content creators LOL (It's not omnious or anything, it's just that Algeria isn't used to getting tourists so when we do have one, it's exciting) and as for the knock-offs, Algeria started seeing an apparition of a variety of knock-offs due to incentives for local production (coupled with both its upsides and downsides), but there are still some hidden gems that's produced locally that I've yet to encounter the equivelant of anywhere else!

different melting points for chocolate doesn't necessarily mean different ingredients. interestingly, you could have the exact same ingredients, and yet have 2 chocolates that melt at entirely different temperatures. the reason, is that chocolate molecules have more than one way to crystalize. so depending on the treatment of the chocolate, and the curing process, even starting with the exact same substance, you can get various types of chocolate. for instance, "Beta chocolate" has a high enough melting point that it will even stay solid while you handle it, or even in a fairly hot sunny day in algeria, provided it's stored in the shade. while "Gamma chocolate", melts at temperatures that are well below room temperature, so it will only stay solid for a very short while after taking it out of the fridge. and just like in any other crystal, if you have seeds of a type of chocolate, you can make liquid chocolate crystalize around those nucleation points, growing into the specific chocolate crystal you seeded it from.
@curhob

For those who don't know, this is also called tempering- Bringing chocolate to certain temperatures and then cooling it down. it's done in factories to make chocolate stay set at room temperature, and H2CT has explained this extensively.

It's great to know that Algeria has good quality chocolate. A lot of countries in the developing world have very poor quality "chocolate" far worse than US chocolate, and US chocolate is already pretty bad compared to other Western countries due to its low cacao content and use of corn syrup instead of cane sugar. In Europe the cacao content is 30% and in the US its like 10% to be considered chocolate. In a lot of developing countries the cacao content is even less or sometimes none and is mostly just brown coloring and tastes awful.
@Pan_Galactic_Gargle_Blaster

the issue with the flavor of big name brand US milk chocolate is the higher butyric acid content due to how the milk solids are processed. Gives it a slight cheesy/vomit hint in the aftertaste. There are plenty of better options than Hershey's in the US though.
@laurasnow7822
Жыл бұрын
The Celebrity chocolate bar will probably always be softer because if it is melted once you can’t really cool it back to a less warm room temperature and have it return to a solid state. Basically, the chocolate must be re-tempered all over again if it melts because the crystal formation is lost. Bla bla bla im guessing you already know this

As an Aussie there's a few treats from AU / NZ which I think you'd find quite interesting: - Mint Slice (one of the most delicious biscuits ever made) - Tim Tams (if you get your hands on these then you absolutely have to try a "tim tam slam") - Chocolate fish (this is an interesting NZ-specific treat. There's an aspect of culture tied up with this treat too) We also have our own localised version of a Snickers bar (called a "picnic", made by Cadbury), though these days Snickers has just as much product recognition.

Perhaps because Algerian producers base themselves on European standards and because they aim to export. . For example, in Algeria there are several brands of dark chocolate or hazelnuts which are made of cocoa mass and cocoa butter, zero vegetable fat and which are as good as imported brands such as Ritter Sport (German chocolate) or Milka. Relatives living in Canada brought us Canadian chocolates and cookies, they were of very poor taste, made with vegetable fat. We also produce chocolates made with vegetable fat but they are still delicious.

some dollar-stores in ontario (canada) have knockoff kit-kats and a few other bar styles, on the same shelves as the "originals" even which isn't that odd, if i think about it: it's more odd that only dollar-stores carry generic-brand versions of most candy-bars, when stuff like generic-brand oreo cookies are ubiquitous edit: there's also knockoff snickers with similarly few-if-any peanuts, and i'm pretty sure a lot of the more unusual candy and off-brands in these stores are also from turkey

I like the word "inspired" more than bootleg or copied, it's less controversial. Bootleg has this illegal connotation to it. Like the product is illegal and might have copied more than the packaging and mimic the original with lower quality ingredients and maybe unsafe ones too. More often than not, these companies just ride on popular brand's success by trying to make their own version and sometimes even make a close copy of the original's packaging but I don't think their intention is to trick people to buy them thinking they are the original. There's a cookie biscuit in the Philippines called cream o. A kind of classic here. Not knowing what oreo is, I never thought it was a "copy" of it until I was more aware of things like that. The packaging color scheme is similar too but the flavor is not the same. I cant remember exactly, cause it's been years since I have both. It is interesting finding these copies though and the word bootleg is easier to say than saying this is inspired by x product. lol
