@@Lia72092Mine is 11 weeks now. I did much of this but the ‘crate training’ was a non-starter. Mine would not stop pining and biting the bars no matter how much time I spent with treats and calming her. I could get her calm while I was interacting: but a step away and she was in deep distress. I gave up. I’ve never even known anyone use ‘crates’ with their dog until the last few years anyway. She’ll tolerate being in a room with the door closed if I need to keep her contained-so I leave it at that.

They certainly are. Our BC once growled at me as I was going to sit next to her on the sofa (never heard her growl before), I guess she was warning me not to sit on her legs, I was quite offended that she would think I'd do that and said word for word:- "ohh! If you're worried about me sitting on you how about next time I come back to sit next to you you sit up, let me sit down and then lay back down against me?" Every single time since she would sit up on the sofa, allow me to sit down and then would return to sprawling over me

@@deendrew36 Hate to say it but that's why you never have a dog as a single person for the most part. Someone has to be around a dog for the most part even if it's part-time (if one or more parties work). Kids are great when you have a dog. Dogs are always around them. Sadly, if you work a lot and away for long periods dogs tend to revert to destructive instincts - digging, scratching, biting, destroying things in the home.

I was one of the few lucky people who could take their dog to work. As a border (brown n white) he learned quickly. Training was constant (little and often) as he was with me 24/7. Folk thought I was good with dogs. The truth is it was the other way around. You could see him figure things out and the "A-Haa!!!" moment when the penny dropped. Even before he passed away at 14 he was still as sharp as a tack mentally. Amazing dog, so laid back, open and inquisitive (not laser focused like some BC's) unbelievably good socially and situationally even when off the lead. We'd had a few over the years but Treacle was that once in a lifetime dog.

She passed away few months ago, unfortunately. But the doctor said that she was older than what we thought she was, at least 20. She was my aunt's dog, but I do not think she remembered exactly how old the dog was. My aunt passed away almost 4 yrs ago and the dog was left to me. To be honest, I just fed her what my aunt did, dry food and cooked chicken breast, used to make a sort of chicken soup from chicken breast and chicken back. And she also got canned dog food. So nothing very special, but she liked variety. I think her longevity was also inherited. We also had her father who was 24 when he passed away.

Watch films of what border collies were born to do, working livestock. It's a beautiful thing to see. And hopefully it will make you realise how special intelligent and athletic they are. If you really want to get a collie you must be able to commit yourself to giving them what they need. Don't get one just because you like the idea. So many good dogs go to waste because of unsuitable owners.

Great training tips but the only thing I'd say is at the start when she was in the crate and cried you gave her a treat. Completely understand that you're training her to stay and not rush but it also trains her that if she cries she gets food! Which she was starting to do :) Its just something I noticed and I feel for new collie owners its an easy thing to accidentally teach as our collies are incredibly smart ❤ My collie pup Ollie is really enjoying gentle walks in Yorkshire hoping when hes a little older to gently start him on longer 20 mile hikes He has awesome recall and brilliant obedience already ❤❤

Hi there, Eclipsery! The breeding breeds can be stimulated by motion around them. Doing some stationary exercises with some of those distractions around is always a great way to show your dog that you’re more rewarding than those other things. For a lot of herding breeds, the act of watching/stalking the distraction can be reward enough for them to choose that thing over you! Teaching a “Leave It” skill can be helpful to avoid getting to that point. Here’s a video that will be helpful to teach your dog to check back in with you: How To Teach Your Puppy To Leave It - kzitem.info/news/bejne/1XqP4Iadn2Wkgn4 Happy Training ~Ken

Genevieve Mathis I have had rescue dogs as well. My last was 5 years old when I got him. I typically do the same work with an older dog. Much of what we do with pups is preventative. Ie avoiding handling issues, food bowl possession, pulling on the leash, etc. But it works for all dogs. Just means it may take a little longer if they have to unlearn a behaviour. If you are having specific issues check out the library of videos. It’s very extensive.

that's all good and clearly presented, thanks. The only bit I don't think I saw or got was, the lure to bed didn't seem to be paired with a command...? Like "in your bed! Yes!" or similar. She only gave the marker, Yes, but how will the pup associate going to the bed if not paired with a unique command?
