Wow, its almost as if he is directly talking about Aliens Colonial Marines. That card trick is a metaphor for how they fucked the game up. He talks about if a developer makes a good game, the audience will trust the developer. Then he goes on to say that if a developer fails, the audience loses trust in the developer, much like how a magician can lose the trust of his or her audience if their tricks fail.

Truly one of the greatest minds in the video game industry right now. One of the people who has never let me down when it come to his companies games. I loved Brothers In Arms, Borderlands, and their work on Half Life. I don't blame them for the abomination that was Duke Nukem Forever. They basically salvaged one of the biggest train wrecks in video game history after obtaining the franchise.

One interesting thing about that theory...Borderlands 1 & 2 was released during the so called development timeline of Aliens: Colonial Marines. The publisher SEGA, gave them plenty of time, and lead-way (not exactly cracking the whip id say). Regardless of whether they had the ability to actually pull this off or not, you have to admit... there's something fishy going on here.

I think that's why people weren't as mad about Duke Nukem. Dissappointed, but not really as angry. A:CM is another story though. Although, whatever happened to delaying a game if it isn't good enough by your own standards? It's not like it was being produced alongside a movie or anything.

"You expect to see the ink on the face of the card, but you don't expect them to be blank in the middle, right? You don't expect that.." Which is correct, when I'm shown a card, I don't expect the rest to be blank, just like when I'm shown a WIP demo in E3, I don't expect the final product to be vastly inferior in quality, so Randy, where you at man? Can we at least get some dedicated servers?

I kind of wonder if you're not right after the original Borderlands went through a drastic graphics change after the first cinematic trailer. Instead they ended up going for a cell shaded look to cut back on time/money if I remember right. Too bad they didn't have a crapload of trailers of ACTUAL gameplay of the new version of A:CM to save the masses like they did with Borderlands.

It depends on whether or not they really DID try to hide the fact that it was horrible last second to make more money or not, and whether the video shown at E3 was an elaborate cutscene and NOT gameplay. That's just shady if it turns out to be the case. I don't think they'll ever make a bad Borderlands game, but everything aside from that, it's really up in the air.

Kind of like the Silicon Knights people that were sooooo upset over poor reviews and complaints about their heaping pile of a game that was STILL probably better than A:CM. Also noted, Gearbox were mad at reviewers when they gave them free early copies of Duke Nukem and the reviewers gave them shoddy reviews. Like they didn't know the game was garbage in comparison to a game like Borderlands.

Gearbox studios has amaizing franchize: Borderlands. Just like TES and Bethesda Game studios it's their main focus and the only thing they are good at. Borderlands 1 & 2 are great games and apparently, it is the only type of games they are capable of doing. Just like Bethesda and Fallout 3 which is basically TES with guns in Fallout setting in terms of gameplay flow and pace. So if you see anything that is not Borderlands or Borderlands with something else - don't buy it. Don't get mad at them.

Gearbox didn't make Counter-Strike, the tried to make Counter-Strike CZ but it was retracted and given to another studio and they had virtually no hand in the final product. Tony Hawk 3 was made by Neversoft (RIP) and the job of porting the game to PC was outsourced to gearbox. It's a stretch to claim Gearbox "made" a game because they touched it at one point. If you're going to fanboy a developer, maybe read up on their achievements instead of glossing their wikipedia page.
@Kindahuge

I would respect your comment more if you didn't just credit Gearbox with the "Half-life series." They did one very nice campaign, but it WAS built upon Valve's hard work, universe, and Valve had a big hand in how that campaign expansion played out. I like Gearbox, I'm an immense fan of Borderlands, but be factual or you'll sound like a fanboy.

You mean aside from the six Half-Life games they've made, Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike CZ. Tony Hawk 3, Borderlands and Borderlands 2 just to name a few? You are seriously judging them based on 1 or 2 games out of a total of 28 games that they've made? Colonial Marines was a shared collaboration and development where Gearbox got shut out when another studio changed all their code and all their work without approval, same thing with Duke Nukem Forever. Either grow up or take your medicine.

Selling a game to consumers that sucks, but looks like the product shown is one thing. Selling a product that looks drastically different then what was advertised is false advertising which is illegal and immoral. You can't blame consumers for buying a game that looks fun when the final product looks nothing like that when they actually receive the game. That's the companies misleading you. It's like a company advertising prime rib, instead brings out a plate of spam.

I'll judge anybody that promises one thing, and delivers another. Gearbox farmed out the work so they could focus all their attention on their bread and butter, Borderlands. It's not the first time profit has trumped integrity. Gearbox had some pretty lofty claims about Colonial Marines and they didn't deliver, but maybe I and the 95% of people that feel the same way are wrong.

He's just quoting what the guy literally said in an interview about the game being amazing, when in fact, it was one of the worst games of the year. Where did you hear this thing about another company changing their code, btw? I'm sure that will be brought up in court on their defense, if it's true, but it definitely doesn't change the fact that they misled people into believing the game looked drastically different than original presentation.
@Headchrusherdeth

Actually i am pretty sure what happened. But the game i was expecting was Borderlands 2, not Alien CM. However, that doesn't justify their actions for ruining Alien CM. The reason i disagree with that comment is because people think Gearbox is a completely shitty company. Rather, it is a company that is only capable of either producing brilliant games, or pubic shit games.
