I wish I was intelligent enough to be a skeptic at an early age too. I believed it all, whole heartedly...born again, on fire for Jesus etc etc etc. When I read or heard something about Christianity that didn't make sense I just ignored it and instead read a passage that strengthend my faith. Realizing it was all man made and that the religion I'd believed in my whole life was not true was heart breaking. I'm not married, but I believe it would be worse than going through a divorce. If I'd only been a bit more intelligent like this girl and be a skeptic at an early age, I'd be spared for that ordeal and my teenage years might have been a bit more exiting. I can understand the hatred you must feel and would never want to deny it, but, I would recommend trying to channel that anger into energy and compassion. You obviously know better than most that good reasonable people can fall victim to religious delusions. You can use that to help other see the alternatives to Faith. Hate never really helps, It really isn't anyones fault, religions grew and evolved organically with civilization, as we tryed to make sense of the world, I think we are reaching a point where more and more people are aware that they are untrue, unnecessary and even destructive. You are now another voice of reason and logic, and can show others that not believing doesn't make you immoral.

I too had the same doubts growing up as she did but being me for the handy way out I just went a long with it. I too like her read both the old and new testament twice. This really had me in a quandary. When I read it all a second time this really created more questions about the whole system than it answered. After this I started to reasearch the whole subject. Works by Dawkins and Hitchens really opened my eyes. At this very time the whole RC child abuse opened up and I was hoping that this would be looked into and it wasn't and was covered up and hid away. That really put the tin hat on it for me so now non believer and very happy because of it. But feel slight anger for two reasons. One is for my mother who was very intelligent and was hoping to go to college but never did because in those days it was frowned upon and she gave her live to the devotion of the church and became a proper RC wife. She did this not out of choice but out of belief in a blind faith. Secondly for me I wasted half my life in the belief that if we get it wrong in this one we always have the next and there was no need to be ambitious or to help fellow man just believe and will be ok. I regret the waste of possibly half my life. We only have one live and have live it to the full we do not get another.

to be religous you need to be weak. simple as that. nobody enters religion with a strong mind and body. you allways fall into religion when you are in a weak moment. Weak moments are: children 0-15 (sometimes 0-20) all comes down to the information they recieve, the less you know the weaker you are. other moments are obvious, tragedy, death, loneliness, despair, fear, these are the key factors to even begin to dive into a religion. shit happens, get over it. tend to your flame within yourself, because if you are to weak, it might blow out, and its hard to rekindle your flame, without your own flame, you become a moth who is drawn to the illusion of light that is religion...

Myles Schachter I do not know the story of Luther that well, but yes, he was weak. thats kind of the point when i say "to be religious you need to be weak". the reason he and other christians stay by the religion is not because of strength, its a strong faith, that is true, but it has nothing to do with strength. the fear of what would happen if he left his religion or did anything to oppose it is what drives most people. its very simply, God is at best a Bully, and the religious people are the kids on the playground who do not dare to oppose him. just the thought scares the living shit out of them. now, why be afraid of something you have never seen, (and dont give me the bullshit god is everywhere, god is my Mp3 player, or my socks). simple reason, fear, indoctrination, and the grinding from parents to parents that "if you go against him, its bad, you will go to hell". its fear driven, and fear is a weakness. I cannot stand the people who just bows their head in shame and does nothing in sight of the bully. so yes, its a weakness, and Luther was weak. you can paint yourself as a strong believer, but if you are honest to yourself, i bet you realize that what keeps you in the religion is simple fear. if you did not fear hell. you would not really be bothered. same with where your beliefs comes from, can you recall your parents telling you "this is how it is" and simply following as the puppets we are when we are kids? we can basicly trick kids into beliving ANYTHING, this has to do with their weakness, in the kids form its uneducated, inexperienced, and trust in the ones who are supposed to take care of you. religion only differs from Santa Clause in one way, at some point the kids realize that Santa is just a dressed up dad. and it brings their whole world down. sadly, nobody does this with Jesus and God. and its simple, not believing in Santa does nothing, but maaaby the "Magic" of christmas for the parents, they successfully tricked their kids into behaving good for the benefits of gifts. not believing in Santa only brings it down to a gathering where the kids still gets gifts. to try and educate people on the fairytale that is the bible, well, then you have the fear of hell. since religion does not want to lose its followers, it threatens them with what will happen if they leave. if you go back in time, you where prompted to kill your brother if he stopped believing in God. just as Islam has it in muslim countries where Sharia Law is above all else. any group who excerts extreme punishment for leaving must be treated as an evil cult. designed to keep people in the dark. you are not even supposed to listen to any other outside information that can waver your belief. they took you weak, and they want you to stay weak. everything about the abrahamic religions is constructed to keep people from leaving. now, if there is a god, then there is no way in HELL that he is the author of the bible, its far more plausable that its the devil who created it to tempt weak people with a comfort blanket and corrupt them into doing horrible things to their fellow man. i can go on and on, but i doubt you comprehend half, thats the issue when speaking to religious people, something as ordinary as information and knowledge, is withheld, and that makes it hard to converse with religious people, its frustrated how flawed the thoughtprocess is, so unable to comprehend information. but its not surprising, since you are kept in the dark, kept weak, itsnot a surprise, but its frustrating.

Johan Magnusson You drone on endlessly, but say nothing. When Luther was asked to recant, he said NO, knowing that he was likely sealing his death. How that can be weak? @reaxor
9 жыл бұрын
Myles Schachter i will try to explain so even a child can understand okey? if he recants, due to his strong belief, he will be cast to hell and not permited into heaven. this is a far worse faith for a godly believer, then having his life ended. to him, he was on a surefire way to heaven to be praised for his strong faith. he did this simply because he lack the knowledge, he was tricked like all the rest into believing its the truth. and you might believe he came to heaven, me? i believe he died a pointless death. do you understand that fear is what drives him? well most likely anyways, or that he was a fullblown psychopath. (weakness in the mind). he was afraid that when he die, if he is not true to the religion, he would not enter heaven. simple.
@mylesjs5326
9 жыл бұрын
Johan Magnusson And all the other Protestants willing to be burned at the stake were also psychopaths? If you read the writings and testimonies of these men, you would know how foolish you're being. People who have strong faith don't fear hell because they know they're not going there. The truth is that Luther and the other Protestants were willling to die for the honor of God, the same way any brave soldier is willing to die for his country. And God is far more worth dying for than any country.

People are threatened when others do not agree with their beliefs systems. That's normal, and I get it. But the fundamentals of logic say this: a negative cannot be proved. The burden of proof is on the person making the claim only. A Christian essentially makes the claim that a god exists. Atheists make no claims of their own; they simply do not accept any claims about the existence of god. Demanding proof from atheists that a god doesn't exist would be no different than you denying the existence of Bigfoot and someone demanding proof from you.

The tenets of Christianity originate in the Christian Bible. The bible is proof of people having written about someone named Jesus, but the book itself is not evidence of anything other than the book itself any more than the Harry Potter books are not evidence of any real boy wizard. The difference between the two is that no one generally attempts to believe that the Harry Potter books are true; they are accepted as fiction. Both books portray an individual with magical powers in a world of dragons, talking animals, alternative planes of existence, and miracles. You might consider that many other gods also have a "holy book". What makes the Christian Bible any more "evidence" of a Christian god that the Koran, for example, legitimizes the religion of Islam and the existence of the Prophet Mohammad? It is common for Christians to refer to the bible as "proof", and Christians often quote passages in the bible to support their claim. The problem is that anyone could write a book making an extraordinary claim and then say that the book is evidence of of their claim. But that is just not how evidence works. In order to believe that the bible is evidence, one must first accept by "faith" that is true. And faith is, by definition, the absence of evidence. Either there is genuine, verifiable evidence of the existence of gods, or accepting the existence of god(s) is a matter of believing without evidence. But when someone tells you that what a book says is proof of the truth of what that very same book says, tell them to stop insulting your intelligence. As a former Christian, my position is rather simple: I will believe what the evidence tells me to believe, not a book or a guy in a white suit pretending to heal people with one hand while he robs them with the other. If there is a god, and he is all knowing and all powerful, and if he made what I am then he knows what it would takes to convince me, and he would know that, as a student of logic, it will be more than just an old book that includes passages of murder, torture and rape at god's command. I don't believe because I am an atheist. I am an atheist because I do not believe.

Rhennon Blackstorm Your definition of evidence doesn't allow for Design so you eliminate the proof before asking for it. You don't want the evidence that is why you rule it out before you ask. You are intellectually dishonest and totally hypocritical. Life requires Design, Engineering, Manufacturing all from a system of code (information) demonstrate that none of these are used by life. If producing life is explainable by chance prove it. Demonstrate it. Not hypothesis as you do not want creationists to use but give the exact process step by step to creat a living cell and then show someone who has done it. If not then by your own logic materialism does not exist because it cannot do it.

Ronald, to say life requires design is intellectually dishonest. If you start with belief you cannot possibly control your confirmation bias. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Your god of the gaps is losing ground to scientific discovery, trying to shoe horn him into current understanding is illogical. Great if it makes you feel good but don't mistake feelings of security as evidence.

Although, you are dishonest when you cannot provide empirical evidence for your god and abuse those whom you are unable to convince. I always thought something wasn't right as I "prayed" at the foot of my bed because my mum said so, joined in with hymns at school, went to Sunday school (3 times), joined the Boys' Brigade, performed in the nativity, etc. There was never any fear that I'd be judged for my deeds in another life. I read the bible when I was 14 and wasn't stirred by it. My atheism was there, very early on, but I didn't put a name to it until much later, as I didn't know the word. I am what evolution made me.

This is how I was! I asked the priest why the church didn't teach evolution, why other religions didn't go to heaven, and why we chose a torture device as a symbol! At first when I found myself as an atheist, I felt awful! But then I told myself that it was okay, and I felt so much stronger! Great video.

Lucid dreaming is a skill that must be developed (from my understanding) and sometimes even if you think you are dreaming, you still cannot control every thing that is going on. And just because I know that I am digesting food does not mean that I can choose to stop digesting food. It seems that the mind unconsciously does many things that, even when we are aware of them, we cannot control.

The most significant thing about being a secular person is that one can get rid of most of his or her pre-judging and prejudice on things or people during the process of perceiving, knowing, understanding and learning.

That seems a sensible interpretation of the parable. One part of the claim seems to make sense, while another does not. It seems that if someone is set against believing something it is difficult to convince them to believe in it. However there is a difference between someone being set against something, and someone being unable to believe in something because they find it contradictory. No matter how I try, I cannot picture a square circle or a God both loving and cruel.

Awesome, thanks! The trick, as the tortoise mentions early, is not convincing the person that is willing to assent to Z, simply after agreeing to A and B, but the one that denies the hypothetical. Or at least does not at first agree to the hypothetical. That person, like the tortoise will fall into the regress and never be logically entailed to admit anything.

I watched many christians in churches who had lots of questions and were afraid to ask. Because they were taught, do not ask questions, believe and keep giving your 10% and wait for a wonderful harvest in your life. These people I discribed are scared to leave the church because they might go to hell. Being in limbo is worst being a 100% hot for a God or 100% Cold for God. That is truly sad to be living like that. I walked away and renounced all religions and I was not strucked dead.

This story sounds very similar to mine... I asked many questions and received few answers. I grew up in a place where there was only one culture, completely unexposed to other ideas and ideologies. This remained unchanged until I attended university where I began to realize that I was an atheist. I only called myself Christian because that was the title I was given. Unlike most atheists, for me it was more of a realization of who I was rather than a change of character.

Goodness a lot of comments to reply to, I'll do my best to hit them all. I'm not a solipsist, that's a metaphysical position about how the world actually is. The skeptic does not claim that you are in a skeptical scenario, merely that you can't know that you are not. The solipsist might respond to your point that we cannot control the worlds in our dreams, at least not consciously, even though they are entirely in our minds.

This is how I was. I was raised in a Catholic family, and attended a catholic school for ten years, into high school. I can honestly say that I never believed in god. As a kid, you don't have the faculties to understand such a proposition, and so before the age of eleven or twelve or so, you just go along with it as if it is true; you don't understand it or believe it. I went through the motions, and once I was equipped to deal with questions of the sort, I already had my answer.

...3. That sounds like a kind of coherentism (ie beliefs are justified because they fit into a web or pattern of beliefs). The problem that this faces is called the raft problem. Basically there is nothing to tether these beliefs to reality. They could all be equally false, but support each other, just as perceptions in dream seem to support each other, but have no connection to reality.

The reason for its validity is that science shapes itself around the truth rather than proclaiming itself to BE the truth without substance. Most people don't seem to realize that organized religion usually holds little substance outside of the millions of voices that they have.

Fair enough. My example still had "platonic ideas" ringing in my head from Drud, and I apologize for that. "One apple is equal to itself." That is effectively the argument. People question how you can know this if you can't even confirm its existence or your own. In effect, if you can't really test logic outside of your own head, how can you apply it to reality. Like the concept of god, it can't be proven either way. Similarly, both sides takes this as victory. It's just a headache.

Metaphysically you seem to be correct. It's not about the metaphysical side, however, it's about the epistemological side of things. It is not about whether logic is in fact true, but whether we can know it to be true. If we must assent to an infinite number of propositions in order to do any deduction, it seems that even if logic is the case, we are unable to do it.

I agree with you 100% Lets say, If you were born blind from birth, never knew sight, you heard others speak of sight, but you as being born blind cant even imagine sight. lets say the time comes for you to cross the rd in the middle of NYC, would you feel safe having a child follow you across the street? The point is, though we may think we are not harming anyone according to what we know or don't, to destroy ones faith based on what we cant see will lead that person into destruction. Love =Life

Same for me. I can remember how I was peer pressured into getting saved and how awesome it felt knowing I was apart of the group. I was just a lost kid searching for hope. I was lucky to see the hypocritical nature of those who welcomed me as friend after I joined. They would praise and worship and claim to be good, yet when Monday rolled around... well you can all guess what they were. Christians are what turned me away from God, and soon after, I started really reading the parts of the Bible they didnt want us to take "literally". I also started listening to Christian "Death" Metal and reading Bob Larsons books about the Occult, which thankfully got me interested in learning about other religions, as well as playing D&D with other fake Christians teens. After 4 years of living with god glasses on, I turned 13 and became an Atheist.

But are we searching for the simplest belief structure or the one that corresponds to reality? Your comment seems to suggest that there are two things we are looking for 1. Explanatory power 2. Simplicity. If one believes that all of their senses and reason are merely representations presented by and evil deceiver, and that the only things that exist are that person and that deceiver, they can explain anything and are only believing that two things exist.

I'm going to try and pick at this. 1. If this is the matrix, a dream, etc. it doesn't matter. It is still the Universe regardless of what manner the Universe is being 'projected'. 2. You can refute the "I exist" argument, I think, therefore I am. I know I exist for that reason. 3. All of my senses can cross confirm each other, some areas where this falls flat are illusions, where senses are clearly different from reality. I could go on further about those, but I'm running out of space.

You know, I took a course on knowledge and reality and came away with a simple conclusion there is no knowledge no matter how hard philosophers want to say otherwise. And after thinking about this for a bit I realized these videos were not made for someone like me who has more or less decided on the question. Rather they are for the people that are noticing the issues with religion and become conflicted as their inner values clash, and these provide the much needed support

I was so scared of giving up my Catholic faith. My mother is a devout Catholic and I felt if I ever left that, I would break her heart. I would break God's heart. The truth was, I never was obligated to make others happy. As long as I was happy, that's what my mother really wanted. Not because I was Catholic. And honestly, I am not obligated to please God, either. If he is as understanding as they say he is, then I have confidence that he wouldn't really care. I'm still a good person; and that's what matters in the end.

Supposedly one of the things that separates philosophy from rhetoric is that philosophy claims not to rely on the person presenting the argument, but merely the argument itself (see Plato's Gorgias). According to philosophers, Descartes's Cogito is a powerful argument whether he says it or whether a bum on the street says it. However the religious would claim that a parable found int he bible has more power than one that was just made up off the top of one's head.

What I remember about my high school is that I was pretty bored, I had read Einstein long before ever a teacher started talking about him. School was always too slow for me, and I prefer to learn things by looking them up instead of someone telling me what and in which order I have to learn. Anyway, not all people learn the same way, not all remember everything, and only very few question what they get teached.
