MY father joined the Marine Corps in September 1961 and shipped off for Paris Island. He was in the Marines until July 1966. He was 23. The Marines said they did not want him to go and wanted him to stay in Marine Intelligence and go to language school. When he asked what language and the said Vietnamese, he said no thanks. I give him credit. He could not be drafted because he had done his 5 years and was honorably discharged.

I remember that day! I am the girl extra with the wool suit. The day was extraordinarily hot (about 85 degrees and humid) in Dallas' Oak Cliff area. Lots of waiting and standing. Jerry Levine and Frank Whaley were hilarious and Tom Cruise was a gentleman. Oliver Stone,was what can I say, Oliver Stone. My sister and I kept messing up the scene because we were whispering too loud. Later on he wanted to have us stand in for some other scenes that got deleted. I just remember the crew yelling,"We need the Hermanas!!!" Thank you for posting!

What ever people think of Oliver Stone and Ron Kovack, this movie changed the way soldiers were treated in Afghanistan and Iraq. There was more of an effort to get them better hospital care and more emotional support from civilians. The major part that was lacking was mental health care. There is such a stigma, its not crazy to not know how to deal with killing people.

How do you know that the film had an impact on the medical care for veterans? The film came out in the 80s and politicians have been squabbling over who's to blame for the state of the VA hospital for years. Although I would like to believe that, I've heard horror stories from veterans returning home only to be facing eviction and various other problems.
@charlesmaximus9161

I pray you’re right, but I’m not so sure this film had much of an impact on the veterans’ hospitals themselves, though I do agree that this film absolutely had a major influence on the general American culture at large. Young, naïve, impressionable, and idealistic. It's exactly the kind of guys military recruiters prey upon and manipulate. That's what happened with Ron Kovic along with myself way back when I was 18 years old. Only difference is Ron Kovic got one of the absolute the worst consequences of combat where as I was lucky enough to have served without getting seriously injured. I learned my lesson from my military experience. I hope Ron Kovic learned his lesson as well. Any young person thinking about joining the military better think very deeply about what they're getting themselves into.

Jeremiah Shea I was the complete opposite. I joined the Air Force in 1988 just because I wanted a job and a career. In 2006, reality struck me and I was assigned to Afghanistan for a year with the Army at 38 years of age after a career of ease and peacetime. Luckily nothing happened to me, but we were under constant threat of having our compound bombed or shot at on missions. And of course, few people in the Air Force are really patriotic and want to serve in the war, they just join and want and easy paycheck and live the college life style and all the freebies of food, shelter, and dental care.

Paddy Pup Yes, the Memphis Belle movie made it look pretty realistic despite the corny and cliched script. Those planes looked like crude sheet metal that could crash on the slightest discrepancy. I was talking mainly about today’s enlisted in the Air Force, the branch I was in for 21 years. Very few are these idealistic types wanting to serve their country or fight in war. Mostly a lot of entitled kids from middle and upper middle-class backgrounds now. I loved the realism of Ron’s working-class background. His father’s supervisor job in a supermarket back then supported a wife, several kids, and a decent small house in the suburbs, but today that’s probably not even possible unless you work at Costco.

When Ron talks about Cuba, he was certainly not aware that Jupiter missiles were placed in Turkey by the CIA targeting the Soviet Union and the balance of power was not in equilibrium. Hence the Russian ICBMs in Cuba. He was probably not aware either that the Vietnam people were fighting a national struggle for independence against centuries of foreign occupation, irrespective of the domestic political ideology. The Chinese, French, Japanese. And he certainly had no idea about the Gulf of Tonkin false flag incident initiated by his own government. Vietnam was primarily about the military-industrial complex and profits hiding behind McNamara's domino theory which was just that, a theory. Same story with Iraq (WMDs?) and the oil industry. So-called war on terror? Before you enrol, I suggest reading a history book first. Or visiting a VA hospital.

I remember calling into a conservative talk radio show back in 2006-7 and having a very unpopular opinion back then (probably still). I argued recruiters shouldn't be allowed to go to a high school to recruit nor should the schools have any pamphlets promoting joining the military. The host just about blew his top and wondered why I thought that. I think he called me radio friendly names. I explained to him that high school students are too young to have recruiters or materials influencing them. They should at least let them know in case of a war they more than likely will experience PTSD. They can make their decision to join the military without the platform of a high school. Their brains are fully developed yet.

No, not McDonald's. Since this movie is, AT TIMES, loosely and/ or inaccurately based on events, I believe he was supposed to be the founder of All American Burger on Merrick Rd. in Massapequa. Later in the movie, after Ron returns home, it is indirectly implied because Steve explains his hamburger restaurant's geographical location. This movie drives home my beloved Massapequa at every opportunity. I have no problem with that! Tom cruise did not make a realistic high schooler. Even hanks managed to look young in Forrest Gump

Seriously? Tom pulled it of just fine, considering he was 25-26 when this was shot.

Back then most high schoolers looked like young men and women, not 12 year olds like today.

the dreamy background music that pervades this film, nearly ruins this film.

I think the opposite. Otherwise the naivete seems imperceptible. The music places the naivete in the innocence of the time

@@amitm7555 I get what he is going for with the music reflecting their naive innocence and idealism before crushed with the harsh reality of war, yadda yadda. I am saying he could've shown that in other ways such as delving more deeply into pre-Vietnam characterizaton of Kovic and his friends, showing their rose-tinted perceptions. As it is, Stone just slapped on this loud, sappy, silly, maudlin, overdone music in bad attempt to replace the characterization he never really did. Even if he was trying to 'style-ize' the feel of the film, in this case this awful music stands out in it's annyoying frequency, melodramatic absurdity and overall mis-placement. That's why I stand by my original comment.
