i wonder if one could make a “borojo coffee” out of the seeds and roast and grind and brew it if the plant is from the coffee plant family?

Rubiaceae is a very large group of plants that includes some very poisonous members too. So the mere fact that it’s in the same family isn’t any guarantee of edibility, let alone the safe assumption that it will coffee. :-)

Have you tried Genipa americana? From the same family with similar fruit, really sweet and thick consistency. It´s used to make natural blue dye that can stain the cells of the skin from inside. The green fruit is used for this purpose and it only comes out with the natural renovation of the cells of the skin.

On two separate occasions while in Colombia visiting family I was told to try Borojó icecream and both times I had mixed feelings; overall it’s not bad though! I was just happy to learn about a fruit that I had never heard of (since in the U.S. I don’t think it exists). My family also introduced me to Maracuyá (passion fruit), Granadilla, Lulo, Chontaduro, Zapote, & Tomate de Árbol 😍

You should try the fruits off a blue candle cactus. I hear it taste like blueberries and looks like bilberries. I actually bought two blue candle cacti from Amazon. Right now they're not old enough to produce any fruits. Hopefully they will one-day. Amazon will sell you four inch rooted blue candle cactus if you were to desire to care for cacti. Once you get into a growing hobby, it's almost impossible to stop buying more plants for my experience.

Borojo (both the fruit, and the small tree it grows on) looks _very_ similar to the Australia's "native Gardenia" _Atractocarpus fitzalanii_ which is also of the Rubiaceae, and said to be edible. I've never tried it, because the fruits always looked too hard and full of seeds to be worthwhile. But maybe I need to let it get soft and "overripe" like borojo?

Great episode! Do you think it would be worth growing? Years ago I had a ton of them in my greenhouse and they have very pretty leaves that look a bit like noni. I haven’t been able to fruit them and never replanted them after a freeze in the greenhouse. It has been 10+ years since I’ve tried the fruit and I remember it tasting like tamerind with hints of noni. Borojo is from rutaceae like coffee but is in a subgroup with many similar looking very poorly known fruits many with tamerind like traits like the excellent African Medlar/vangueria. The genus has a lot of random species that are unknown locally but I’ve seen them a few times in my travels. Last time I tried borojo I had a layover in NYC and while visiting the area we found some bororo juice in a stall. The vendor liked it’s juice and claimed it was great for mens health and libido.

Have you had Rubus Occidentalis before? Common name is black raspberry and it grows everywhere here in Ohio. Right now they're ripe so I'm eating a lot of it. They are my favorite fruit and are so much better than the wild blackberries which like to grow alongside them. The seeds are smaller than blackberries, which is nice. I prefer the sightly less ripe fruit because it's more firm and sour, but it's less sweet. Bugs also don't eat the unripe ones. Ripe ones are black, sweet, not sour at all, and squishy. They also often have the individual bits nibbled on by bugs. Wild blackberries have bigger, harder seeds and have some bitterness. They are pretty close to store bought blackberries. They also ripen way after the raspberries, aren't as common, don't make as much fruit, and aren't as sweet.

Growing up in Bogota Colombia in the 90's, it really was sort of an exotic thing for us, only ever saw migrants from coastal regions sell it or buy it. I don't think it ever was agreeable to most people's palates because every time I heard of someone drinking it, they'd add things like milk, moscato, raisins, rum, cloves and cinnamon. I always perceived it to being a bitter, pungent fruit, good to know that isn't the case!
