Great vid!!! I’ve had an L1 Compact. Opted to upgrade to the L1S w/ B2 Bass, but inevitably it was more than I needed (weight/carrying/sound). This L1 Pro 8 might be the perfect solution.

Yes I do feel from my A-B tests, the L1 Pro8 is more powerful. It seems louder and fuller, with more headroom than the Bose L1 Compact. I did a gig withe the L1 Pro8 for large resort caliber backyard wedding last Saturday. I had the Bose L1 Pro8 at Noon on the Volume and it was plenty.

I have been kicking through a pair of Bose L1 compacts for years now. I think I bought them the year that came out. I have used external mixers of all kinds with great results. I run them at 12:30 with no sub, a 15” TC Electronic BG250, or a JBL Eon 18” powered sub, depending on the gig, room, etc. Currently, I am running just the two compacts with an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar through a TC nova, a mic’d grand piano, two vocal mics, and backing tracks which include drums, bass, synthesizers, and other guitars. All of it goes through a sound craft notepad 124 FX running in stereo, unity gain structure, master at -5 db. The room is roughly 70 feet deep and 150 across, with a 35’ acoustic tile ceiling. The Bose are placed ~ 45’ apart to either side of the band and about 4-5’ behind the frontline. We use no monitors or guitar amps. It sounds amazing. We’re playing contemporary Christian music which, these days, can have a pretty big “wall of sound” approach. It’s not face-melting, but plenty loud and evenly dispersed across the room. Something that always delights me is when a particularly robust song is playing and the live instruments are all in, I step up to sing and the vocal comes out with such clarity and headroom. Careful coordination between the gain levels of live instruments, mics and track are very important when using the Bose to get the best results. If I had the $$ I would go even bigger, get the Tonematch and the Bose subs but, for what I’ve got and how well it’s working, I am totally satisfied!

Thanks for the review...it was a nice distraction while trying to plough my way through writing school reports! Great job. A question: We have a small band with vocals, keyboard with all manner of piano and synth sounds, a bass guitar and occasional electric for rock songs like Summer of '69. Would a speaker like this do the job for small gigs up to around a 100 people? At present we have a Yamaha STAGEPAS600BT 680W Portable PA System...but want to upgrade. Or should we should be look at the Pro16 instead? Or maybe not this style of speaker? Quite new to these kind of systems..thanks for any tips!

Hi Genaro, I tried combining an L1 Compact and an L1 Pro 8. It can work but it not nearly as good as a pair of matching speakers. I also used a Bose S1 Pro as an extension speaker for another area where I played and that works too. But nothing is better than a pair of matching speakers. The L1 Compact covers a longer and wider range than the small yet portable Bose S1 Pro. I hope this helps.

TLDR: Pro 8 is better in every way than the compact except two key areas. The pro 8 doesn’t come with a sleeve ($50 extra) and the compact is lighter and easier to set up (such a minor nitpick difference)

Those are fair comments for sure. I bought a studio slips cover with a pouch for my L1 Pro8. It’s much thicker than cheap ass flimsy Bose sleeve that costs $50 and has no pouch for a cable. Studio slips was however around $100 ish. But for me, worth it. I transport mine multiple times per week.

Which Martin and what Pickup are you using? With a great sounding guitar and good pickup (My favorite is LR Baggs Anthem), I do little processing if none at all. My Martin D18 with Baggs Anthem sounds very good straight in, using channel EQ or the EQ in the Bose T4S mixer. Any EQ I do however is minimal. I do use a little bit of reverb and I find that also helps. But just enough to keep the sound from being overly dry.

Just an FYI, if you are playing solo in smaller rooms, the Bose S1 pro is a great alternative to the L1 compact. It is battery powered, has built in reverb and Bluetooth. It’s obviously not as loud and full as the L1 but for a small room it works great IMO. It’s also super light and portable.

The recording may not translate the bass performance because KZitem Videos have compression and when I start pushing the Volume in the room, the mic on my recorder has a built-in Limiter to keep it from overloading. The Bose L1 Pro8 Sub is a significant upgrade from the Bose L1 Compact in the real world. I play 5 string bass through the L1 Pro8 and it sounds amazing in my duo gigs. The ToneMarch switch changes the center frequency on the bass and treble nobs to be more guitar friendly. Hey Gary. Thanks man. That was a very helpful (and well-done) comparison demo. I currently own the L1 Compact (which I like a lot), but find it sometimes a bit too bassy sounding. I use a loop pedal with my own pre-recorded backup tracks and just do strictly background instrumental guitar music. I just bought the S1 Pro a couple of weeks ago. Mind-blowing!! The channel EQ made all the difference in the world. I am a Taylor diehard. I am going to buy a second S1 so I can do the wireless stereo (or mono) thing. @@gair1944 Ya... the L1 Pro16 is $2369 at Long & McQuade in Canada ($1579 for the 8). A significant chunk of change, but worth every nickel. Once I close my insurance settlement, I will know whether or not I get the 16 or the 8. But I most definitely will get a second S1. Those little things are brilliant. I have been resident guitarist in an upscale restaurant/concert venue in Stratford Ontario, Canada for the last 6 months. (probably the only musician working so much these days!). This venue is a big old church in the heart of downtown and the room carries my volume throughout without my needing to be anywhere near loud. So, the one single S1 cuts the gig perfectly. I would get the second one for when we are back out in the (now-famous) gorgeous garden patio. So, I will be able to have the 2 S1s split up a bit and run Apple Music during my breaks. Gettin' good! I will at least get the L1 Pro8 for bigger (corporate) gigs and use the S1s as satellite speakers. I will sell the Compact. Cheers. Please keep us posted if you demo the 16. I also had the xlr thru run to a Harbinger MLS 900 as a second source. together they handle the bar easy at about 40% volume on the bose and the MLS. I had the gain structure on the mixer all set to unity. I like it. Lots of head room.

Hi Rob, I'm not sure how much better the new Bose would sound using your mixer. I think the Sub module is better than the L1 Compact and having 8 small drivers in the array tower section probably disperses a little better. I will do an outdoor comparison at some point. I kept my L1 Compact because it has been such a reliable usable tool. It could also serve as a great extension speaker if ever needed.

I kept the HTC after switching to an iPhone because they have some sort of levelizing compression that keeps the music sounding accurate and sweet (Within reason) without overloading the mic. I tried the next model HTC One M9 and it wasn't as good.

I have been using the L1 for about 15 years. I bought the pro 8 a couple of months ago and I am completely disappointed with the Pro. I lost all the dynamics. It does not matter if it sounds louder: compresses the peaks, no matter what gain, equ or volume you are at. Do you know if there is a way of getting rid of that "dynamic compressor"? It's funny they call it that way

I wonder if the L1 Pro 16 is more of a direct replacement for your former L1? To me the L1 Pro was an upgrade to the L1 Compact, but maybe not quite as capable as the L1. The L1 Pro 16 has more power across the range and I am guessing that might give you more dynamic range. For my needs, the L1 Pro8 or a pair of them as my duo and band uses are plenty.

Hi Don, Thanks for subscribing! You answered the question for me. The L1 Compact was the right tool for me for many years but it lacked some features I always wanted. The L1 Pro 8 delivers so much more with the APP, multiple Tonematch settings for each channel, Reverb for each channel, better more competent sub. It is an upgrade in every way and typically all I need. I flirt with the idea of trying the L1 Pro 16 at times just for the added drivers in the tower for more coverage. But the bass module is bigger and heavier and I really don't need that as a solo acoustic guitarist.

Hi Luis, Sorry for the late reply. The S1 Pro cannot compete with this. I own an S1 Pro and have sometimes reached its power and volume limitations. The S1 Pro is great when used within its self imposed limitations due to simple 'physics'. It can only move so much air or play so loud before the low end overwhelms the speaker. I don't typically push that hard. I mostly use the S1 Pro as a Monitor along with my L1 Pro 8 as my main PA directed to the audience.
