NATO troops stood ready to counter any further violence in the northern Bosnian town of Brcko on Friday (29/08) following a night of rioting against the international peacekeepers. In one of the most serious incidents involving NATO peacekeepers since the Bosnian war ended, hundreds of Bosnian Serb hardliners pelted S-FOR troops with rocks, forcing them to retreat from a police station. Attacks on multinational troops took place in several northern towns and were thought to be ordered by Serb hardliners opposed to western backing for embattled Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic. Meanwhile, Karadzic supporters joined a rally in Obudovac on Thursday night.
