My one consistent problem with Pete's demos is that he could be playing a cigar box guitar into a pedal that was literally crafted from goose turds and it'd sound better than me on my best day. That being said, it's always good to have something to aspire to.

I actually traded in my Kemper and the Iridium for this unit, and I have no regrets about it whatsoever. What I truly appreciate about it is how seamlessly it integrates with a pedal board, utilizing the stereo effects send and return. Additionally, I love how it models two cabinets, distributing the sound to a DI into my iPad for recording in stereo using 'Loopy Pro' or 'Cubasis,' or directly into my PC for recording in my preferred DAW, which has been Ableton Live for the past 15 years. The Kemper and, to some extent, the Iridium, led to some of my beloved pedals being stowed away in their boxes. All you really need for live recording is a good tone, and the IR 200 provides a wide range of high-quality sounds that can in effect make your electric and acoustic guitars, bass, sitars, kalimbas, mandolins, ouds, bazoukas, harps and autoharps sound awesome.

Back in the mid 90s I bought a thing called a Boss guitar monitor tm-7. It’s like a analogue utility box that can be run with headphones, has a built in amp sim which was notoriously bad sounding..pure transistor harshness like smokey amp, but it sounded pretty good with boss pedal in send/return. Had not thought of it in decades, but came across it while rummaging through old boxes of my crap the other day. A light bulb hit me, maybe the tm-7 amp just needed a cab sim IR..yes, tested it today and it sounds way better with a cab sim vst. I now love this thing, its my new secret weapon....great now they have IR 200..only took them 27 years to come up with the companion device for the tm-7 ;) lol. I’m so getting this new one. I love oddball boss stuff..it’ll become classic one day.

Great vid Pete! For me, Boss is a brand I trust ... I've used their products for the last 43 years or so ... very reliable. I had a very bad experience with a TONEX Pedal I purchased early this year: The first pedal they shipped out was physically defective, and the next two replacements had software problems. Owing that pedal for 6 months, I wasn't able to use it much ... waiting for tech support to do their job and then eventually giving up completely. I am considering other alternatives to the TONEX Pedal, and I do trust the Boss Brand, I am just not sure that I will be satisfied with the tone and feel that this pedal will have. I can definitely live and work without an amp modeler .... I have a great speaker cab modeler (BluBox). It's undeniable that this pedal would add a huge amount of flexibility to my gigs.

@@ArvidNielsen Cool! I've got the IR-200, and I'm always curious about how others set up their tones. I feel like I don't know everything, and it's good to get some inspiration from other people, but there are not many resources out there. Actually, I would use the GT-1000 core as a pedal platform myself, which is a cool coincidence. Who knows, I might try one out myself. I think I can actually rent one for a few days; there's this app in Sweden that people use to rent out their power tools and such things, which is really cool, because if you just need a drill for a small project, you don't have to buy one yourself and have it laying around, you just rent one for a couple of hours, and it'll cost you maybe ten bucks. Some people have music equipment in the app like that. We'll see what happens. 😄

Great overview of the IR 200. But with regard to using this like an effects pedal into an amp. What’s the best way to do this i.e. won’t the particular amp you’re using possibly modify the True Tone of the various IRs in the IR 200? Should I bypass the preamp by using the return input? Or am I over thinking it?
@georgeshedden5700
2 жыл бұрын
Ok. Did some studying last night. Consensus seems to be that to use this effectively through an amp and address my concern is to use a FRFR speaker/amp. Or if using a guitar amp, to not use cab sims and only use the preamp portion of amp models. Doing otherwise may produce some funky tones. Of course one can always experiment.

I am a new IR 200 owner. Mr Thorn I don't understand how you ran the Top Hat via the Suhr Reactive load into the IR 200. Hope you or someone else can enlighten me on this issue. @PeteThorn

Well there’s a number of different things you can do with this box. Number one, this makes amplifier and speaker sounds, with reverb… you could literally just plug headphones into it and play and have a cool guitar sound. But you can also use any of those things independently in it. So there are times when maybe you only want to use the speaker cabinet modeling, let’s say. In the video when you see me add the pedal with my acoustic guitar, I’m using an impulse response of an acoustic guitar body within the pedal to make my acoustic guitar sound more natural. So that’s another use. It’s hard to explain everything this can do but it serves many purposes. My first explanation is probably the way most people would use this.
