This is the 4 cable method with effects pedals in the chain as well, I’ve got my first noise gate (KMA Pylon) coming in the mail Thursday and I did my research, it’s surprisingly hard to find that many videos on KZitem that accurately describe the 4 cable method with a noise suppressor and an amp with an Fx loop along with hooking it up with pedals that go into the front of the amp as well as FX loop pedals. Nice job!

@brianleechee

So happy it helped! Hm, I've never tried that! But I would guess...if it was in the front of the return, the tone you want will be shaped by the pre-amp, then affected by the effects pedals after...if it was in the rear, your tone would be affected by the effects lol, then you can shape the tone after it's already been altered by whatever effects you have. I was under the impression that the NS2 using the X setup I talk about here, was gating both the front and the Loop which is the point of the X setup. Try it in different places in the loop and lmk how it works for you! Same with the preamp! Thanks for watching!

@brianleechee
5 ай бұрын
Wow! The U.K. that's amazing! Glad it helped! I've always heard that compressors go pretty early on into the chain. Like tuner, wah, compressor. Because you want the wah to affect the signal directly, and the compressor to balance the wahed tone. But you don't want to compressor squishing your overdrives, and distortions. You want the comp to level out the dynamics of the cleanest part of your guitar, then your effects are affecting the balanced compressed tone and not BEING compressed if you put it after them. So yeah! Like you want your signal to hit that wah and be aggressively affected and wahed out right? So you don't compress the signal then hit the wah. You hit the wah, then the comp should balance and tighten the tone, then everything else after is affecting the compressed balanced tone instead of being compressed and weakened. Hope that helps!

Just my opinion but I would put the metal zone and whah within the send return of your noise suppressor and output it from that to the amp and then use the send an return from your amp for your phaser and delay. You could then use a foot switch for your amp to toggle them on or off.

Your threshold may be to high! I'll answer in a bit when I get home
@brianleechee
8 ай бұрын
Ok, the Marshall JVM 410 has 2 FX loops. Use my process on the 1st one labeled "Serial/Parallel Fx Loop". To the right of that is a dry/wet knob. All the way left, you'll get pure guitar tone and no Fx heard even if they're engaged. The further right you turn this knob, the more your FX will be blended in to your original guitar tone. Too much of an effect can potentially drown your guitar tone out and make it perceiveably quieter, so make sure the tone isn't drowned out by the effects. Now, this I found interesting. To the right of the Dry/Wet knob, there is a pad switch. If its pushed in, it will reduce your level by...ready for this...-10dB. Could explain your 10% loss in volume! If you press it again and its sticking out, there should be a +4dB boost in the signal so...idk if that'll actually make your guitar louder than the original guitar signal or what, but I'd say that could be the culprit. That, or the threshold on the NS-2 is too high and you need to roll it back a bit. I hope that helps! Let me know if it works for you or not, I'm curious!
@castelgandfolfo5820

@brianleechee
2 ай бұрын
@TANMAN47TANMAN I'd say go into the input of the NS-2, out the send, through your pedal chain and into the front of the amp. This puts all your pedals pre preamp. So your amp settings will affect the tone of everything that comes before it but I think the noise suppressor should still knock out some unwanted noise, just don't crank it to max because you then may lose the tonal qualities of everything thereafter :)

@brianleechee
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad it helped! Hm, you may want to turn the Decay knob clockwise to taste. The Decay knob controls how quickly the supressor kicks in to eliminate noise. If it's too far left, it will kick in very early/fast. This results in a loss of attack and some tone because it's activating basically as soon as it hears anything at all lol! Whereas if you turn the decay clockwise, it will kick in slower/later, so you get the attack you want and some sustain, less loss of tone, and then it kicks in to squash the unwanted noise during the silences, rests and sustained notes you want, as opposed to kicking in while you play and squishing your tone and messing up your playing. So like, if you're playing and the red LED is glowing a little, that means the suppression is activating while you're playing or its activating too instantaneously. So, nudge it down to taste so it's not suppressing your attack/actual playing. The threshold knob controls how MUCH noise is suppressed or not. So, if its turned counter clockwise, more noise is allowed through. This is ok if you like some noisy feedback and fuzz coming through for dirty tones, punk, metal noisy stuff. But if you want clean pure notes and silence when you're not playing, turn it clockwise for less noise. If threshold is too far clockwise, however, it is less forgiving on what is allowed through. Meaning even your guitar's sound is being somewhat suppressed. So, if it's too high, nudge it counter clockwise until you are getting pure guitar tone. Then when you rest, or stop playing, you'll hear what the decay knob is doing. Adjust that until it let's enough sustain go through without kicking in too early, and finally kicks in when you want absolute silence. In this demo I had the threshold MAXED to kick in for like any sound going through, and the decay as instant as possible so it would just instantly clamp down ASAP, so as to demonstrate the max power of the NS-2. I hope that helped!

The Wah should be first in the loop. You have it so any Wah noise is considered part of the clean guitar signal. The Noise gate cannot help any of the the wah noise up with the tuner input side.
@brianleechee
3 жыл бұрын
Well, I wanted it to be first in front of the amp because I use my amps clean channel. So it allows me to wah my clean. I've experimented with it in the FX loop, and it only serves as a volume pedal when I do that. The sweep like slightly wahs, but mostly cuts and boosts volume. So I put it in front. Since the distortion is in front, as well, I can wah the distortion and the clean AND get pure and clean effects from whatevers in the loop. Fortunately, the wah doesnt make any noise. When the NS-2 is on, it's like dead silent. Check out my 2nd video demonstrating the effectiveness of this setup here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pKZpqYysoWOZqmk It's not end all be all. Everyones different but this worked out splendid for me
@philliphelbig579
Жыл бұрын
Your setup is correct, but you explain it wrongly. The signal path is NS-2 input, NS-2 send, distortion, amp in (which goes to the preamp), preamp out, NS-2 return, NS-2 output, phaser, delay, poweramp in. So you have the distortion and the preamp in the loop (between send and return) of the NS2. It will suppress noise created by the things on that loop. It is correct to have the delay outside the loop, as you don’t want the fade-out created by the delay to be suppressed. (I would also put the wah and the phaser in the loop, but that is a side issue.)
@brianleechee
Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the insight! This was definitely a first attempt at this method for me. When I figured it out, and it worked, I was like oh my GOD the amp is SILENT! Because the amp was just incessantly buzzing! Now, I will say, I tried the wah in the Loop and it began to serve as some kind of volume control or weird high end filter and didnt actually wah, so I took it out. And no, my delay is IN the FX Loop and is unaffected by the NS-2 as far as my delay trails being squashed. I get endless repeats haha! So the wah and distortion are before the pre-amp because I wasn't getting a desired result with the dist. In the Loop. So it just serves as a channel switch between clean and dostistored honestly. However, since its after the NS-2, I don't hear the pedal click on. The amp is entirely silent ni matter what I turn on and off. Then I play and I get pure tone! Check out the other video where I demonstrate the effectiveness of the setup! But yeah admittedly I was a neophyte at this when I filmed over a year ago. Just wanted to share what I learned at that time :) Thanks again for the constructive insight!!

Excellent. I have a noisegate with a send return and every other video was confusing. Thanks. Does the order of modulation and time effects matter? Delay last after reverb? I have phaser, chorus, flanger, reverb, delay and a cab sim pedal.
@brianleechee
3 жыл бұрын
@@allboutthemojo So, generally, if you're going from right to left, the way I did in the video, a safe way to begin is to like this: Guitar into Tuner Tuner to Wah Wah to Noise Gate input Noise Gate send to Distortion/OD/Fuzz Distortion to amp input. Unless it's a pre-amp pedal, in which case it goes first in the FX loop. In the FX loop, folks tend to go: Modulation (Phaser, flanger, chorus) Time based (delay, tremolo) Reverb This way, like a train, your signal gets modulated first like "bwow" Then it gets hit with delays so your "bwow" repeats like "Bwow bwow bwow bwow" Then that gets hit with the reverb "bwowwwww bwowwwww bwowww bwowwww" Nice and spacey! I however prefer the sound of my Phaser right after distortion, not in my FX loop. so that's where I have it. Then, I have delay and a new reverb pedal (not in this video) in FX loop! Hope that helped!
@brianleechee
3 жыл бұрын
@@allboutthemojo Oh, for your particular order...I may go, cab sim first, chorus 2nd, phase and flange are interchangeable for 3rd and 4th. Do you want a phased signal to be flanged after? Or do you want a flanged signal to be phased after? Lol or maybe you don't combine them but use them 1 at a time. Then it doesnt matter. Maybe whichever you want to be stronger goes first? Then Delay 5th and reverb last. But tone is to the taste of the listener my friend! Mix em around a bit and find where you like them once you have the standard order locked down. I play it safe myself and keep it pretty straightforward.

@@brianleechee yeah I'm not into any experimental sounds. I have the pedals that I think I need to get close enough to some of the music I like to play. About the distortion pedal being a pre amp or not, how do I know that? I have a diezel vh4-2 pedal. I still want that along with my overdrive pedal, wah and compressor to hit the front of the amp right?
@brianleechee
3 жыл бұрын
@@allboutthemojo Ok this will be a long answer lol. So, upon reading a quick blurb about the vh4-2 on Google, it appears to be a pre-amp. So that goes into your FX loop. But that is also something I would explore in front of the amp AND in loop and see what you like best. I have the, much reviled, yet beloved Metal Zone. I love it in front of my amp. Not in the loop. Others beg to differ. I have found that my wah really has a nice, pure affect on my distortion when it goes before the distortion, in the front of the amp. Now, the thing is, say you are going from your guitar to the vh4-2 pedal in front, to the clean channel of your amp. So guitar, pedal, amp input. You hit the pedal to activate the distortion, you hit it again to go back to clean right? Thing is, you can set your clean to where you like it, but the pedal in front of the amp will also be colored by the settings in your clean channel! So like if you enjoy scooped mids with distortion, but more mids on clean, bringing your mids up on your clean channel will also bring up the mids on your distortion, thus forcing you to lower the mids on the pedal. So the amp settings will color the pedal settings in front, and you have to compensate and compromise. But a pre-amp goes in the FX loop. It serves as it's own EQ and is NOT colored by the amp settings. It "bypasses" the amps "pre-amp" section (the EQ section, bass, mid, treble etc) You get the raw pedal's intended tone and the desired clean from your amp separately. So if you like the pedals natural effect/tone, go for FX loop. That tone comes from the pedal and out the speakers. If you want to be able to tweak the pedals natural effect, put it in front, and you can use the eq of the amp to fine tune the tone, but it will then affect what your clean sounds like so be mindful! The Metal Zone has a funny treble tone that I can't get rid of using the pedal alone. But since I put it in front of my amp, I can dial back the treble on the amp and it helps get that sound dont enjoy out of there. A little fine tweaking and I can get both the clean and distorted tones I like. Found a little sweet spot. As far as the overdrive you have. Maybe try it after the VH4? This way it works as a boost or enhancement to the VH4. The VH4 is the meat, and the OD is the seasoning :P. Or try it vice versa! See what you like :)
