Let's talk about Boston Bruins vs Florida Panthers Game 3 of the 2024 Stanle Cup Playoffs Round 2, which saw a controversial inteference call nearly derail the game.
I understand getting annoyed about a potentially dodgey call, but you can't win a gane with 8 shots across 2 periods. If I was a Bruins fan, that's what I'd be the most outraged about.

Boston would've gone on the P-play for holding where they have an increased chance to score. They then scored 2 goals to go down 2-4 (would be 2-3 (likely) or 3-3 because Florida scored on the Lauko penalty) Boston gave up an empty netter for the 5th goal which maybe never happens if this call is correct. Either way Boston played like trash. Can't get 8 shots in 2 periods and expect to win a game. That being said, when you see a call like this you have to point at it and say wtf. There were a couple of other iffy calls I but can't completely hate on them like I can with this one. Mason Lohrei completely screwed the Bruins like usual as well. Bruins D-Core has been awful since game 2. Bruins are looking like they did in G5 and G6 against Toronto. As a Bruins fan, it does make me mad when they play like this. But to ignore officiating THIS bad would be criminal. Would be a tough to win but still possible to win game.

And yet, of the 4 North American major sports, hockey officiating is now the best. The NFL officiating has become ridiculous, the NBA is downright awful (although it might get better a bit now that the Lakers are out), and MLB umpiring has been a joke for years now (are you listening Angel Hernandez, C.B. Bucknor?). Hockey has the best officials of the 4 major sports....I never thought I'd see the day when I'd say that. Ever since they renovated the away dressing room in the garden, there’s been no advantage to the home team. Change was about 2 years ago btw. Look at the Bruins. Losing on home ice tonight, game 2 and 5 vs Toronto, losing vs Florida at home last year, etc. Look at the Celtics. Losing the finals to the Warriors and last year to the Miami Heat at home. This year they are 3-2 so far at home in the playoffs. They went 37-4 in the regular season at home, should be noted. Duncan Robinson, a Miami Heat basketball player, said the conditions before the dressing room renovation were awful, and now (I’ve been in there personally on a tour) it looks much more open and up to date. I mean you’d want it to be, but the Bruins and Celtics used to always have amazing home advantage before the new garden opened.

Really hate the argument of “Can’t complain about refs when the team played bad anyway”. They are two completely separate issues. The reffing throughout the playoffs have been atrocious, so much so that I think there should be a completely overhaul/reconstruction of how reffing works in the game. Either that or find a way for refs to be more accountable for bad/missed calls. Either challenging the calls during the game or even a post game with the officials. If people at the arena and at home can make a call better than the officials themselves, that’s a big problem.

One call doesn't a game make. While it was a questionable call in the minds of many ref said play on. You can't assume the Bruins would have scored any goals in that span or any other span for that matter. There is one reason the Bruins aren't doing better. They aren't scoring goals and the reason they aren't scoring goals or more goals is they aren't shooting the puck enough. The standard I have always gone by is 30 a game. If you get 30 shots on goal a game and lose so be it but at least you tried. Through the first 3 games of this series the Bruins have been outshot 105 to 61. Still they only got 29 shots on goal in game 1. At point in the third when the Bruins finally got a shot on goal it was mentions it was their first in over 14 minutes of play The Bruins are tired, they weren't built for a deep playoff run. But I can tell you this will be a short series and end in FL in game 5 if the Bruins don't find a way to shoot the puck more, a whole lot more. And before you start calling me names, I am a life long Bruins fan. I still have the Boston Record American Paper from this day 52 years ago celebrating the goal SHOOT the Puck it is the only way you have a chance to win the game BTW Eck. Love your videos

The refs have been using poor criterion for calling penalties for about 5 years now. They'll actually have cap space this offseason so they can put together a real team next year instead of being forced to fill out the roster with scrap heap guys like they had to this year. Hopefully, they get some real goddamn centers because coyle and zacha have been dead weight in this playoff run.

I told my son 2 months ago they were imposters and would get the crap kicked into them in the playoffs. They were only high in the standings because they had a lot of OT losses which got them points. But they were still LOSSES.

This has been happening a lot this season. Give up 8 or more shots than you take. There was a stretch Where Swayman had better or equal numbers than his opponent and lost just because they took ten more shots. Most teams elevate their game for the playoffs Bruins have not and even look flat.

The call wouldn’t have changed the game, by any stretch. I do just want to know what Lauko is supposed to do on that situation? He was being directed towards the goalie and had no way of changing course. Feel like it should have been a minor for holding and a minor for goalie interference, that would have been fair.

bruins played like garbage all night long, but some of the calls were downright dog shit, to the point where the dude next to me took off his jersey and threw it off the bannister .. bruins need to step the fuck up. and the calls ned to stop being so one sided its grotesque, either way cant win a hockey game with 8 shots in 2 periods, but right when bruins came out in the 2nd with momentum peppering bob they called a 4 minute and we gave 2 goals it was fucking absolute mayham. ... td garden is never quiet and tonight we were fucking silent for a majority of the game cant win a series looking like that on the ice.

Here's the thing, was it the right call? Technically yes. Should it have been called? Probably not. But did it actually impact the outcome of the game? No, you can't win a game when you're being out shot 3:1, and it was 3-0 Florida at this moment

I'm praying on Boston's downfall, but that call was ATROCIOUS. If that call were to have shifted a tight game from one side to the other, I would be outraged too. But they were playing horrible, and even if the call went against the panthers, that game was not within their reach. I do understand the frustration from the fans, but that was not worth delaying the game.

That was a really bad call by the ref. The FL player should have been the one to have a penalty against them. The Bruins player had no way to change where he was going with the FL player holding him like that. The refs do need to answer for those types of calls after the game, just like the players and the coaches do in front of the media.

I fully agree, and it’s something I’d love to see as well, but then there should be some changes to the system, as well as fan mentality. It’s an overtly complex situation but the best way I can describe it is players and coaches are “public figures” and their paychecks reflect that. So start off by paying refs more if they are to hold press conferences and be constantly criticized even more so. Second, is the fan mentality. I’d hear in media sometime especially for more variable sports like baseball and basketball “this player had a bad shooting game”, or “this player is on a slump and hasn’t gotten a hit in 3 games” etc. You’d also see hockey players missing wide open nets every once in a while. These supposedly “routine” plays that pro sports players mess up sometimes even though they practice them every day seem to be much more easily forgiven by the media and fans than when an official is in the wrong spot/has a bad angle, or has a brain fart, especially with how fast paced games are up close. People go “how did the ref miss that” when they’re watching from a Birds Eye view camera angle or especially slowmo, so I hope if this does happen in the future that people can be a bit more understanding that refs are human too, just like the players. It absolutely frustrates me as a fan when refs screw up and I used to think I could do a much better job, so I tried it, and it’s HARD. It absolutely opened my eyes and I feel like a lot of fans/players/coaches need to try it out at some level to gain some insight. I agree with you, it was a terrible call, and this thing you’re suggesting is awesome since it’ll allow the fans to understand what they were thinking at the time (I was genuinely curious what the ref was saying to the Bruins coach). Sorry for this being long, I really do like your take, but I know from experience this issue isn’t black/white and it wouldn’t be fair to put refs under even more of a spotlight when I genuinely believe they’re already one of the most abused professions to my knowledge

I'm not a Bruins fan but this non call is typical of the crappy officiating in professional sports in general. It's not about who deserves to win (not that the Bruins deserved to win this game) it's more about who they think should win to promote the sport. Games are managed by the league.

The officiating aside Florida more then deserved to win this game. That being said these officials should have no shot at moving on beyond this series. You can make shit up because you feel like it and that is exactly what this imaginary call is. I would love to see a different angle on the collision that injured Marchand to see if what has been suggested is true or not. That Bennet sucker punched him leading with the but end of his stick. Yes it isn't an easy job and it is a fast game but there is simply no excuse for calls like the one made here because there is nothing to back up the ruling. Till they are ever held accountable nothing will ever get better. They seem to want to be noticeable and way too involved in games. If it had been 1-1 at the time this would still be called when it should never be.
