The Fifth & Liquor Bottle Sizes People started saying a fifth of liquor because that was the standard bottle size. Liquor was measured in gallons, and one-fifth of a gallon simply became a fifth. In the late 19th century, some stores in the US sold bottles that were called quarts but actually contained less than that
@grantwagliardo2291

We use quart and liter interchangeably at the liquor store I work at.
@Skiplives
Жыл бұрын
A quart is 54 ml shy of a liter ( about as much as a healthy shot) and a fifth of a gallon is 757 ml or 7 ml less than your typical 750ml bottle. So the metric bottles fit right into the existing US imperial bottle sizes. Though when I worked in a liquor store in the 80s we stocked both for some brands.
1L bottles are usually a better price by volume than a 1/5.

I can field this… 50 or so years ago, alcohols in the U.S. were sold in dozens of different sizes, depending on the distillery or country of origin. Way more sizes than today. Some of these sizes were only different than others by a few ounces or milliliters, with mixes of imperial and metric of all sizes. This caused major headaches with everyone involved in the spirits industry. Mostly, it was a headache for the US government, who had to track the amount of alcohol sold by the distilleries and bought by liquor stores. The U.S. government decided on specific standard sizes that are metric. 1.75L, 1.0L, 750mL, 375mL, 200mL, 100mL, and 50mL. What remained was the vocabulary that people used to describe these bottles, because half gallon, fifth, pint and half pint roll off the tongue better than reading out the metric size.

For everyone curious my understanding of where the term "Fifth" came from is that 750ml is roughly 1/5 of a Gallon so its persumably an American measurement

Here in Australia we sell 50ml, 250ml, 750ml and 1L bottles. Alcohol is higher priced here because of taxes so the 750ml bottles are typically the normal size for most bottles in a shop, with 1L bottles typically available for products that are high sellers. We don't have any larger sizes available in bottle shops normally; but you can find novelty sizes in duty free stores at airports.

1.75 is usually the best bang for your buck, especially for cheap bottom shelf brands. 1 liters can be a decent bargain because they tend to be same price as a 750ml, depending on the brand.

So fun fact. 750ml is called a Fifth because it is (roughly) 1/5 of a gallon (750mlx5 is 3,750ml & 1 gallon is 3785.41ml). Back in the late 19th century 1/5 of a gallon was the legal threshold for individual commercial alcohol sales. Anything more had to be bought and sold wholesale.

Cyberchase had an episode teaching us this too. Remember when they'd like commercial cut from the cartoon to the black girl or the white guy with glasses and they'd teach us something by asking weird questions? They taught volume by showing how different shaped baby bottles all had the same amount of liquid. They also taught square fottage by asking "how many sleeping bags can fit is x by x room?" To find out how many friends can come to the sleepover. They got the exact number but everybody was shoulder to shoulder because they didn't account for walking space 😂😂 i miss cyberchase

A lot of states won't allow bars and restaurants to purchase spirits over 1L. As a fellow Floridian who had spent nearly a decade as a purchaser of food and beverage for a hotel chain, I have seen almost exclusively 1L bottles for domestic spirits.
