Great video but in fairness most people who get the BBE... use the built in grinder. Using a Niche which costs more than the BBE isnt a fair comparison. I learned how to use my machine with the built-in grinder and adjusting the tup inner burr as well a the main grind selector. Thats what others had me do to learn. I have a SGP but try to stay with the built in. SO that would have helped define the bottomless vs spouted. The spouted is heaver, hence it does hold heat more as the coffee flows out. So far im finding that the stock basket prefers 17Grams, not 18 and with a palm leveler/tamper. Im consistent every time with a bottomless PF...... shot after shot. A new bean comes in and takes me at most 2 shots to adjust the grinder and thats it. everything else is the same.

Great review! I've been looking into purchasing a bottomless portafilter only because it's the only style i can find(that will fit my machine) that is sold with a wooden handle. I really want to add some wood elements/tools to my coffee bar. I'm wanting to upgrade from the cheapy portafilter my Calphalon TempIQ came with; but unfortunately there are not many options that are made to fit that machine. Great tips to consider for my future purchase!

ahh I see. Yeah I do agree with you on the part that wooden accents does add a nice touch. But just keep in mind the down side of the bottomless. Though if you feel that you are ready for one, I would say buy a generic one and give it a shot to see if it's for you.

So basically the bottomless portafilter not only unnecessary but doesn’t have any advantages other than seeing the quality of your prep work

Yes, the main point of the bottomless is to check your work. Other than that it can also potentially help you share you coffee with your machine, counter top and floor lol.

On top of that, entry-level machines don't have any type of heat regulation for the portafilter or grouphead. A bottomless portafilter equals less thermal Mass to take away from the heat of the water going through the puck so you can pull fewer blank shots the heat everything up. I have a Breville Bambino plus, an extremely capable machine but you have to pull at least two or three shots to get the stock stainless dual spouted portafilter up to temperature (I, like everybody else removed the plastic insert because I don't want plastic there for one and I don't want to have to keep digging it out to clean my portafilter when coffee gets under it). One blank shot to heat up the thermojet, water path and the basket and just pop it out, wipe it dry with a clean cloth, dumped in my ground coffee (got a Niche for an extremely simple workflow) tamp and go! It's awesome!

Thanks for watching! The lid and the tamper is actually from St. Anthony Industry. If you don't actually need it to be attached to the machine, I recommend getting their normal tamper, as it's heavier for the same price. Just note that it's 0.3mm (corrected) wider.

First of all, I’m new to your channel and maybe you’ve mentioned it in another video but why are you using the Niche and not the Breville’s grinder? Is the Breville grinder not good? Would the Breville Infusor be the better machine to use?
@XICups
3 жыл бұрын
Hey, welcome to the channel! The built in grinder on the Breville is a great place to start, as I have used it for many years in the beginning. However the Niche gives much more consistent grinds and more importantly close to no retention (you get out pretty much what you put in.) This is important in keeping your drinks consistent. I am still working on a full review, but I went over the reason for the Niche in this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1m-ZsKF_bKeapXo So basically if you have the budget in the beginning I would say to just go ahead and get the infuser along with the Niche, it's a great combo. I just happened to use the barista express for 3 years before getting the Niche as an upgrade. Hope this answers the question. Thanks for checking out the channel!!!
@chicoramos2697
3 жыл бұрын
@@XICups I kind of figured that. I was considering the Express but am a little worried about all in one units considering that one of the two could stop working. I was thinking about getting the Infuser and smart grinder pro. I could upgrade the grinder and just use the smart grinder pro for pour over and French press. BTW, really enjoying your channel. 👍🏼
@XICups
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah thats the set up that my friend ended up going. So far I have had the Barista Express for 5 years without any issue (knock on wood) so take that how you will. The smart grinder works pretty good, but just make sure that you measure your doses as the retention can be a bit unpredictable.
@XICups
3 жыл бұрын
Also, I did a first time set up video on the smart grinder pro. Its in my contents if you want to check it out. last thing I would add is that there are some concerns regarding the longevity of the grinder, however in this price range there isn't really another capable grinder for espresso aside from the Baratza Preciso. At least not without increasing the budget for the DF64, at which point I would honestly just save a bit and go for the Niche if you can. But please keep in mind down the line, the grinder is likely going to be the first thing you will think about upgrading, so the generally advise would be to get the correct grinder now. (hope this comment isn't too long winded lol)

How come the temperatures are so low?
@XICups
3 жыл бұрын
The default brewing temperature of the machine is about 195-200 degrees at the group head, the test I did would not be an accurate indication of the brewing temperature as the liquid would have cooled a lot by the time it entered the cup, especially at such a low volume. My point of the test is to show that there isn't as much of a shot temperature difference between the two portafilters. Hope this answer helps.

I've been using the same basket with bottomless portafilter and I'm getting different results. I need to grind finner for bottomless. Is that make any sense?
@XICups
3 жыл бұрын
Finer is definitely one of the possible reason. However each roast have different densities, so assuming you are using the same bean and getting different results, I would start with making sure that there are enough grinds in the basket. Even though the IMS is rated on Amazon for 18 grams, with lighter coffee I find that I have to use 22-23 in order to get good results. Now with that said, I would then adjust the grinds for desired yield. At the same time I do recommend that you do some sort of even distribution like the WDT, it will help with the bottomless extraction. Hope this helps.
@miloshzhupac

@@XICups Yes it's lighted roasted and I'm being using 18gr. Thanks for letting me know, I will try to increase the dose first. Im already using WDT. Keep up with the good work ;)
@XICups

@@miloshzhupac Great! Actually one more thing would add is if you are using the stock basket from Breville, it is rated for 18 grams. However with some really light roast coffees, they tend to be quite a bit denser, so try increasing it to 18.5-19 grams first to try and find the sweet spot. Of course I have also case across beans that are really airy and light when I finish grinding them and 18 grams just wouldn't fit in the portafilter. In that case, you want to try to go much finer than normal. Again just try to adapt to the specific bean that you use.

How does the spoon make a difference to taste?
@XICups
3 жыл бұрын
To be honest with you, I don't know for sure. It's something that people do to fix the bitterness when using the bottomless portafilter. My theory is the slightly prolonged contact time with the air. But the taste is noticeable.

Actually in general different metal can alter the taste of food and drinks. However in this case it's a trick that people use to alter the taste of the shot, like I stated in the video, not everyone will notice a difference (different beans, extraction ratio etc.) but I still want to at least provide the information for those that want to know.
