@whatsBF3
3 жыл бұрын
do you think this might apply to second gens also? I replaced the alternator didn't help, have a 2000 that only when its cold (anything under 45-50F degrees) it will charge at 14 volts for a few seconds then drop to 13 for a few more, then back to 14 volts and so on, after idling for 10-15 minutes then drive does it stabilize at 14 volts, maybe after it warms up the sensor is within adjustment and needs slightly adjusted?
@decentgarage
3 жыл бұрын
@@whatsBF3 I'm much less familiar with second gens but what you are describing sounds like it's just the grid heaters cycling which is completely normal. They will cycle and cause the voltage to fluctuate until the truck gets up to temp.
@whatsBF3
3 жыл бұрын
@@decentgarage hmm okay, when i got the truck this year in february, they had taken off the ground for grid heater probably for a reason i put a turbo and 150 over injectors in never had a problem starting when it was negative outside so might just unhook it so it doesn't kill alternator flocculating unless you think it will be fine, i'm pretty mechanically inclined but not huge into diesels 🤷♂️
@decentgarage
3 жыл бұрын
@@whatsBF3 If it is the grid heaters cycling (which I bet it is) it is not harmful at all and I would just leave it. Most people who are new to 12 valves see that and think there is something wrong but it is totally normal.

One thing I like on my 2013 Super Duty is the manual/automatic hubs. They work without locking them in 90% of the time but if you ever have a brain fart and get completely immobilized stuck in 2 wheel drive, you can lock the hubs manually where regular automatic hubs would just leave you stuck. Congrats on your first gen. I can tell you really like it.

You would be surprised. Try to find a smaller car dealer that is willing to sell trade-ins to the public before auctioning them off. I have bought many a running vehicle that have absolutely no issues for ~$500, including older pickups like this one. Most trade ins get auctioned for pennies on the dollar that they are worth because the dealer doesn't think it worth the time to fix it themselves.

Regarding your charging problem, install a 70\80's vintage standard voltage regulator and bypass the factory wiring running the charge wire direct to the battery ( min. of a 6 ga. ) and add a volt gauge to monitor the charge voltage. Keep the fuseable link to protect the chassis wiring. ,

@Itsa_Mea
3 жыл бұрын
That era the voltage regulation for the alternator was PCM controlled. Back in the 90s I use to convert them over to the old external regulator that you mount to the firewall. It's been awhile but if I remember right the green wire at the alternator is the wire you run to the external regulator and bypass the PCM. I'm going by 25 years ago memory so check a wiring diagram. On edit: I see the tach signal was missing. You can also check alternator by full fielding the alternator with the green wire.

Pro tip guys: If you have your insurance fixing anything on your Cummins, make sure to claim everything you can! Made the mistake recently of telling mine that they didn't need to include some things on my 3rd gen. I was worried about them totalling it out... In the end, they told me it didn't even get close to totalled and I can't add that stuff back on 🤬 If they tell you it's officially totalled, then tell them to take things off (cosmetic of course) until it's just under totalled!
