A Friend picked up this 4x4 toyota tacoma that was parked 5 years ago do to run issues. lets see how it has aged since then as we try to bring it back to life.
a friend of mine had an old ford tempo that wouldn't shift she was a single mother and really depended on it for everything, she had called the junk yard to come and get it and i was over looking at it before they came and found the plastic cap dry rotted and came off so i took a soda can tab off a can and used it to hold the connector on the ball and drove it around the block so it worked until the new piece came i put that on and she drove it for another 10 years until she got the volvo

I really miss my Ford Tempo, should never have sold it. The only thing wrong with it was the right rear door window wouldn't work (power windows), everything else on that car worked great. I somehow got 42mpg with it on a 300 mile trip in the middle of summer with the AC on....I didn't know those cars did that well on gas, but after making the same trip several times and got within 1-2mpg of it I came to realize they were much more economical than I thought.

He left me an old DOHC honda 750 that I am currently rebuilding. I really hope that one day you will do a video on a motorcycle with 4 carbs and DOHC. Great video guys. I have an 09 Tacoma Sport, much like the one you have here. I had some of the same issues you had here. The shifter on mine is an issue if the truck sits for to long. Gets very stiff and doesn't always line up with the gear it's supposed to. You handled that issue very well. Another problem I had was the wheels. I had the same ones you have there and the way the clear coat is coming off, it causes air to escape slowly. When it's cool out, it seems worse. I ended up replacing the wheels with ones from a later model 4Runner. Same size. I have heard of other problems such as a very stiff gas door. The hinge gets so rusted that the door will break off. Yours looks like it may be almost there. Mine hasn't gotten there yet and I make sure it stays lubed. When I bought mine, it too had a draw bar in the receiver hitch. It too was rusted in place. It took about 2 weeks of spraying it with PB blast and beating it back and forth for it to finally come out. Now I don't leave it in and it comes in and out very easy for when I need to tow my camper. The one you have here has a new frame which is a plus. I'm not sure about the rust you have on the rockers. I have never seen that happen on any other Tacoma. I live north of Boston, so I see much of the same rust problems you do. I think with a little brake work, alternator and battery and some other minor repairs, you really got your moneys worth for this truck. The mileage really isn't too much an issue. With a little work, you can really make some money on this truck. Best of luck with this truck.

I've replaced the shift cables in my 5 speed Toyota Echo twice now on the bottom of that shift lever there's probably a plastic bushing/pivot, and a cup on the cable. He says it looks like something should be holding it; there's usually a U shaped clip that clips around the whole end on the cable, when you pop it into the plastic on the shifter; it should click and lock via the U shaped clip. I love my Toyota, but the feel and function of all the shift cables they use is garbage; longevity too. They want about $900 for new replacements; I get em' $20 a set from the scrapyard. Truck's a steal either way.

As a Tacoma owner in PA, the shots of the undercarriage fill me with dread.

So glad I don't live anywhere near that rusty environment. Damn! Even the drive shaft looks perforated.

Looking at the cars in this area is why I'm glad they refuse to use salt on the roads in Oregon. I had a Toyota pickup that was 20 years old and it never had any where close to the rust I've seen on cars that are only a couple years old in this state.

Isn't it great how when your friend says something that's not true you immediately know he's confused or lying!!! Good to know habits or voice inflections.

Mustie, My buddy got one just like that. Took into Toyota and they replaced the whole frame. Due to the recall. It's like brand new now with 200.000 + miles. God bless

great revival! i myself just recently bought a 2001 Chevy 2500HD, with the monster 8.1L gas. trying to revive it for a work/plow truck. it has plenty of rust, and even came with a genuine NH inspection sticker (from a while ago), and even the original window sticker. runs great, but has some body issues, much like myself ;-)

All Chevy, GMC rot in the cab corners and rocker panels and tailgate so don't be too worried about it. Also inspect your cross member underneath bed that connects frame rails those usually need to be replaced if it hasn't already.
