Haycock Mountain - PA State Game Lands #157
Hiked Monday June 19th, 2023
What do you do when you've been staring at a mountain for 35 years from your front porch?? You hike it!
So, this was a lot of fun, but you’ll need patience because any semblance of blazing is pretty nonexistent. The Top Rock trail starts out simple enough but as you get into the boulders near the summit you have to rely on Alltrails to keep you on trail. There are occasional blaze cards nailed to trees and someone tied white ribbons to trees every so often but finding them is difficult. Just use Alltrails routing and have fun climbing the boulders. Eventually you will find yourself at the summit. There are a couple of Geo markers there. We decided to continue past the summit and use the Caves trail to loop back. Wow, this trail has absolutely no blazing and is so overgrown. We immediately got off trail even using Alltrails and decided to turn around and head back to Top Rock. Luckily, we noticed another white ribbon tied to a tree and decided to follow it. Soon enough we spotted rock cairns and were able to find the Caves Trail. There were more cairns showing the way but we still got off trail several times trying to find the next cairn. All the while gingerly stepping over all the poison ivy! Finally looped back to the Top Rock Trail and back to the parking lot. It’s a lot of fun with all the scrambling but pack your patience!
