Seagull - Knife - Ottertrack - Saganaga: A 6-day 61-mile route through the Boundary Waters in early August of 2021. We visit the homesteads of legendary characters Benny Ambrose and Dorothy Molter. This Journey starts in Seagull Lake and loops up into Knife Lake, Ottertrack Lake, Saganaga Lake, and return to Seagull. The was a fire ban while we were there due to forest fires all around which made the sky incredibly hazy.
BENNY AMBROSE AND DOROTHY MOLTER
In this video we visited the homestead sites of both Dorothy and Benny. I give a little bit of background information but there is so much more to both of their stories than I was able to fit into the video. I would highly recommend doing some research into both individuals if you would like to know more about them and their homesteads. Below are some links with information to both.

ROUTE
This a relatively easy route. It has a total of about 16 lakes and 16 portages. The portages are very short with the longest one only 100 rods or so. This route involves a lot more time on the water paddling as there are very few portages once you hit the South Arm of Knife Lake all the way up to Saganaga Lake and down Red Rock Pay. Excellent route if you are looking to paddle and portage very little.
Start - Entry point 54 on Seagull lake. Paddle southwest into Alpine Lake and then down to Jasper. Travel west into Kingfisher Lake and then into Ogishkemuncie Lake. Continue to the end of the lake and take the series of small lakes and portages through Annie Lake, Jenny Lake, and Eddy Lake. Be sure to check out Eddy falls along the portage between Eddy Lake and the South Arm. This will put you into the South Arm of Knife Lake. Travel west down the South Arm of Knife Lake into Knife lake. Continue to follow Knife Lake West to the Isle of Pine. From here our route backtracked northeast up knife lake to the very end where you will take a short portage into Ottertrack Lake. Keep following the lake northeast to the very end where you will find a wide open landing to the Monument Portage. Take the Monument Portage into Swamp Lake. Continue along Swamp Lake and keep Canada on your left side to the far northeast end. You should be able to paddle right into Saganaga Lake without having to portage. Stay near the southern shoreline and follow this into Red Rock Bay.
Pay attention as you move south through Red Rock Bay as there are a lot of islands and channels which turn into dead ends. There is only one portage on Red Rock Bay at the very south end. Take this portage into Red Rock Lake. Go to the south end of the Lake and portage into Alpine Lake. Take the 101 rod portage on the east side of Alpine Lake into Seagull Lake. Do not take the shorter portage at the end of the channel to the north of the 101 rod portage. The portage only takes you about 1/3 of the way down a narrow stream but in early August this stream was not navigable at all. It was very shallow and we had to wade and drag our canoe the whole way often getting stuck. It probably took us longer time to do this "shorter" path than it would of to have taken the 101 rod portage. Once you reach Seagull Lake, navigate your way northeast back to entry point 54 to end the route.
