Come with us for our first Boundary Waters Ice Fishing Trip of 2022! We head out onto some questionable first ice for our first winter camping trip of the season. We end up on Basswood Lake in search of walleyes and pike, but end up catching a few bonus whitefish and yellow perch before getting into some nighttime walleyes.
Days 2 is a completely different experience. The (relative) calm after the storm brings high barometric pressure, high winds and bluebird skies. We end up spending over half the day fishing, but come home empty-handed, having only released a few small fish that day.
Day 3 is a camp and travel day, where we allow ourselves to sleep in and enjoy the comfort of the insulated Eskimo hub shelter. Just before mid day, we begin our hike home.
Conditions are great for travel and we spend a comfortable hour of hiking to get ourselves off Basswood Lake and back to the river. River travel proved to be a dream compared to our hike in. We flew across the recently thickened ice and packed trail.
On our way back we encountered an abandoned cabin fully inside the Boundary Waters - submit a comment if you know anything about this property.
