The real problem is the economic divide... politicians hate public transportation because it's extremely expensive to maintain, it's dirty, and it's disgusting. And they don't give a crap because they travel by private cars driven by a chauffeur. The rich lobby for tax breaks which further takes away budget from the subway system despite it transporting their workers. And again, those corporate CEOs don't care because they don't take the subway. And finally since so many of us poor do take the subway, the MTA gets a shit ton of money which is spent on.... bail outs of ski resorts when they're not doing to well or to fund other construction projects not related to the subway. Because why re-invest that money back into the system to improve like a true capitalist company would do? This can be seen outside of NYC to a more macro stage across the country. Compare our poor excuse of a railway system -- amtrak -- to Europe. A modern, cheap masterpiece that will take you to any great European country you'd want to go to on any day. Or China and Japan where reaching 200mph is normal while for us, we pay extra to travel 60mph in a subpar tin can. It's not that we can't be as good as China or Europe, it's that we don't care enough and the people who can make a difference fight for themselves. And again, the rich take private jets so of course they don't care.

As a New Yorker he would not have stood for negative sentiments about Chinese cuisine, for instance. Miss you Tony

I couldn’t agree more with him. The first time I went to Shanghai was in 2004. My buddy and I went to the viewing deck and bar towards the top of the Jin Mao Tower. Back then, it was the second or third tallest building in the world. I found myself back again in 2014 and Jin Mao Tower was the third tallest in the city. That alone completely blew my mind. It indeed makes our American cities feel old and perhaps behind the times.

Again, most people don't hate Chinese people, but their government and the way they impose some really questionable authority on their own people and on international relationship makes it hard not to hate em.

SOME Americans are scared that way. The ones who are, usually are religious. The American variant of Christianity is kind of twisted and sick, and it's interwoven into people's definitions of themselves and their nations. Often, it's woven into politics in a way that is entirely contrary to how our political system is supposed to be set up in the first place! So you see, suggestions that America is in any way lacking is inherently a suggestion that their god or their religion is wrong. This is and always has been the danger of theocratic forms of governance. Every single nation in history that has gone down a theocratic road has ended up in this rut, bar none. Again, this is not the way every American thinks, but a very sizeable, politically powerful segment of the populous absolutely does see themselves and their country as ordained by God, and thus, the best at everything they set their hands to. And this concept of American Exceptionalism has even exported itself to some people who are not inherently religious in any extremist way, like a fire casting its heat onto anything sitting too near it. We cannot fix the body unless we are willing to cut out the cancer. And we cannot cut out the cancer unless we are willing to identify it, and call it by name: Christianity.

I have no problem with emerging market countries like China, Poland etc. growing and getting richer. As much as it may be true, that Shanghai makes NY look 3rd world... you have to understand that there are Chinese who have never been to their own country's capital city, and those that live in rural China, their only dream is to live anywhere in Shanghai, where there is actual non-slave labor work. There is no slave labor work in America for the most part, a minimum wage, but far from Chinese poverty. America is still the more stable country, where things are more normal. You don't see Americans fleeing any state, as if Moses just parted the Red Sea, in search of a better life. You don't see impoverished Americans going from a southern state to NY like their life depended on it. Yes, Shanghai has accumulated huge wealth, which is poured into buildings and infrastructure, but China is not a truly democratic nation, where everything is milk and honey. We're taking about a communist-capitalist system here. Wake up.

Everyday, I get more and more fascinated with China. It's progress and such, they're climbing to the top of the world really really fast, perhaps they're already there. But it's scary, the price for that "success." Social credit system, I can't get my head around that, surveillance, censorship... My dad used to work in China for almost 20 years, and he constantly talks about how advanced, how convenient is just about everything in there, the infrastructure, the commute... Thankfully, he managed to go home right before that covid crap. I guess if you're chinese middle class, or up, you don't care about these things if you just live your life.

I visited Shanghai once. I definitely could see the amazing economic growth. Still, as a tourist I had a so-so time. Other Asian metropolises left me much more impressed. Btw, I'm only talking about traveling. This isn't to speak about the city's economy or how it'd be to live there regularly.

Shanghai, despite its cluster of skyscrapers, is NOT impressive vis a vis New York. It doesn't have the variegated neighborhoods and art collections of NY & "technological sophistication" means the eyes of Beijing are watching you: you must register your passport to get a sim card and have a local bank account to rent a bicycle. Foreigners can't buy train tickets to Mongolia @ Beijing's Train station; you must go to a special desk @ a special hotel to buy the ticket. The MagLev line does NOT run from the airport to the city center (you need to transfer to a subway line). Of course, you cannot use Facebook or Google or KZitem - they are all banned in China. In Asia, go to Hong Kong or Singapore or Seoul or Bangkok or any of the Japanese cities if you want to be impressed.

When was this visit to Shanghai? I spent a month in a quite nice part of Shanghai, doing research right before the Olympics: 2007. It was not that developed. Or should I say, the development was very uneven. The nicest area was the fakest area--Pudong--which is just a totally made-up region that most people find lifeless. Where I lived--an area that truly was a desirable area--there were high rise complexes and big malls but also a street culture that was grubby and underdeveloped. Also, the malls were sad and not cosmopolitan.

China has no personal freedom. That's the biggest problem. You will go to prison for even criticizing the government. Everything is highly censored.

Western Europe is fucked too, I know. In the UK people are arrested for offensive Facebook and Twitter posts under their insane hate speech laws, and people like Tommy Robinson are thrown in prison for reporting the truth on the Islamic rape gangs. The USA is truly one of the last bastions of freedom of speech in the west thanks to our First Amendment.
