I love the visual you get on the fur bass drum of it resonating. You can see the fur move. Cool!

I didn’t notice that until I edited this footage, and I also enjoy it. Adds to the organic nature of it all.

Cool fact about the origins of "Weather King." I always just thought it was because weathered was another word for worn out and these heads took longer to do that than previous iterations. Hadn't considered the effect the actual weather had on them.

i bought a snare a few years with a bovid head on it, forget which on exactly it is but it sounds great imo and i like the feel of it.

Yeah, I think for me, really the feel of the head was the most enjoyable difference. The texture with brushes was really natural.

Hi. A question on the bass drum...did you have a goat hide membrane at the kick side? I want to try out making membranes for an old drum set using my tanning skills and goat hides are all the more plenty where I am. I think it is an awesome approach as the traditional drums this end in Africa have an awesome dynamic feel.

I have not tried a hide head on the batter side. In my jazz playing it would be fine, but I’d worry about durability almost anywhere else.

I surely agree, it's not an everyday tool for me, but it's something I'm glad I have for the specific drums/situations I use them for.

Ha, I won’t be taking these heads out to any of my PETA corporate gigs, but I do believe Bovid is doing things in an ethical/humane way as well. Not the way “Big Drumhead” was sourcing materials back in the day I’m sure.

I’d rather see animals that are raised for food being fully utilized, rather than line DuPont’s pockets and create more plastic waste 🤷🏻♂️

@@Unicorns8myPoo exactly, I believe it can be done responsively, and a one man shop creating hide heads is not out here slaughtering healthy animals for raw materials.

Mike, the first thing I thought when you explained what this video as going to show was ho much time and effort you put into putting this out here for us. Thank you so much for that. My first set as a pieced together conglomeration of a marching bass drum. A tom that clamped to that bass and a snare. This was back in 1964. The reason I even bring this up is the snare had a hide head on it. The guy that sold it to me emphasized the fact that humidity would constantantly be changing the tuning. Thank you again for all the work you put into this production.
