Bow waves are the byproduct of a moving ship in the water. This slows the boat down which means more fuel needs to be spent to move the vessel. The same thing happens in swimming where moving on top of the water generates a bow wave which effectively reduces swimming speed in comparison to underwater swimming. In this video we talk more about what bow waves are and how we can minimise them in swimming our strokes.
