For someone who doesn't do a lot of KZitem videos this was better than most out there. Thanks for posting this fix. Going to call Bowflex and see if they will send some washers. If not, off to Home Depot to grab some.

Thanks for this great video. I purchased these washers : sourcing map Nylon Flat Washers M16 28mm OD 16mm ID 1mm Thickness Sealing Gasket for Faucet Pipe Water Hose, Clear, Pack of 50 for £4.99 from Amazon. I had to cut a small flange out of the inside to increase the diameter of the hole but this was straight forward with a stanley knife. I've now fitted the four washers and the clunking noise is no longer!!!! Thank you so much for your first you tube video. Very much appreciated.

Charles, thanks for the nylon washers post. Between you and Derek, I'll finally quiet my Max Trainer. We shouldn't have to do this for the price we paid for these machines. As Derek mentioned, Shame on Bowflex.

Thank you for posting this video! We just bought a used (but practically new) Bowflex Max Trainer from someone, and I quickly discovered why they wanted rid of it--the knocking! I was able to fix it with your help using a couple of random nylon washers I had on hand. :-)

This was my problem as well, and your fix has solved the knocking problem for me. Thank you! I used some soft plastic that I had sitting around to cut the washers.

Good video, but, FYI, Bowflex already has an "official" fix for this exact issue. The real fix is to add 1 "wave washer" (aka a "compression" washer) to the inboard side (where you added the larger washer) to each "spindle" (crank post). Bowflex has actually included the wave washers as a standard item in their more recent Max Trainer shipments. Bowflex will ship you the wave washers for FREE if you are the original owner and your machine is still under the parts warranty (or sell them to you if your machine is out of the warranty period). The Bowflex "wave washer" kit is Bowflex part # 8018502. The required wave washer size is 17.2 x 22.0 x 0.3mm. This issue is a perfect example of the purpose of a wave washer which is "to bear a load as they are deflected in a linear range". Bowflex intentionally designed in that side-to-side "slop/play" that you observed to prevent potential "binding" issues that can occur due to manufacturing tolerance stack-up on some machines. The drawback to this intentional "play" is that some machines will exhibit that "clunk/knock" that you have illustrated. Thus, they fixed it by adding the wave washers.

I sent bowflex a message asking for the kit and they completely ignored it. Will have to find a supplier in the UK which seems easier said than done.

Thank you so much for the idea!!! That click has been driving me crazy. I was able to find a nylon washer identical to the size of the metal one and that is where my click was happening (only when it hit the outside washer) the size is .343 x .885 .062 flat nylon washers I found it in a bin at Lowe’s !

Weird. I have a Max 3 from May 2022. It gets used about 3-4 hours a week. I just checked my spindle arm and it doesn't move at all. But yours is the second video I've seen about putting washers in this place to hold the spindle from moving. I feel there's a slight "bump" as I use mine (so that's why I'm looking at maintenance videos like yours).

Just an update. I got the washers from Bowflex and I follow the instructions- I installed them and added a touch of wd-40 and I can say that the machine is ok now. Just the normal sound it makes as the flywheel rotates (let's face it-these machines are NOT silent!) but I can live with it and exercise while watching TV! It's Winter right now here in Canada and really cold! So..doing these machine 30 minutes plus some free weights is good. Thanks!

hi there...thanks for the video...I bought a M5 used and it is fine but it makes a bit of the click/knocking noise. Nothing serious yet. Is there a video that shows the official bowflex fix and how to install the wave washers? I guess I will buy them from bowflex...but otherwise i'm using the m5 and loving it. Thanks for posting!

Hi Erick. If your clicking sound is like mine they said it's the servo motor. I've ordered one from Bowflex for under $20 I think, but due to China/Corona, it could be a couple months before it gets here. I'm ok with that except it does seem we need to have other manufacturing sources for some of these parts. I've searched online and they are not available.I also have the knocking which is probably fixed with the washers, but that's for another day. Good luck!

Don’t think they need to be nylon, metal washers as spacers will work just fine, all your doing is taking up the slack, even spring washers would work, I think the nylon ones will wear very quickly. Good first effort for video though 👍
