There are many good and interesting things about a Kris video, but one of the things that I really like is that Kris will use traditional methods where they work well, but he is not afraid to use modern methods of construction where they have an advantage. Hence we get to see fantastic traditional oak framing, then next time, CNC plasma cutting. Keep up the excellent work Kris.😀🇬🇧

Impressive! Finished dough bowl has a strong connection to the original slab of wood. It feels earthy and strong. It was interesting to see all the hand tools used for chipping, scraping, and shaving the wood. Also your large wood slab which holds piece in place. I would love to see a video on your tools, what they are for, and the manual wood stand/ grip/ seat you use. Thanks!

Since Kris hasn't answered, I'll run through it. You can google the individual things. First he planes it with his No 4 hand plane. Then he sits on his bowl horse, which is mainly for carving bowls and is a specialized version of a shaving horse, and uses his draw knife (the one with a handle at both ends). The layout with a string is a traditional way of laying out ellipses. He then proceeds to hollowing out the bowl with his hand adze while the wood is held by his two holdfasts. He uses a hatchet on his chopping block to take off as much waste as possible. Then he uses a big gouge to hollow out the bowl some more. He then refines the shape with his draw knife on the bowl horse. After drying he's sanding it, and, as he explains, he's sanding because the wood was tearing. Otherwise using scrapers or similar leaves a better surface than sanding. He then finishes it with boiled linseed oil using his bare hands, which you should never do because it contains drying agents that are toxic until it has cured. When it has cured, it's food safe. Natural boiled linseed oil doesn't have drying agents, but I doubt that was natural. And I have done it many times myself, so I'm not any better myself 😅 The bowl is a lovely version of a traditional design.

Kris, I'm a big fan of your work and I aspire to be as good as you someday. I have the tools to make some bowls and spoons, but I need to get ahold of some wood. I don't own a chain saw, but during the warmer months of the year, people post free wood all the time especially if it's from storm damage. I have an old pick up that I plan to put a cheap Harbor Freight crane in the back by the tailgate. This way when I want to get some of that free wood, I can get it myself. It's a hand crank crane but I plan to modify it by adding a battery-run winch. This will make it totally independent for me. I hate relying on others and it's always at their leisure. I've heard you need to carve from greenwood. Is that true? I can't image carvers getting green wood ever time they want to carve a bowl or spoon. You're talented Kris, and if you choose a different path of work in life, you can always earn money making these on the side. Any tips you may have would be welcomed.

Doesn't boiled linseed oil have toxic driers in it?
@Whiskey_Ram
6 жыл бұрын
Boiled linseed oil should be used for decorative purposes only. If using a wooden utensil or bowl for food, I would recommend using walnut oil or flax seed oil (which is where linseed oil comes from and then mixed with chems to make "boiled linseed oil"). Both can get expensive. But because of the natural fats in walnut oil, it tends to spoil faster. So bowls and utensils treated with walnut oil should be used, cleaned and have it reapplied on a more regular basis than something treated with flax seed oil.
@LB-vl3qn

For wooden tools used for cooking and eating use a 1:1 blend of beeswax and food grade mineral oil. Blends are sold ready made if you don't want to make your own. Other oils go rancid and can ruin a piece of wood over time.
